Five things to know about the Super Bowl
- Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for a John Elway led offense when the Broncos won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1998-99. Elway is now the general manager of the Broncos.
- With a win, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera will be one of four people to win a Super Bowl as a player (Chicago Bears, 1985) and a coach.
- This is the first Super Bowl match up to feature number one defense (Broncos) vs number one scoring offense Panthers.
- Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is hoping to become the first player to win the Heisman, a College Football National Championship, NFL Super Bowl (pending) and regular season MVP (very likely - will be announced Saturday).
- A Broncos victory gives Peyton Manning 200 wins, the most wins ever by a quarterback. He is currently tied with Brett Favre at 199.
NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)
- Call 9-1-1. NASCAR driver Tony Stewart sustained a back injury over the weekend. The injury occurred in a non-racing accident on an ATV. The accident happened outside of San Diego and he was airlifted to a hospital. Stewart announced that this upcoming season will be his last as a driver. He’s been in the news the past year for killing another driver who was walking on the track during a race.
NFL (National football league)
- Adult supervision required. The Cleveland Browns announced that they intend to release quarterback Johnny Manziel aka "Johnny Football." The Heisman winner, has failed to live up to the hype since being drafted in the first round in 2014. His inability to stay away from partying and other poor decisions (i.e. skipping the final game of the season due to a concussion but instead of healing, he allegedly went to Vegas) have overshadowed his football abilities. (The team cannot officially release him until March 8th when the "new year" begins for the NFL).
Puppy Bowl
- Ruffing the passer. The Puppy Bowl will take place on Sunday at 3 pm (EST) on Animal Planet for people who don’t care about football or just want a cuteness overload. You can create your own Puppy Bowl fantasy team. Check out the most adorable starting line up.
Overtime
- Wednesday is “national signing day” which is when high school recruits announce which college they will be attending in the fall. University of Michigan is pulling out all the stops with alumni Tom Brady and Michigan fan Derek Jeter, who will be on campus to help twist some arms.
Sideline Stat
- The NFL announced that it has reached deal with NBC and CBS to show five Thursday night games a piece for the next two seasons. The deal is reportedly worth $500 million. NFL network will also show the other eight games.
Coaches’ Corner
- Phoenix Suns fire head coach Jeff Hornacek who was in his third year with team. The team has lost 19 of their last 21 games.
