Dreaming Of A Polite Christmas? We've Got You.
How to keep your holiday merry and bright.
(Podcast length - 4:26 mins)
We all have this idyllic vision of our family holiday with chestnuts roasting on an open fire while drinking eggnog and laughing in our Christmas sweaters. Now let’s be honest; that only happens in the movies. When things take an awkward turn, here are a few ways to redirect the conversation to safer ground.
WHEN anyone starts talking POLITICS, all you want to do is run.
Hold your horses; there's a way to deflect into safer conversational waters. You could make a joke about politics being controversial and then dive into something non-confrontational – random acts of kindness. NBA Hall of Famer and broadcaster Shaquille O'Neal is known for his random acts of kindness. From buying an engagement ring for a fellow customer at a jewelry store to purchasing shoes for a 13-year-old boy with size 18 feet to a new car and food for a family in need, may Shaq's generosity inspire us all this holiday season to do more good.
The holidays are a time of year to give, and no one gives more than these five athletes who give back to their community in a big way.
AT YOUR OFFICE POTLUCK, YOU'RE STUCK IN A CONVERSATION WITH THE MOST BORING PERSON IN THE OFFICE WITH NO RESCUE IN SIGHT
They must be passionate about something – pets, travel, stamp collection, or not having to work on Christmas. Christmas Day is usually a coveted day for NBA teams to take the court, but this year, they're being overshadowed by the NFL. The empire that is the NFL has a tripleheader planned for Christmas Day. If you're staying up late waiting for Santa, you can catch a game on Christmas Eve. EGGNOG AND ENDZONES
YOU WERE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY, BUT NOW THERE'S NOT ENOUGH ADVIL IN THE WORLD TO STOP YOUR HANGOVER.
You can thank athletes like Danica Patrick for that infamous "one last glass." The retired racecar driver has gone from breaking the glass ceiling in racing to wine. One might say her career drove her to drink, but she's accomplishing a dream in retirement. No, really. Her Napa Valley vineyard Somnium means "dream" in Latin.
From wine to tequila, here are more athletes you can thank for your next hangover.
WHEN YOU PUT ON YOUR BIG FAKE SMILE BECAUSE YOU RECEIVED YET ANOTHER PAIR OF UNDERWEAR
Be a good sport because it could be worse. It's bowl game season, and the winning coach of the Duke Mayo Bowl will get mayonnaise dumped on his head instead of the traditional Gatorade. After a flub last year that resulted in a near concussion, the bowl game has hired official "Mayo Dumpers."
If you need New Year's plans, the top four teams in the country (in ranking order – Georgia, Michigan, TCU and Ohio State) will take the field on New Year's Eve in the College Football Playoffs. The two winners will play for the national championship on January 9.
For more on what you need to know for bowl game season, check out our "Five Things You Need To Know About Bowl Game Season."
No matter how hard you try, your sibling always upstages your gift with your nieces and nephews.
Do you know who is good at epic gifts? Athletes. Like Trevor Siemian. The Chicago Bears QB, Siemian loved Skittles, so he purchased custom parkas for his linemen that dispense Skittles. Yes, the fur-trim hooded parkas have a button on the chest that, when pushed, Skittles arrive in a coat pocket.
Need last-minute gift ideas? These athletes deserve a championship trophy for the well-thought-out gifts to their teammates and loved ones. READ

