COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Don’t doubt the underdog. Three top college teams unexpectedly lost to their underdog opponents over the weekend. Arkansas, Northwestern and Wisconsin all paid their under qualified opponents at least $1 million to show up for the home game and an “easy” win— only to walk away with a big, fat loss. TALK ABOUT AN EXPENSIVE MISTAKE.

OVERTIME

After a big win against the Philadelphia Eagles (the defending Super Bowl champs), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL- National Football League) quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick celebrated in style. He must have lost a bet because he showed up to the postgame press conference donning aviators, big gold chains and a substantial amount of chest hair. IF YOU’VE GOT IT, FLAUNT IT?

SIDELINE STAT

Someone had to raise the bar and set a new record.  Buffalo Bills (NFL) Vontae Davis could be the first player ever to retire in the middle of the game. He played until halftime and then said "I shouldn't be out there anymore" and called it a career. On the flip side, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge broke the world record for a marathon, finishing in two hours, one minute and 39 seconds. DANG, THAT’S FAST.

COACHES’ CORNER

Think back to what were you doing 18 years ago. That's when professional golfer Angela Stanford started her career. After 18 years, she finally won her first major tournament this weekend. Stanford says her win was inspired by her mother, who is battling a second round of breast cancer. PLEASE PASS THE TISSUES.

Little League Baseball World Series

Aloha champions. Providing their state with a much needed pick me up after Hurricane Lane, the team from Hawaii beat the South Korean team to claim the title of Little League Baseball World Series Champions. The Hawaiians and their opponents then engaged in an unusual series tradition, collecting a handful of infield dirt in baggies to commemorate their playing time. BRINGING SAND TO THE BEACH

Week one of college football starts this Thursday but the University of South Carolina Gamecocks are having to do a little extra cosmetic work before their season opener. This weekend’s Jay-Z and Beyoncé concert destroyed the turf, days before the team is scheduled to take the field. ALWAYS TIME FOR A LAST MINUTE FACE-LIFT

Sideline stat

Last season, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton led his team to a big victory over the Baltimore Ravens (NFL – National Football League). That win couldn’t save his Bengals postseason dreams but it allowed the Buffalo Bills to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. In gratitude, Bills fans donated $450,000 to Dalton’s charity. This weekend during his first game back in Buffalo, Dalton turned the tables and made a $450,000 donation to the Roswell Park Cancer Center in downtown Buffalo, earning him a standing ovation from the Bills' fans. Yesterday, The Players’ Tribune published an essay by Golden State Warriors’ (NBA – National Basketball Association) Steph Curry entitled “It’s Personal,” highlighting the need for gender equality. The NBA MVP is surrounded by women including his wife, Ayesha - a successful chef and restaurateur and two young daughters. PGA (Professional Golfers Association)

That’s Italiano. Everyone has their recipe for success and for The Open (aka the British Open) champion Francesco Molinari it involves pasta (seriously). Yesterday, he became the first Italian player to ever win a major. (There are four major tournaments during the golf season). On the flip side, golfer Eddie Pepperell said he owes his success to battling through a hangover. WE’LL TAKE THE PASTA

Overtime

Apparently, Clevelanders are having too much fun at Department of Motor Vehicles because the DMV had to take matters into their own hands to get people to stop smiling in their driver’s license photos. To turn that smile into a frown, they taped a photo of LeBron James to their camera. James left their Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA – National Basketball Association) for the Los Angeles Lakers. SMILING IS MY FAVORITE

The fresh face of American soccer, Christian Pulisic, proved that he’s wise beyond his years. A young fan rushed the field during Pulisic’s postgame interview, but instead of allowing security to haul him off, the 19-year-old star took the time to take a selfie and sign an autograph for the fan, making his day. What to watch

Basketball hall of famer Shaq kicked off Shark Week last night, facing his fears of swimming with sharks. Tonight, Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers (NFL – National Football League), New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski (NFL) and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn will all try to avoid becoming shark bait. Imagine being the person who had to draw up those insurance policies... BITE ME
