The Rundown: Monday Motivation

It’s Monday again but hang in there. It’s almost a three-day weekend!

You can do it,

The Last Night’s Game team

PS - Need a little extra motivation this morning? Leave it to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to kick-start your day

Horse Racing

  • It’s in the cloud. The quest for the Triple Crown came to an end on Saturday. Cloud Computing, who was fresh after not racing in the Kentucky Derby, won The Preakness. Derby winner, Always Dreaming, came in eighth in a field of 10.
  • Hold my beer. The other race at The Preakness isn’t on the track; it’s the famed port-a-potty races. Yes, racing atop port-a-potties while onlookers try to knock you off by throwing beer cans. What could go wrong?

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • Unstoppable. The Golden State Warriors make things look easy. Saturday, they beat the overpowered San Antonio Spurs to take a 3-0 series lead in the playoffs. The Warriors remain undefeated in the playoffs.
  • Detained. Oklahoma City Thunder’s Enes Kanter, a Turkish citizen, was traveling abroad on behalf of his charity. Kanter has long been an outspoken critic of the Turkish president and upon arriving in Romania, he was detained because his passport had been cancelled by the Turkish government. The NBA called the U.S. State Department for help and he was later released.

Overtime

  • The Dancing With The Stars season 24 finale begins tonight and it features two athletes. Former Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross (MLB – Major League Baseball) and NFL (National Football League) running back Rashad Jennings will battle it out with pop star Normani Kordei for the mirrorball trophy.

Coaches’ corner

  • Former NFL player Myron Rolle has accomplished more than most by age 30. He's not only a Rhodes Scholar who played professional football but a medical school graduate who will start his neurosurgeon residency at Harvard next month. Guess you’d say he’s accomplished.

The Rundown: Out Into The Real World

What do Oprah, Will Ferrell and President Trump have in common? They all spoke at college graduations this weekend. Even though they inspire our grads, they still need conversation starters just like you and me.

That’s why we’re serving up a side of sports,

The Last Night’s Game Team

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Great balls of fire. NASCAR raced on Saturday night this week and Aric Almirola lit up the night sky. He was involved in a fiery crash with Danica Patrick and Joey Logano. After watching the video you’ll see how incredible it is that he only walked away with fractured vertebra.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • We’re getting there. In game one of the Western Conference finals, the Golden State Warriors overcame a huge deficit to pull off a win against the San Antonio Spurs. (This is the semifinal round – the finals start on June 1st).

UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)

  • Overachiever. The fighter known as the “blue collar champion,” Stipe Miocic, set a record for title defenses by a heavyweight on Saturday. As if that’s not impressive enough, the Cleveland native also a firefighter when he’s not in the octagon. (FYI heavyweight classification is for fighters between 205 and 265 pounds).

Overtime

  • MLB (Major League Baseball) teams proved that real men wear pink. All teams broke out the pink gear yesterday to celebrate Mother’s Day and raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The pink game used items are being auctioned off to benefit the cause, in case you forgot to buy mom a gift.

Coaches’ corner

  • The NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft lottery is tomorrow. Like your grandma on Tuesdays at 10 am, the NBA uses a bingo-like ping pong ball system to determine the order in which the 14 non-playoff teams will pick in the draft. The worse your team was last season, the higher the odds of receiving a top spot in the draft. Want more? Read on.

The Rundown: Bare Necessities

Friday, we’ve been waiting for you all week. Thanks for coming. We hope you brought coffee and wine.

Only the necessities,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – Share The Rundown with a friend. Not simply because we make you happy in the mornings, but because there are prizes involved.

NFL (National Football League)

  • Welcome to Cleveland. As expected, defensive end Myles Garrett from Texas A&M was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the first pick in the draft. Garrett held to his word and did not attend the draft ceremony. He celebrated at home with friends and family.
  • Brotherly love. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted T.J. Watt (younger brother of Houston Texans’ heartthrob J.J. Watt). They join a rare group of NFL players with on-field family ties. The most notable brothers of the gridiron? Eli and Peyton Manning.
  • A great night for guys named T.J. Make-A-Wish granted T.J. Onwuanibe's wish when he announced the Baltimore Ravens' draft pick last night. The 14-year-old, whose cancer is thankfully in remission, punctuated his big announcement with an excited fist pump. The video will make you smile.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • Friday night lights. The NBA playoffs are still rolling with the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors advancing to the second round of the playoffs. Tonight the Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz all have a chance to claim their spot in the next round tonight. Big night for shooting hoops.

Overtime

  • Mpho' “Gift” Ngoepe became the first ever African born player to play in the major leagues (MLB – Major League Baseball). Carrying the weight of his continent on his shoulders, the Pittsburgh Pirate had a hit at his first at bat.

Sideline stat

  • ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, had a rough week laying off 100 employees, including on air-talent. This is their second layoff in six months. Paying high prices for broadcast rights (we’re talking $1.4 B for their NBA TV deal) and a drop in cable subscriptions led to the layoffs. This is no longer the ESPN you grew up with. For an interesting article on their demise, click here.

Coaches’ corner

  • It’s tradition at the draft to boo the commissioner when he walks on stage at the draft. Philadelphia fans did such a good job, that at times you couldn’t hear commissioner Roger Goodell. The Commish is booed because most fans just don’t like him. He’s the party pooper – the guy who enforces the rules in football. Do not try this at home.