What You Need To Know About College Football Bowl Game Season
The couch is calling.
(Podcast length - 5:07 mins)
While you might be knee-deep in the holiday shopping season, others are immersed in college football bowl game season.
Transcript
1. What's in a name? Well, for bowl games, it's big money, with the cheapest bowl game sponsorship costing an estimated $500,000. The committees will do anything to please their title sponsors, including naming the game something odd. The most memorable bowl game names roll off the tongue this season, like the Cheez-It Bowl, Gasparilla Bowl, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, and the Cure Bowl. And yes, there used to be a game called the Salad Bowl. HOW LONG UNTIL WE HAVE THE SMOKE-A-BOWL?
2. Not all teams are invited to bowl games. The program's TV exposure and additional revenue make a bowl game a coveted spot. Traditionally teams had to have six wins to be eligible, but then we had more bowl games than teams. So now the NCAA defers to a team's APR (Academic Progress Rating) for those final spots, and because of that, five-win Rice landed a spot in the LendingTree Bowl. HEAD OF THE CLASS
3. Players heading into the NFL Draft (National Football League) tend to opt out of participating in non-playoff bowl games, and teams are hoping NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) will change that. Who can turn down the offer from Cheez-It? They will honor one player from each of the four teams participating in its sponsored bowl games, the Cheez-It Bowl and Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. The players will enjoy the Cheez-It "Feelin' the Cheeziest" hotel rooms, which are precisely what you think they are – very orange. ORANGE YOU EXCITED?
4. If you think being named the Heisman this season was impressive, how about the title of "Mayo Dumper?" The winning coach won't get Gatorade dumped on his head at the Duke Mayo Bowl, but mayonnaise instead. For the record, Caleb Williams took home the Heisman Trophy this season. Still, of the finalists (CJ Stroud - Ohio State), Stetson Bennet – Georgia and Max Duggan - TCU), Williams is the only one not heading to a college football playoff game. WIN SOME, LOSE SOME
5. The top four teams in the country (in ranking order – Georgia, Michigan, TCU and Ohio State) will play each other on New Year's Eve in either the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix or the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Each conference receives $6 million for each team selected for a semifinal game and $4 million for each team that plays in a non-playoff bowl. There is no additional payout for the National Championship Game, only additional expenses covered. BOWLED OVER
Worth noting: Bowl game season begins on Friday, December 16. There are no bowl games set for New Year’s Day, January 1, which is traditionally a big bowl game day. That day officially belongs to the NFL this year, as New Year's falls on a Sunday. The winner of the two playoff games on NYE will play each other in the National Championship Game on Monday, January 9. SCHEDULE

Turkey Day Table Topics To Avoid Awkward Holiday Moments
Steer clear from a flare-up at the Thanksgiving table with easy ways to change the subject in any scenario.

Steer clear from a flare-up at the Thanksgiving table by avoiding these conversation minefields and diverting to safer (and dare we say sportier?) ground.

For any conversation involving politics
Plenty of political and Hollywood icons once ran the sidelines. Samuel L. Jackson, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Meryl Streep and four former US Presidents (Eisenhower, Roosevelt, Reagan and George W. Bush) had the cheerleader spirit. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the marching band. In college, you would've found Halle Berry, Steven Spielberg, Alan Greenspan and Lionel Richie entertaining you in formation at halftime. Much safer than venturing into the political minefield at the dinner table.
Or, if you're feeling like taking a walk on the wild side, share something from our post about five athletes who turned their fame into a career in politics.
If anyone brings up the disaster that was the Taylor Swift ticket on sale.
Do you want a disaster? Let's talk about the World Cup in Qatar. From the country's reversal of the decision to allow alcohol at matches to the Frye Festival-like accommodations to the long list of human rights violations in the country's preparation for the world's biggest sporting event.
On the positive side, Stadium 974 in Qatar is the world's first transportable soccer arena. The temporary stadium is made of repurposed shipping containers and can be completely dismantled, transported to another country and put back together like your Legos. Stepping on one of the said Legos likely evokes more swear words than the TS on-sale. WEIRD BUT F-ING BEAUTIFUL
When grandma asks you why you're not married…for the 10th time, that day.
Tell grandma that a long-lasting marriage isn't a sure bet, but you know what is? The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys (NFL - National Football League) taking the field on Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving tradition started for the Lions in 1934 and in 1966 for the Cowboys. So regardless of which team you're cheering for, you can count on these teams to play while you nap off your meal. EVERLASTING LOVE
When everyone wants to take family photos, but you just ate ten days' worth of calories.
Be thankful you don't have to pass a post-meal jiggle test. Some NFL team's cheer coaches conduct "jiggle tests" to assess the firmness of the cheerleaders' bodies during the season, and if they don't pass the test, they're benched. With practices, appearances and games, they put in 30-40 hour weeks during the season, but most are required to have a full-time job elsewhere. When it's all said and done, on average, they make the same amount as the lifeguard at the community pool.
Want more? Check out five things you never knew about NFL cheerleaders.
For that relative who will drive 14 hours because they're afraid to fly
It's the first Thanksgiving without NFL broadcaster John Madden, a man who is synonymous with Thanksgiving football. Hall of Fame broadcaster Madden refused to fly because he was claustrophobic, so he adopted the now iconic Madden Cruiser bus for his cross-country adventures to games. The NFL is honoring Madden this year with a "Madden Player of the Game," as the best player in each game will get $10,000 towards their choice of high school football programs. Other areas include a "John Madden Thanksgiving" logo on the fields and helmets, as well as a Madden NFL 23 competition. AN HONOR

