No Winter Olympics for you! The IOC (International Olympic Committee) has banned Russia from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. Russian athletes that weren’t part of the state sponsored doping program from the Sochi games, are able to compete once approved but under a neutral flag. There will be no sign of Russia – flag, anthem, team – at the Olympics and the record books will forever show they won zero medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

 

Sideline stat

Sports Illustrated has named their prestigious "Sportsman of the Year.” This year the award went to two men who helped the city of Houston emerge from the heartbreak of Hurricane Harvey. JJ Watt of the Houston Texans (NFL – National Football League) helped raise over $37 million for hurricane relief efforts. The other awardee, Jose Altuve - second baseman for the Houston Astros (MLB – Major League Baseball), led his team of ultimate underdogs to their first World Series title.

Celebrating athletes who use their platform to bring about social change, the Sports Illustrated’s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award was presented last night. Beyoncé made a surprise appearance to award former NFL player Colin Kaepernick with the award, recognizing his efforts to further social justice.
