The Rundown: Move It Monday

It may be Monday but it’s the first Monday after Memorial Day which means…you can finally wear white.

Just avoid the tomato sauce,

The Last Night’s Game

MLB (Major League Baseball)

  • Oh what a night. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s Albert Pujols became the ninth player in MLB history to eclipse 600 home runs in his career. Oh, and that 600th home run was actually a grand slam. Even better? The Angels’ fan who caught the 600th home run ball could’ve sold it for a lot of money, but he very kindly gave it back to Pujols.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

Soccer

  • Ole! Real Madrid (Spain) won its second consecutive Champions League (think Super Bowl for European Club soccer teams). Cristiano Ronaldo not only mesmerized Juventus (an Italian team) with his great hair but his ball skills, scoring two goals to lead his team to the coveted title.

Sideline stat

  • Just when you felt accomplished about penciling in one workout this weekend, we bring you 94-year-old Harriette Thompson. Thompson became the oldest woman to complete a half marathon yesterday. At 92 she broke the record as the oldest woman to complete a marathon.

Coaches’ Corner

  • There were a record setting seven grand slams hit across in MLB games on Saturday night. (A grand slam is when a player hits a home run with the bases loaded). There’s a chance Papa John’s may be rethinking its #papaslam promo that gives fans 40% off pizzas the next day. Pepperoni overload.

The Rundown: Short and Sweet

May your Monday start off how you like your coffee, strong and balanced.

With a side of sugar,

The Last Night’s Game Team

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • Back it up. Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors are up 3-0 in their playoff series vs. Portland Trail Blazers. Although the playoffs may have already swept Warriors' head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr was unable to coach game three and will not coach game four (and may be out for the entire playoffs) due to chronic back pain which caused him to miss half of last season.
  • Sweep you off your feet. The Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Indiana Pacers to become the first team to advance to second round of the playoffs. This marks LeBron James’ record-breaking 10th sweep in a playoff series. Curious what’s happening in the playoffs? We have you covered.

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Rain delay. Just when you tried to impress your racing fan boss and watch yesterday’s NASCAR race from Bristol, it never happened. The race was postponed until today due to weather. You can catch it at 1 pm EST here.

Overtime

  • In the epic playoff battle between his team, the Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA), and the Houston Rockets, MVP candidate Russell Westbrook hasn’t let his reputation of fashion guru suffer. After yesterday’s loss, he continued to bring his A game at the postgame press conference. We’ll let you determine if his avant-garde outfit is on point or should be pointed toward the exit.

Coaches’ corner

  • The Chicago Cubs won the World Series (MLB – Major League Baseball) last year and broke their championship curse. That win comes with a lot of new fans. Their rival, Cincinnati Reds, took advantage of that situation with the “Bandwagon Fan Cam,” displaying Cubs fans throughout the stadium. Bandwagon fans are fans who start to like a team only when they win. Convenient.

The Rundown: Finally Friday

We have that Friday feeling. It’s like finding a $20 in a pocket of your old jeans.

Glorious,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PGA (Professional Golfers Association)

  • Don’t call it a comeback. There were high hopes that in his return Tiger Woods would be competitive this year but the glass is looking half empty. He pulled out of his last golf tournament due to back spasms and cancelled a press conference for this weekend’s tournament for the same reason. We’re not doctors but if you can’t sit in a chair and talk to the press, that’s probably a sign that retirement could be around the corner.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • Cha-ching. The NBA All-Star Game is this weekend which prompted Forbes to release their list of the highest paid NBA players (salaries + endorsements). Looks like we need to ask for a raise.
    • LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers - $86 M
    • Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors - $62.5 M
    • Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors, $47.1 M
  • Third wheel? Western conference head coach Steve Kerr has four of his Golden State Warriors on the all-star team and plans to play them together. Will Russell Westbrook of the OKC Thunder be the odd man out on the court? Westbrook has strained relationship with Warriors’ Kevin Durant after Durant left the Thunder. Nothing like having to be civil with your ex’s hot new arm candy.
  • What does Taco Bell have to do with being able to dribble a basketball? Find out in our five things to know about the NBA All-Star Game.

Overtime

  • Ice Cube famously said, “today was a good day” and that was yesterday for Canadian tennis player Genie Bouchard.  First she made good on a Super Bowl bet with a Twitter follower. She lost the bet and had to go on a date with him. Surprise surprise, there will be a second date. After that she revealed her spread in this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Sideline stat

  • In addition to the list of highest paid players, Forbes also released its annual valuations list of NBA franchises. Despite their recent losing seasons, the New York Knicks are #1 on the list, valued at $3.3 billion. The team at the bottom of the list? The New Orleans Pelicans, worth a mere $750 million.

Coaches’ Corner

  • Sending you off into Friday with a story of a good deed. Last Friday the founder of Little Caesar’s Pizza and owner of the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) and Detroit Tigers (baseball), Mike Ilitch passed away. He was known in the Detroit community for his generosity. In his death, a 1994 story surfaced of how he paid the rent for Rosa Parks after she was robbed.