Celebrating 5 Veterans Who Are Also Professional Athletes
Thank you for your service.
(Podcast length - 3:29 mins)
In honor of Veterans Day, we salute our athlete veterans and say thank you for your service to all our veterans.
Transcript
1. MLB (Major League Baseball) legend Ted Williams' put his hall of fame career on hold for three years of military service. In the middle of his 19-year baseball career, he opted out of baseball and into the Navy for three years. During his assignment to the Marine Corps, his piloting skills were as revered as his ability to swing a baseball bat. In 1952, he missed part of the season when he was called up to fight in the Korean War. He returned home and finished his historic career in 1960. SOARED TO NEW HEIGHTS
2. Pat Tillman is likely this generation's most notable veteran. He walked away from a successful career with the Arizona Cardinals (NFL – National Football League) to join the Army after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. His brother joined the Army as well. Pat served with the Army Rangers until he tragically lost his life in action in 2004. TRUE LEADER
3. Before offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva played for the Baltimore Ravens (NFL), he went to West Point and served as an Army Ranger Captain until 2015. He has had quite an impressive football career since then. Villanueva is one of the few active professional athletes that are veterans. BRAVERY ABOUNDS
4. Before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers (MLB), he was drafted into the Army during World War II. While he never served overseas, he spent time at Fort Hood and Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky, where he served as an athletic coach. DEDICATED
5. Legendary "Coach K" - Mike Krzyzewski (pronounced Sha-chef-ski) - played basketball at West Point and served as a field artillery liaison to the infantry in the early 1970s at Camp Pelham. After his military career, he began coaching and was the basketball coach at West Point before leaving to coach the Duke basketball team. Krzyzewski, who also coached Team U.S.A., is the most successful coach in men's college basketball history and was inducted into the basketball hall of fame. Coach K will retire after the 2021-22 basketball season. SUCCESS AT ALL LEVELS

Our Favorite College Football Traditions
Creative, quirky and, dare we say, kind?
(Podcast length 4:07 mins)
They're weird, fun and a little heartwarming - after all, what is college for?
1. Iowa Hawkeye fans have started a tradition, the Iowa Wave. When the first quarter ends, fans wave to the patients at Iowa's Stead Family Children's Hospital, which overlooks the stadium. MOST IMPORTANT PLAY OF THE GAME
2. Florida State University began a “sod cemetery” in 1962. The team would bring back grass from their opponent's field after a win. But now, there are new rules in place. The Seminoles must be underdogs, or the victory must be in a championship or bowl game to warrant a sod funeral. REST IN PEACE
3. After their rival Georgia Tech discontinued their annual game, Clemson Tigers fans hit back with their wallets. They spent $2 bills stamped with the team’s signature orange tiger paw logo all over Atlanta. This 40-year tradition remains, with Clemson fans paying with said $2 bills when traveling to away games. WAIT, SOMEONE CARRIES CASH?
4. Remember when toilet papering a house was something you did to your worse enemy? Not at Auburn University. After a win, fans toilet paper the oaks on Toomer's Corner on campus. This tradition, which started in 1972, was stopped for three years after an Alabama fan poisoned the trees, but now it’s back. After 2020’s TP shortage, this tradition seems sinful. TWO-PLY PARTY
5. At the University of Wisconsin – Madison (aka Wisconsin), Badgers fans work off their tailgate treats at the end of the third quarter. When the song “Jump Around” by House of Pain is played, the entire stadium literally jumps. THAT’S ONE WAY TO BRING DOWN THE HOUSE

