1. The combine (pronounced kɒmbaɪn– like a harvesting tractor).  is known as the “Underwear Olympics” because prospects compete in different challenges in small, tight-fitting workout gear all while being scrutinized. It wasn’t long ago that prospects stripped down to their underwear for the “eyeball test” where coaches would make notes about their stature, muscle build, etc. IT’S LIKE PRIZED CATTLE GOING TO MARKET

2. As if being in your undies isn’t bad enough, teams are known for asking really weird and intrusive questions. The 338 players who have been invited to the tryout will be asked interrogation-style questions in an attempt to evoke the player’s vices (drinking, drugs), ethics, failures, sexual orientation (even though technically this is illegal) or anything to get a rise out of the player. WHERE’S THE HR DEPARTMENT? 

3. Unlike in the last election, hand size matters in the combine. Expect that to be a challenge for last season’s Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Kyler Murray, who is notably small for the NFL. (You may remember that Murray originally signed a professional baseball contract and then chose to try out professional football). What are teams looking for? According to an NFL (National Football League) executive, there’s not a quarterback in the NFL that has a smaller hand than a 9-inch hand, the span from the thumb to the pinkie. 4. The “sexiest” event in the combine is the 40-yard dash. In the past, the fastest runner has won prizes such as a private island or $1 million. For the 15th year in a row, sports reporter Rich Eisen will participate in the dash, while wearing a suit with cleats, to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. RUN RICH RUN

5 Things You Need To Know About The Business Of The World Cup

1. We don’t like to throw around stats but they’re important for this one. There’s a reason the World Cup is the world’s most watched sporting event with over 3.2 billion people (essentially half the world’s population) watching the last World Cup. The sport itself is huge. In FIFA’s (Fédération Internationale de Football Association aka International Federation of Association Football) last count, over 265 million people in the world or 4% of the world’s population participates in some form of organized soccer. BY THE NUMBERS

2. The numbers surrounding the tournament are astounding with an expected $6 billion in revenue for FIFA and a prize pool of $791 million, of which $400 million will be awarded to teams based on their performance. WHERE DOES THE REST OF THE MONEY GO?

3. Besides the bragging rights and the eyesore 18-carat gold trophy, teams are competing for some serious prize money. The teams’ national federations will take home $8 million for their team showing up and $38 million in prize money if they finish in first place, $29 million for second and $24 million for third. 4. Russia spent over $11 billion in a total of 11 host cities to put on the World Cup. While the tournament may provide a short burst of economic growth, the long-term benefits aren’t there. When countries bid on the tournament, unlike the Olympics where a city submits a bid, they are put through an evaluation process, which some say has been dishonest. 5. With this year’s host country (Russia) under sanctions, countries have had to walk a fine line when sending dignitaries to the games. For the first time in a decade, due to political disagreements, a member of England’s royal family will not be in attendance. Five Things You Need To Know About The 2017 World Series

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Houston Astros

1. Stealing a base isn’t easy but their effort equals your reward. If any player steals a base during the World Series, Taco Bell will hand out free tacos on November 1st. No pressure but America likes free tacos.

2. The hurricane devastation weighs heavy on the minds of both teams. The Astros have been part of the relief efforts and want to win to help their devastated city. Many players from both teams call Puerto Rico home and have been doing their best to help with its relief efforts.
 

3. The Astros are considered the underdog. In the team’s history, they have only been to one World Series. (They lost). The Dodgers have the biggest payroll in baseball but won their last World Series in 1988, when most of their players weren’t even born yet.

4. If Dave Roberts can lead the Dodgers to a World Series championship, he would be the first coach of Asian descent to win a World Series. He would also be the second African American coach to accomplish the feat.
 

5. Texas Governor Abbott and California Governor Brown made a friendly wager on the series. If the Dodgers win, Texas will have to send over a six-pack of Houston-brewed beer and Texas barbecue. If the Astros win, California will send over wine from the regions impacted by the wildfires.

The necessities. The Dodgers won last night in game one. They also had the best regular season record therefore, they have home field advantage. That means the first two and the last two games of the best-of-seven series will be played at Dodger stadium.  SCHEDULE
