College Football
It was a tale of two football games on Saturday in an effort to claim the two final spots in the College Football National Championship Game on Monday, January 13. LSU (Louisiana State) embarrassed Oklahoma, defeating them 63-28. The Clemson and Ohio State game came down to the wire with Clemson pulling off a win to head to the national championship game. The game on January 13 will essentially be a home game for LSU at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. GEAUX TEAM
Overtime
Papa John’s Pizza founder John Schnatter was a huge supporter of the University of Louisville, including the title sponsorship of their football arena, up until the university parted ways with him after his scandalous use of a racial slur and subsequent resignation as the company CEO. He showed up to the Bluegrass State rivalry basketball game between Kentucky and Louisville wearing Kentucky blue. Put one in the win column for Papa because Kentucky won in overtime. BURN
Sideline stat
The New England Patriots (NFL – National Football League) may have never heard the saying “don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.” For the first time in a decade, they don’t have a clear shot to the playoffs. In the last weekend of the NFL regular season, they lost to the Miami Dolphins, who only have four wins. Now they’ll have to play the Tennessee Titans in a wild card game to pave their path to winning another Super Bowl. NOT A SURE BET
Coaches’ corner
Today is known as Black Monday in the NFL because it’s the day coaches tend to get fired. Yesterday was the last day of the regular season so coaches who had a subpar team are likely to get the boot today. So far we know that the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants and Carolina Panthers are looking for a new coach but the Dallas Cowboys might be next team with a job opening. NOW HIRING
What to watch
This weekend brought us a match made in soccer heaven when soccer stars Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris married in Florida. The two met while playing on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in 2010 and now play on the Orlando Pride. Of course, their fellow teammates were in attendance including Alex Morgan and her baby bump. PARTY FOR TWO