The Strangest Mascots In College Sports
They rally the crowd and scare the children (and sometimes adults).
(Podcast length 4:07 mins)
Add these mascots to the list of things that make you go hmm.
Scan to the bottom for images of these gems.
1. Replacing its Indian mascot in the 2000s, a student vote led to Dartmouth's unofficial mascot, "Keggy the Keg." The barrel of booze may be a fan favorite, but the Dartmouth administration also isn't very fond of Keggy. Sadly the school isn't very good at sports, so the rest of the world doesn't get to join in on the fun that is Keggy in the stands. TAP THAT
2. Wake Forest is known as the Demon Deacons. The odd mascot is an older man in a top hat and tails and is a byproduct of a frat boy facing a challenge from his peers. The aforementioned frat brother accepted the challenge of creating and becoming a mascot as a dare from a fellow frat brother. No one expected the joke to become a reality, much less that it would stick around as a vital piece of the institution. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR
3. Wichita State University is known as the shockers. (Yes, you read that correctly). The nickname was created because many of the players worked in the off-season harvesting (aka shocking) wheat in the fields. LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY
4. Kernel Cobb is the mascot for the Concordia College Cobbers. The liberal arts school based in Minnesota describes its mascot as a "snarly, though friendly" ear of corn. Long story short, in the 1890s, the term 'corncobs’ was initially used as a slur by their urbanite rival and was later adopted as the school's mascot. WE'RE ALL EARS
5. Stop us if you’ve heard this one about Speedy the Geoduck. The mascot of Evergreen State College, an experimental and non-traditional college in Washington State, is a symbol of environmental sustainability. Geoducks, a kind of mollusk, filter 30 gallons of water daily and are integral to the pacific northwest ecosystem. SOUNDS LIKE DINNER
Honorable mention: Artie the Artichoke, the official mascot of Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The 5 Things You Need To Know About The College Football Season
Sayanora summer and hello to fall, football and pumpkin spice lattes
(Podcast length 3:28 mins)
Saturdays are for football, friends and food. This week's podcast covers everything you need to survive college football season
Transcript
1. Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) has changed the landscape of college sports since being announced last year. Restaurant chain Hooters signed 51 offensive linemen. Plenty of players are making money but none like Alabama quarterback and defending Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young who is bringing home an estimated $3.2M. GETTING PAID
2. The Saturday morning staple, ESPN's "College GameDay," has a new addition - Peloton instructor Jess Sims. She will join the familiar faces of Gameday Rece Davis, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
3. Here are three storylines to follow on the field. Look for leading Heisman Trophy candidates Ohio State's quarterback C.J. Stroud and Alabama's quarterback Bryce Young to lead their team on the field. Former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley made a hasty exit from Oklahoma last year and is now living the California life as the head coach of USC Football. The Georgia Bulldogs are the reigning champions. FAST AND FURIOUS
4. Well, this is awkward. Major programs like Oklahoma, Texas, USC and UCLA have announced they are leaving their conferences, but not for a few years. HELLO, GOODBYE
5. You can't talk football without talking about tailgating. Unsurprisingly, the average tailgater is a male between 25-44 years old who spends over $500 a year on tailgating food by attending or hosting 6-10 parties a season. But that number may rise this year as beer prices have gone up 5% and groceries up 13%. MORE BEER, LESS FOOD

