Get Your Game Face On

College football bowl game season and “The Bachelorette” go head-to-head, the playoffs are set and hockey season is happening.

Refine your wrapping skills and sharpen your tongue - it’s party time.

Game on,

The Last Night’s Game Team

College Football

We don’t want to jinx it but after a season of highs and lows, it looks like we will be able to crown a college football champion. We now know that Alabama (No. 1) will take on Notre Dame (No. 4) and Clemson (No. 2) will face off against Ohio State (No. 3) on January 1 in the playoffs. ‘Bama and the Irish were supposed to play in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena but due to California’s COVID regulations that prohibit fans from attending, the game has been moved to AT&T Stadium in Dallas. KICK OFF 2021

It’s been a rough year for Vanessa Bryant who lost her husband, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, and her daughter Gianna in a helicopter accident in January. Now her mom is suing her claiming that she, Sofia Laine, was an unpaid “longtime personal assistant and nanny” and that Kobe “promised to take care of” her “for the rest of her life.” Laine is seeking back pay for all of the hours she’s worked over the years helping out and taking care of her grandchildren at the rate of $96/hour. In addition she is seeking “$5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV.” In a statement to Us Weekly, Bryant said that Laine “has spiraled out of control” and is “continuing to try and find ways to extort a financial windfall from our family.” AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR HOLIDAYS WERE CONTENTIOUS

Sideline stat

The New York Jets (National Football League) secured their first win of the season but it was bad news for the team. Why? With the win, they lost their grip on the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft which would presumably be used on Clemson’s quarterback Trevor Lawrence. In other shocking NFL news, for the first time in 11 years, the New England Patriots will miss out on the playoffs. BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR

Coaches’ corner

Tiger and Charlie Woods had fans swooning while playing together at the PNC Championship (golf). While the father and son combo didn’t win, their twinning was a win in our book with the matching fist pumps to their traditional “Sunday Red.” Charlie is the youngest player to every play in the tournament. THE APPLE DOESN’T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE

What to watch

College Football Bowl Season starts today. There aren’t nearly as many games as usual with games being cancelled and teams dropping out but regardless, there’s plenty of football to watch during “The Bachelorette” commercial breaks. (Don’t forget to set your brackets)! SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Also, the NBA (National Basketball Association) regular season begins tomorrow.

Are We Good?

The Cleveland Indians new name, a painful payout and a woman makes history in college football.

Avoid controversy this week with us – there’s something for everyone to talk about.

Give it a go,
The Last Night’s Game Team

College Football

The college football season is coming to a close but not without cementing its place in the record books. Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller became the first woman to score a point in a power five conference (i.e. the biggest five conferences in college football). Then there’s Arizona State University’s Jackson He who became the first Chinese-born player to score a touchdown. It’s worth noting that he is the only Chinese-born player in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision – which is home to the biggest schools in college football). Earlier this season, his team surprised him with his name in Chinese characters on the back of his jersey. TOUCHDOWN!

Overtime

The Cleveland Indians (MLB – Major League Baseball) have vowed to drop the Indians from their name this season, a nickname they’ve used since 1915. They phased out Chief Wahoo as their mascot last season. This comes amongst a bigger push by professional sports teams to stop using Native American names. Maybe the team will return to their previous name the Cleveland Naps. (We couldn't make this up if we tried).WE LOVE A GOOD NAP

In a year where many college programs are hurting for money, Auburn fired their head football coach Gus Malzhan. Now they owe him $21 million in the next 30 days to buy out the remainder of his contract. PAINFUL PAYOUT

Coaches’ corner

College Football Bowl Game Season is fast approaching and bowl games are being cancelled left and right and teams are opting out of the games that are still in play. These games are usually huge paydays for the teams, who are hurting for cash this season but stay tuned for who is in and who is out. The biggest games that matter between the top four teams in the country are still on so the national championship is not in jeopardy. SOME SENSE OF NORMALCY

Serving up the best way to make a connection.

Show ‘em what you got,

The Last Night’s Game Team

NFL (National Football League)

If you thought you had a rough Sunday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) can probably do you one better. Team personnel jumped out of bed at 3:30 am with a notification that seven of their players/coaches tested positive for COVID ahead of Sunday’s game. They spent the wee hours of the morning facilitating contract tracing and getting everyone out of bed to get re-tested. Turns out all seven of those original positive tests were false positives due to a lab testing error. It seems the early morning may have taken a toll on the former Super Bowl champs as they barely pulled off a win against the struggling Denver Broncos yesterday. IT’S GOOD WHEN IT WORKS

Overtime

This year Sports Illustrated recognized the activist athlete as their 2020 Sportsperson of the Year. This year’s award recognizes five activist athletes: LeBron James (NBA – National Basketball Association), Breanna Stewart (WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association), Patrick Mahomes (NFL), Naomi Osaka (tennis) and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (NFL) for being champions on the field and champions for others off it. Out of this group, four are under the age of 30 and unlike the others, Duvernay-Tardif put his football career on hold to do his part in the fight against COVID and work in long-term care facilities in his home country of Canada. James is the only athlete to take home this honor three times (2012, 2014, 2020). STRONGER TOGETHER

The true winner from election night, MSNBC political correspondent Steve Kornacki, recently landed a spot in People Magazine’s sexiest man alive issue and now he’s landed another role of a lifetime. Kornacki appeared on Sunday Night Football predicting which NFL teams will go to the playoffs - election night style. He wasn’t totally out of place as he had his token touchscreen while talking stats in his signature khaki pants. In a tweet, he said, “Been a fan for years and it’s incredibly exciting to get a chance to take part in Sunday Night Football." DREAMS DO COME TRUE

Coaches’ corner

After the success of the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. exhibition fight (boxing), Floyd Mayweather is jumping on the bandwagon. He will fight YouTube personality Logan Paul (who fought in a pre-fight to the Tyson match) in an exhibition fight on February 20. Don’t worry, Snoop Dogg, who may have been the best part of the Tyson-Jones matchup as the performer and ringside commentary, wants in on this matchup as well. EVERYBODY IS DOING IT
