Dreaming Of A Polite Christmas?
We all have this idyllic vision of our family holiday with chestnuts roasting on an open fire while drinking eggnog and laughing in our Christmas sweaters. Now let’s be real, that only happens in the movies. Inevitably someone says something offensive about politics, insults the meal or gives a present that’s wholly inappropriate. When things take an awkward turn, here are a few ways to redirect the conversation to safer ground.
When your Grandpa talks politics, sending your family into a tizzy
Who needs political correctness? Be a trendsetter. That’s what the Los Angeles Lakers did when they retired former player Kobe Bryant’s numbers (#8, #24) this week. He is the first NBA (National Basketball Association) player to have two numbers retired by one team. Why two? He played his whole career with the Lakers but changed his number halfway through and was equally as good when wearing both numbers. The difference? Early career #8 Bryant had more hair.
Your cousin had a new baby Girl, and gave her a really weird name
We’re in the thick of college football bowl game season – 40 games in a span of a few weeks - all leading up to the national championship in January. Just as you’ll never forget your newest second cousin’s awkward name, some of the most memorable bowl game names this season roll off the tongue like the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, Taxslayer Bowl and the Potato Bowl. And yes, there used to be a game called the Salad Bowl.
When you put on your big fake smile because you received yet another pair of underwear
How great would it be to get a gift you actually like? A non-profit received a monumental gift from Texas Rangers (MLB – Major League Baseball) pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife Heidi. They donated their $9.75 million mansion to Camp Barnabas, an organization that helps individuals with special needs and chronic illnesses. They tried to sell the 32,000-square foot abode sitting on 100 acres in Branson, Missouri, but then decided to give it to charity. That’s quite the stocking stuffer.

If the discussion sways to tax reform, take a turn with football
The Carolina Panthers (NFL – National Football League) will be for sale at the end of the football season. The estimated price tag? $2.3 billion. The current ownership group bought the team for $206 million back in 1993. Imagine paying the taxes on that sale? Potential buyers include a group spearheaded by P. Diddy (aka Brother Love) that includes Golden State Warriors Steph Curry (NBA) and the hotly debated former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