The Most Memorable Sports Moments Of 2021
A year worth revisiting.
(Podcast length - 5:22 mins)
In some ways, 2021 might have felt a bit like a reboot of 2020, but there were so many moments to be excited about. Let's look back before diving headfirst into 2022.
1. The college sports landscape changed forever with the July ruling that allowed athletes to be paid for their name, image and likeness (NIL). Athletes like the Cavinder twins who play women's basketball at Fresno State were the first to take advantage of the ruling. Some athletes like Michigan running back Blake Corum and Iowa lineman Tyler Linderbaum used their NIL money to benefit a good cause, not just their wallets. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT?
2. Mental health became a dinner table topic thanks to athletes like Simone Biles (gymnastics), Naomi Osaka (tennis) and Lane Johnson (NFL). Johnson took a leave from the Philadelphia Eagles to face his battle with depression head-on. Osaka withdrew from the French Open and Wimbledon to focus on her well-being. But the world saw just how the pressure impacted an athlete when Simone Biles battled the "twisties" in the Summer Olympics. She put her safety and her team first, withdrawing from the women's gymnastics all-around competition. BRAINS > BRAWN
3. Sports fans continued to realize what so many already knew, women's sports are the place to be. Not only did viewer ratings soar for the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), women's college basketball championship game and the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League), but we saw the first college softball game on a major national network. The NFL and MLB (Major League Baseball) added more female coaches and front-office executives. In 2022, look for the women's college basketball tournament to use the coveted "March Madness" title for the first time. HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
4. The year brought us athletes who seem to get better with age. Tom Brady won the Super Bowl with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL – National Football League), in February at age 43. (And then celebrated with maybe one too many shots at the championship boat parade). At 46, Helio Castroneves won the Indy 500, and Phil Mickelson showed off his impressive 50-year-old calves on his way to a PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Championship win. AGE-DEFYING
5. The delayed 2020 Summer Olympics gave the world the positivity and excitement we'd all been missing. COVID precautions meant athletes' families had to watch from the comfort of their couches, too, but the stories of athletes like Caeleb Dressel, Suni Lee and Katie Ledecky all brought us to our feet. The US topped the medal count with 113 total medals, 39 gold, including one from the US Men's Basketball Team, who continued their medal streak. WORLD’S GREATEST
Bonus:
If you’re a fan of F1 (Formula One) Racing, then you likely caught the race of the century when Max Verstappen beat out seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 championship. But did you know that Hamilton, the only Black F1 driver, is also a fan of fashion? He purchased a table at the Met Gala, which runs around $275,000, and filled it with three emerging Black designers to grow their reach. SMOOTH MOVE

We all have this idyllic vision of our family holiday with chestnuts roasting on an open fire while drinking eggnog and laughing in our Christmas sweaters. AT YOUR OFFICE POTLUCK, YOU’RE STUCK IN A CONVERSATION WITH THE MOST BORING PERSON IN THE OFFICE WITH NO RESCUE IN SIGHT
They have to be passionate about something – pets, travel, their stamp collection or a good cause. Like John Cena, whose heart is bigger than his biceps. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler’s mantra is “Never Give Up” and that’s what he’s told the countless Make-A-Wish kids he’s met with. There are so many moments to make you smile like the time he had a tea party with one Make-A-Wish visitor, while decked out in his full wrestling regalia. Because of the orchestrated nature of his sport, he’s even gone as far as to weave certain moves requested by the kids into his “performance” during a matchup. TINY UNIFORM, BIG HEART
The holidays are a time of year to give, and no one gives more than these five athletes who give back to their community in a big way.
WHEN YOUR GRANDPA TALKS POLITICS, SENDING YOUR FAMILY INTO A TIZZY
You know what’s not controversial? Getting someone a gift they love. Athletes might be known for their moves on the field, but their gift-giving abilities are their hidden talent. How about a parka that dispenses Skittles, an Audi A7 or a handwritten note? HERE’S HOW ATHLETES SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER IN THE LOCKER ROOM
You were the life of the party but now there’s not enough Advil in the world to stop your hangover.
Keep yourself in the game by trying this recovery routine. Former NBA (National Basketball Association) player Amare Stoudemire was known for bathing in red wine to help his post-game recovery so it’s no surprise that the former member of the Phoenix Suns and Israeli citizen created his own kosher wine. ZEN
From wine to tequila, here are more athletes you can thank for your next hangover.

