The Rundown: What's On Draft?

Sports – helping you create conversation since the Romans competed in the Olympics naked.

Glad we weren’t there on National Selfie Day,

The Last Night’s Game Team

NBA (National Basketball Association)

Curious who your team selected? Find out here.

NHL (National Hockey League)

  • What happens in Vegas ends up on Twitter. Ahead of today's NHL Draft in Chicago, the new kids on the block, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, revealed their 30-man roster and their new jerseys, which Twitter hated. For more coverage on the trade rumors and to find out who is the coveted first pick, click here.

College Baseball World Series

  • Narrowing it down. The pool of 64 teams has dwindled down to four in this double elimination tournament. Tonight the TCU Horned Frogs (Texas Christian University) will take on the Florida Gators and the Oregon State Beavers will play the LSU Tigers (Louisiana State University). The winners of those series will face each other in the finals.

Overtime

  • New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (NFL – National Football League) has been on a tour of Asia with his son and Under Armour. On the trip the boys learned a thing or two about blocking and man buns when they became sumo wrestlers for a day in Japan. The photos are classic.

  • In the first weekend of the America's Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand took a commanding lead over Team Oracle U.S.A. in Bermuda. Tomorrow, Team U.S.A. will begin the uphill battle to take home the win. If the situation sounds familiar it’s because in the 2013 finals, Team U.S.A. came from behind to beat Team New Zealand. The Rundown: So Major

We hope your weekend is as major as this weekend in sports, which brings us America’s Cup, U.S. Open and College World Series.

Action packed,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PGA (Professional Golfers' Association)

  • FORE! The U.S. Open, which is the second major tournament of the golf season, began yesterday at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.  The one to watch: Rickie Fowler. The current leader is looking to win his first major.
  • Haters gonna hate. Veteran golfer Phil Mickelson opted to skip the U.S. Open (only major tournament he’s never won) to attend his daughter’s high school graduation where she will deliver a speech as the class president. As expected, this move received cheers and jeers from sports enthusiasts.
  • Is that the Hindenburg? The real winner at Erin Hills is the pilot of an advertising blimp that was circling the course yesterday and crashed after it caught on fire. Thankfully, he escaped with minor injuries.

College Baseball World Series

  • Batter up. The 64-team tournament is down to the Elite Eight. On Saturday they will head to Omaha, the home of the College World Series, to determine which team will be the national champion. Is your uni squad in the mix? Find out.

Overtime

  • On Wednesday, a gunman shot multiple people during a Republican team practice for The Congressional Baseball Game for Charity. The game was last night and even before it started over $1 million was raised for the event’s designated charities. A Capitol Police officer who was also injured during the shooting, David Bailey, threw out the first pitch. In case you’re wondering, the Democrats won the game.

  • The sports world has been buzzing about the long-awaited boxing match between UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.

The big payday lured Mayweather out of retirement for the August 26th match where he hopes to be the first boxer to reach a 50-0 record. McGregor, whose background in mixed martial arts, looks to utilize his size and powerful punches to take down Mayweather. Insiders expect the fight to break pay-per-view records projecting over 5 million buys.

The Rundown: 5 Things To Know About America’s Cup

Raise your hand if you thought the America’s Cup was something you drank wine out of or maybe the trophy for a prized pig at the state fair? Well, the America’s Cup is actually a competitive high speed international sailing race that takes place every few years.

All aboard,

The Last Night's Game Team

Five Things To Know About America’s Cup

  1. America’s Cup started in 1851 in England (although Britain has never won) and is the world's oldest continuous sporting event. The teams are currently racing in Bermuda in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers & Challenger Playoffs with the winner taking on the previous champions, Oracle Team U.S.A., for the title starting next week.
  2. The team that wins the previous race chooses the location, format and the rules for the next race. (The 2013 race took place in San Francisco).
  3. The race is known as the “F1 on water” (Formula One racing). Why? The boats, which are propelled by the wind not engines, have massive engineering teams that use technology to push the limits of performance and aerodynamics, seeking top speeds (57 mph). The boats actually fly above the water which is called foiling. It raises out of the water onto hydrofoils to skim across the waves.
  4. It’s often referred to as the “Billionaire’s Death Race” because the cost of participating is so extravagant that only the wealthy can afford it. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is one of the main players. He spent $115 million for Oracle Team U.S.A. to successfully defend the 2013 title.
  5. The boat's crew of six train hard for this race utilizing logic puzzles, memory apps, boxing, free diving and even hostage training situations with Navy Seals. (Possibly preparing for pirates)?

Overtime

  • Racehorse Horsey McHorseface has won his first race in Australia. The name was inspired by the poll that chose Boaty McBoatface as the name for a research ship (the ship was never actually named that. Boo). The horse’s owner thought the name was funny and then said, “why not?”

  • The NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals will resume tonight with the Golden State Warriors up 2-0 in the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. (This was the same situation the teams were in last year and the Cavs came back to win it all).

Tomorrow night the NHL (National Hockey League) Finals will take place in Pittsburgh where the series is all tied up between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Nashville Predators. We’ll see if a catfish makes another appearance. (Don’t know what we’re talking about, click here).
