Summer Olympics

Now that the Summer Olympics have been postponed, there has been a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Japan. Before the announcement, it seemed the country had the virus under control even as it spread in neighboring countries. Now a lockdown is looming to keep the virus under control. This spike is raising concern that country originally underreported cases due to the Olympics. THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMM

How do you know people are bored? Summer Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) set a four-week deadline to determine if they should postpone the Summer Olympics in Japan. The IOC says cancelling the games is not on the table. The Canadian and Australian Olympic Committees won't send athletes to the games unless it's delayed a year. Both U.S.A Track and Field and Swimming are advocating for a one-year delay. Not only are the athletes dealing with the same stressors as the rest of us, but with gyms and even the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee main training facility closing down, they’re running out of places to train. TIME WILL TELL

If you’re like us, the number of calories you’re burning while staying home is hovering around the double digits. Well, one Frenchman found a solution honor the medics while staying fit. He ran a marathon on his 22-foot balcony while on lockdown. His girlfriend gave him M&Ms to fuel him during his quest. (In case you’re wondering, his balcony is a little shorter than the length of two MINI Coopers bumper to bumper). SO DIZZY

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) drivers got behind the wheel for a virtual Homestead race yesterday with big names like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and this year’s Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin joining in on the contest. Drivers raced from the comfort of their own homes where they didn’t even have to wear shoes and their kids acted as their “pit crew.” The winner Denny Hamlin said he will be donating $6,400 toward the coronavirus relief efforts with sponsors and other drivers also making contributions. With nearly zero option for sports, Americans fell in love with Aussie Rules Football. It’s a mix between rugby and an aboriginal game called “Marngrook” that was created at the Melbourne Cricket Club to keep cricketers in shape during their off-season. Sadly, the Australian government eliminated non-essential travel so the league is on hold for now. WELP, THERE WENT THAT IDEA

NFL (National Football League)

While you were stocking up on wine and canned goods, NFL players and owners were getting it done at the negotiating table. Last week we talked about how there have been a handful of seasons in professional sports stopped because of contract negotiations. The 2021 season of the NFL was in jeopardy with the current collective bargaining agreement up in the air. Yesterday, the players and owners came to agreement on a new deal that includes one additional game for a total of 17 starting in 2021, expanding the playoffs and relaxed punishment for THC. With baseball on hold for the foreseeable future, Cincinnati Reds (MLB – Major League Baseball) pitcher Trevor Bauer organized a “Sandlot-style” whiffle ball game with other big leaguers to raise money for stadium workers who won’t be able to work without games. HITS FOR GOOD

Sideline stat

The controversial NFL collective bargaining agreement passed with 1,019 yes votes and 959 no votes. It’s been said that hundreds of players didn’t bother to vote. IF YOU DIDN’T VOTE, YOU CAN’T COMPLAIN

Players and owners have stepped up in the wake of cancelled sporting events. From the first NBA (National Basketball Association) player diagnosed with coronavirus, Rudy Gobert to Zion Williamson to J.J. Watt, they’re donating funds for testing supplies, research and to support the stadium workers who won’t be able to work without games.
