Brett Farve

5 Of The Best Movie Cameos By Athletes

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard made a cameo in Sunday’s Game of Thrones and that sparked a debate over athletes whose side hustle is acting. We use the term actor lightly, but nonetheless they were in a movie, which is more than we can say.

Don’t quit your day job,

The Last Night’s Game Team

Five of the best movie cameos by athletes

  1. Mike Tyson. The song In The Air Tonight will never be the same after the scene with renowned boxer Mike Tyson in The Hangover. Luckily for the wolf pack he didn’t bite anyone’s ear.
  2. Brett Farve. There was Something about Mary and Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Farve (NFL – National Football League) managed to figure that out and get the girl at the end. Kind of.
  3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Not many on this list had as pivotal of a role as NBA (National Basketball Association) legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1980 classic comedy, Airplane. As co-captain Murdock, he spent the movie denying that he was actually a basketball player. And don’t call me Shirley.
  4. Ronda Rousey. The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion was the love interest of Turtle in the Entourage movie. Even though she quite literally kicked his butt in the gym, he was still smitten.
  5. Lance Armstrong. The cyclist gives a game changing motivational speech to Vince Vaughn’s character after quitting the team. Lance Armstrong’s speech in Dodgeball now seems a bit awkward after the doping scandal including, “Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life.” We could think of a few other things he might regret.

  • Parents and school administrators are cringing this morning after UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen, who is one of the best in college football, made a bold statement in an interview. He said, "Look, football and school don't go together. They just don't. Trying to do both is like trying to do two full-time jobs." Before you cry, he also said he wants to get his MBA so he can own the world when he's done with football. Life goals.

Sideline stat

  • The New England Patriots have outdone themselves. The Super Bowl champions are the first NFL team to purchase a plane for team travel. But wait there’s more. They bought a second plane as well because two planes are always better than one.

Coaches’ corner

  • Yesterday, ESPNU transformed to ESPN8: “The Ocho” and it was incredible. “The Ocho” was originally featured in the movie Dodgeball (see above) and this real-life version lived up to expectations. The one-day channel featured seldom seen sports like the World Darts Championship (think boxing match fanfare and tension but with darts) and sports we’ve never heard of like kabaddi, which is a full contact team game of tag that originated in India.

The Rundown: 5 Intriguing Things to Know About Aaron Rodgers

Happy Hump Day! You’ve made it this far – just keep going. That’s what we’re saying about those new year’s resolutions too.

Eh who needs dry January anyway?

The Last Night’s Game team

Five INtriguing things to know about Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

  1. On-field performance – The former backup quarterback to the great Brett Farve is one of the hottest players in the NFL with his team on a seven game winning streak. During that time, he’s thrown 19 touchdowns with 0 interceptions. Rodgers was named the league MVP in 2011 and 2014. We’ll see how he holds up this weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.
  2. Rodgers' go to touchdown dance involves imitating a WWE wrestler putting on a championship belt. When he won the Super Bowl the WWE sent him an actual World Heavyweight Championship belt. Everyone wins.
  3. His girlfriend, actress Olivia Munn, had no idea who he was when they first met, even though he had previously won a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP title. Now that’s a blow to the ego. She should've at least known him from his Allstate “Discount Double Check” commercials.
  4. His younger brother and former NFL quarterback, Jordan Rodgers, won the Bachelorette but not before airing the Rodgers family dirty laundry to the nation. Aaron wasn’t thrilled with the reporter questions that followed and refused to disclose any details. Glad we didn’t have to attend that holiday gathering.
  5. He’s more than football smart. In 2015, he appeared on Jeopardy and beat astronaut Scott Kelly. What like it’s hard?

NCAA Football (College)

  • That was epic. The last game of the college football season did not disappoint. Clemson and Alabama played a game for the ages. Alabama led most of the game but Clemson took the lead when it mattered, with one second left in the game. This is Clemson’s first championship in 35 years. Their quarterback Deshaun Watson was named the game's MVP for his great performance in the last game of his college career.

Shout out to our Last Night’s Game Bowl Game Challenge winner, Russ. Nice picking. Congrats to you!

  • FIFA announced in 2026 that the World Cup will expand from 32 teams to 48 teams. Perhaps it'll give Team U.S.A. a chance to make the tournament? (They are very close to not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup).

Coaches’ corner

  • Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo won the distinction of the World’s Best Player from FIFA (in English - International Federation of Association Football). Upon receiving the award his son yelled at his dad “You’re the best in the world!” Queue hearts everywhere melting.

The Rundown: Weekend Preview Edition - And So It Begins

Tonight’s the night we’ve all been waiting for - the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Rio (7:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC). Not to be outdone, the NFL will induct the newest members of its Hall of Fame this weekend.

As always, a big weekend in sports and we have it covered so you can be the sports savvy guest at the party.

You little know it all,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – Make sure to brush up on your Olympics facts by reading Wednesday’s “Five Things You Might Not Know About the Olympics.”

NFL (National Football League)

Enshrined. Former NFL superstars Brett Favre, Kevin Green, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace, Dick Stanfel, Ken Stabler, Eddie DeBartolo Jr. (owner) and Tony Dungy (coach) will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend.  In celebration, the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts will play the Hall of Fame game on Sunday.

Summer Olympics

Women’s win. U.S.A. Women’s soccer opened the Olympics with a win. They beat New Zealand, 2-0. Fans chanted “Zika” and booed U.S.A. goal tender Hope Solo whenever she had the ball. Solo was vocal on social media about her Zika concerns coming into the Olympics.

NCAA football (NCAA)

The Tide is high. The first preseason Amway Coaches Top 25 college football poll was released and it has Alabama (#1) and Clemson (2) at the top. The two teams played each other for the National Championship last season. (Alabama won). College football season starts August 27th.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

Oklahoma is OK. Unlike his former teammate Kevin Durant, star Russell Westbrook chose to stay with Oklahoma City Thunder. (Durant went to the Golden State Warriors). Westbrook showed his commitment to the team by signing a three-year deal and they showed him the money - $85 million over three years.

Overtime

Quarterback Brett Favre (who you may also recognize from the Wrangler Jeans commercials) made a decision that is really going to make some cheese-heads angry. He has chosen to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame as both a Packer (where he played 16 seasons) and a Viking (he played there one season after being forced out of Green Bay and after the NY Jets). The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers are the biggest rivals and it looks like they’ll go down in history together.

Sideline stat

NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon will be substituting for Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the next two weeks.  (Earnhardt is still suffering from concussion-like symptoms). Sunday's race at Watkins Glen (a road course in upstate New York) marks Gordon's 800th career start.  That's the most starts for any active driver and only eight other drivers in history have more starts.

Coaches’ Corner

A controversial IndyStar.com report was released detailing the improper reporting of sexual abuse and harassment in U.S.A. women’s sports. According to the story, many complaints of abuse against the former coaches of women’s gymnastics, volleyball and basketball have been swept under the rug and not reported to authorities.
