Little League World Series

Baseball players might be known as ‘Boys of Summer,’ but don’t tell that to Ella Bruning. She’s the only girl playing in the Little League World Series. The starting catcher for her Abilene, Texas team was an integral part of her team’s first LLWS win over the weekend. Bruning is the 20th girl to play at the LLWS in its history. You can catch her team play today at 1 pm ET on ESPN. SHOW THEM HOW IT’S DONE

And we thought Carrie Bradshaw getting dumped via Post-It note was rough. A minor league baseball game fan took it a step further, breaking up with his lady via scoreboard message. Those messages are usually reserved for well wishes and professions of love, but instead, it read, “Alyssa, this relationship is OVER. – Tim” Maybe it’s a stunt by the team, but that goes down as being more embarrassing than an actual scoreboard proposal. FOUL BALL

Sideline Stat

The Seattle Storm will visit the White House today – the first championship WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) or NBA (National Basketball Association) team to do so since 2016. Leading the WNBA at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are five-time gold medalist Sue Bird and recent gold medalist Breanna Stewart. ROLL OUT THE WELCOME MAT

We’ve all wanted to run from the office, and this racehorse is living our dreams. In her first-ever race, the horse, aptly named Bold and Bossy, broke loose on her way to the starting gate and then led both the sheriff and police departments along with a group of trainers on a 30-minute chase down a highway. PEACE OUT

What to watch

Things got a little (okay, a lot) out of control at the Nice-Marseille soccer game after a fan threw a bottle at a player. The player threw it back at the fan. After that, fans poured out of the stands and fought with players and opposing players were fighting each other. To say it was total chaos is an understatement. MORE ZEN PLEASE

NFL (National Football League)

United front. On Friday, President Trump called for teams to fire any “S.O.B." who kneels during the anthem. The comments drove players, coaches and owners to stand united during yesterday’s games. Players from all teams that competed Sunday participated in some form of protest, with many standing arm-in-arm in solidarity on the sideline during the anthem.

 

MLB (Major League Baseball)

Family ties. For the first time in baseball history, a son pitched against his father’s team. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Luke Farrell took on his dad’s Boston Red Sox. Even though they were rivals on the field, his dad beamed with pride from the dugout.

 

Overtime

The 10-time all-star Carmelo Anthony is slipping into a new jersey for the upcoming NBA (National Basketball Association) season. Once the face of the New York Knicks, Anthony is the newest addition to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He will play alongside superstars Russell Westbrook and Paul George but will his fashionable gal, LaLa Anthony, make the move to the Sooner state too?

 

Sideline stat

What would you do with $10 million? Yesterday that dream became a reality to golfer Justin Thomas. The 24-year-old won the FedExCup Championship, along with the sweet trophy and the hefty cash prize. (FYI – the FedExCup is akin to the Super Bowl or World Series for the PGA – Professional Golfers Association).

 

Coaches’ Corner

The tradition of championship teams visiting the White House goes back to 1865 but the NBA Champs, the Golden State Warriors, are no longer invited. Their invitation to visit was rescinded by the White House over the weekend after many of the team’s players said they would not attend. Want more on the tradition of White House visits? Five Things to Know About Championship Celebrations at The White House

1. The tradition of sports teams visiting the White House began in 1865 but it wasn’t until 1924 that the World Series Champion Washington Senators (baseball) were celebrated by President Calvin Coolidge. Although the NBA (National Basketball Association) champs didn’t make their first visit until 1963, NFL (National Football League) in 1980 and NHL (National Hockey League) 1991. 
2. Since you never show up to a party empty handed, teams typically bring along their winning trophy and a gift for the president, usually a team jersey. Not sure he has enough wall space for all of those.   
3. It’s not all pomp and circumstance. When the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) visited the White House, the team and the president packed over 3,000 care packages for troops serving overseas. During their time in the capital, the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) visited wounded veterans and the U.S.A. Women’s Soccer Team put on a youth soccer clinic. 
4. It’s not always warm and fuzzy as some players boycott the visit and use it as an opportunity to speak out against the president’s policies or the government. Others simply can’t make it. President George W. Bush said "I guess his grandmother died again" about the absence of Boston Red Sox (MLB) player Manny Ramirez.
5. When the New York Giants (NFL) visited in 1987, the team dumped a cooler full of popcorn on President Reagan to honor the traditional merriment of pouring Gatorade on the head coach to celebrate a victory.  

• Extra credit: It’s not only the professional athletes who visit, college champions and Olympic athletes have graced the Rose Garden with their presence.

• Pittsburgh Steelers’ (NFL) Antonio Brown violated the sacred space of the locker room after the team’s big playoff win this weekend. Brown streamed postgame locker room talk of head coach Mike Tomlin making not so nice comments about the Patriots, their next opponent.

Sideline stat

• When Brown took to Facebook, he violated the NFL’s social media policy. The policy prohibits social media activity 90 minutes before kickoff as well as after game through the postgame press conferences. Brown is certainly going to be fined by the league for that one. 

Coaches’ corner

• College football is a year-round grind and that became apparent when three players on the University of Oregon Ducks football team were hospitalized after an off-season workout. The Ducks’ strength and conditioning coach has been suspended. Phew and we thought working out with Jane Fonda was tough.
