NFL (National Football League)

  • Bling ring. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft knew his quarterback, Tom Brady, and his family had been through a lot during the team’s championship run last season. His mom, Galynn, was undergoing chemotherapy and for the first time ever, she missed all but one of Brady’s games. In honor of the sacrifice and challenges she faced, Kraft gave her a Super Bowl ring. Mama Brady’s cancer is now in remission.
  • Enshrined. Saturday night the Pro Football Hall of Fame gained seven new members. One of the inductees, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, proved that everything is bigger in Texas. He threw himself one heck of a party, costing a reported $16 million, that boasted a special performance by Justin Timberlake.
  • Determined. In case you missed it, the night featured memorable speeches from the inductees. The always well-spoken San Diego Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson, made sure his final words were unforgettable by sharing a moving story about his last name and its origin. If you need some Monday motivation, here are the highlights from each inductee’s speech.

  • Injured New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard (MLB - Major League Baseball) can now add actor to his resume. Living up to his nickname Thor, it was fitting that he made a cameo in last night’s Game of Thrones as a spear throwing warrior in a battle. Luckily his cameo was well received by fans, unlike Ed Sheeran’s appearance.

Sideline stat

  • Usain Bolt is the most decorated sprinter of this generation. Saturday in the world championships, he raced in his final solo race and it didn’t go as planned. He finished third in his first-ever loss in the Olympics or a world championship semifinal, a 45-race winning streak.

Coaches’ corner

  • Longtime Chicago Bears quarterback (NFL) Jay Cutler, retired after last season and accepted a job as a commentator with FOX for the upcoming football season. Apparently, retirement wasn’t for him. This weekend he signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins to replace their injured quarterback. (In case you’re wondering, Cutler is married to fashion designer and reality TV star Kristin Cavallari).

World Baseball Classic

  • Quest for glory. Team U.S.A. begins their quest for baseball world domination in Miami today against Columbia. Would you like to know more about World Baseball Classic? Round the bases of knowledge with our five things to know. (Click here for the full schedule).

NCAA Basketball (College)

  • Plug the leak. Last year the March Madness bracket was leaked online before the exclusive selection show could reveal all of the matchups. Extra precautions are being taken this year for members of the selection committee. They’ll follow strict guidelines like a trial jury such as having all meals delivered by room service and security stationed on the committee members’ floor to ward off uninvited guests.
  • Aborted takeoff. On Wednesday, the Michigan Wolverines’ plane slid off the runway on their way to the Big 10 basketball tournament. The team made it to the game but their uniforms did not. The team was forced to play in their practice jerseys because their game uniforms were stuck on the plane and are now considered evidence in the crash.

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Going all in. Heading into the big weekend in Las Vegas, NASCAR announced they will be adding one additional race to the Vegas track in 2018. The Vegas events will take place in March and September.

Overtime

  • The Iditarod is one of the most grueling races in the world. The dog sled race is nearly 1,000 miles in the Alaskan wilderness. Yesterday one team of dogs showed up to the stage’s finish line without their musher, who fell asleep and fell off the sled. Good dogs.

Sideline stat

  • National League MVP Kris Bryant, who plays for the Chicago Cubs, set a record with his new contract but it’s not nearly as much as you think. He signed a 1-year/$1.05 million deal, which makes him the highest-paid player in a second year of service time in MLB (Major League Baseball) history.

Five things to know about the 2016 NFL season

  1. The season is longer than Taylor Swift’s last relationship - it starts in September and ends with the Super Bowl, which is typically the first Sunday in February. Over 17.6 million fans saw a game in person last season.   
  2. This year, four regular season NFL games will be played outside of the U.S. with three games in Europe and and one in Mexico City. There’s an agreement in place to play a game in China in 2018.  
  3. NFL does not have fully guaranteed contracts like the NBA and MLB where a player’s contracts states they will receive the full amount no matter what. Football players play one of the most demanding sports but they can face a career ending injury and not be paid out the contract balance. Although some players have been able to negotiate in a cushion. For example, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck signed a six-year, $120 million deal; of that $87 million guaranteed. 
  4. The NFL was a tax exempt organization from 1942-2015 despite the fact that television rights fees, licensing agreements, sponsorships, ticket sales and other revenue earned by the 32 teams were all taxed. Dropping this status means that the NFL will no longer have to disclose important financial information such as Commissioner Roger Goodell’s $44 million salary. 
  5. According to Vegas Insider, these teams are the favorites to win Super Bowl 51 :

  • Here we go! The NFL season will kick off tomorrow night with a rematch of Super Bowl 50. The Carolina Panthers will take on Denver Broncos in Denver. Tune in to see if Cam Newton will be giving away footballs to kids or if Super Bowl MVP Von Miller will be dancing his way to victory.  
  • Slap in the face. Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has been an analyst for FOX NFL since 2001. Despite his tenure, FOX signed Aikman’s nemesis Skip Bayless for his own show this fall. Aikman and Bayless have a history of bad blood stemming from the time Bayless claimed in his book that Aikman was gay - without any proof. "To say I’m disappointed in the hiring of Skip Bayless would be an enormous understatement,” Aikman said. 
  • Quick recovery. Houston Texans standout defensive player JJ Watt has been cleared to play in week one after undergoing back surgery in July.

  • UFC’s Miesha Tate flexed her muscles for good over the weekend. She was hiking Nevada’s Mt. Charleston when she came across a little girl, Kai, who had broken her arm while hiking with her mom. Mom was struggling to get Kai down the mountain so Tate picked her up and carried her down the rest of the two-mile trail. Afterward, there was no shortage of mutual love going on between the two on social media.