The Most Awkward Athlete Product Endorsements

David Beckham for Young Fish Sticks
Nothing makes you want to fire up dinner faster than David Beckham's face on the side of a box of fish sticks. Beckham, who modeled Calvin Klein skivvies on billboards and Adidas endorsed Young Fish Sticks in 2010, complete with his picture on the side of the box. IN THE FREEZER SECTION

Wilt Chamberlain for Fletcher's Castoria for Children
Wilt the Stilt's endorsement of a children's laxative was undoubtedly more uncomfortable than a stopped-up system. What's better? His mom was in the commercials too. In the commercial, she talked about how when her son was feeling sluggish, Fletcher's made him feel like himself again. MAMA KNOWS BEST
Photo: Flicker
OJ Simpson for Hertz Rental Car
Oh, the irony. The man who was part of this century's most notable police chase was the spokesperson for a rental car company. Granted, the partnership was during Simpson's football career, and the high-speed chase was later but still. Simpson graciously offered to be the spokesperson again for the company in 2020 after they filed for bankruptcy. DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU?

Brett Favre and Wrangler Jeans
The partnership is one you're not likely to forget – cowboy meets NFL quarterback. And nothing says, let's play a game of football like a pair of jeans. The partnership became a little more awkward (and a target for "Saturday Night Live") after Favre got into trouble sending lewd photos to women. NOT IDEAL

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom for Unbreakable Bond Perfume
A public breakup is tough when you're a celebrity, but what about when you share a booming business like Unbreakable Bond unisex perfume? The perfume, which features images of the couple all over the packaging, wasn't exactly a best seller like Kylie's lip kits. However, there was a second perfume made just for the holidays – Unbreakable Joy. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

What Sports And An Episode Of 'Real Housewives' Have In Common
Drama, fights and shady sh*t aren't only reserved for Bravo.
(Podcast length - 6:05 mins)
They all have game, but some motives are more questionable than others.
Transcript
1. What do Lisa Vanderpump and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have in common? They want you to think of them at happy hour. Both Vanderpump and Johnson were successful, she as a restaurateur and he as a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler, but they have used their platform to launch incredibly successful careers. Vanderpump has gone from “Housewives,” to “Vanderpump Rules” to a new show, “Overserved.” She’s added author, owner of a pet accessory company to her list and of course, her restaurant PUMP is on the must-see in Los Angeles list. We all know Johnson wants you to buy his Teremana tequila, watch his movies and indulge in his line with Under Armor, Project Rock. WHAT CAN’T THEY DO?
2. Our next two are known for doing some shady sh*t. Enter in Jen Shah and baseball’s own Lenny Dykstra. We all know that Shah was indicted for her alleged role in a long-running telemarketing scheme. If convicted, she could go to jail for up to 50 years. Dykstra went from the top of the world as a World Series winner to prison. Long story short, post-baseball he claimed to have a 100% hit rate at picking winning stocks and convinced people to jump on board his bandwagon, including the money man himself - Jim Cramer. Eventually, Dykstra filed for bankruptcy and went to prison. DOWNWARD SPIRAL
3. The “Malice at the Palace” makes the infamous Teresa table flip look like child’s play. A 2004 tussle on the court led to a fan throwing a beer on Detroit Pistons’ Ron Artest (NBA – National Basketball Association). Instead of having security take care of it, Artest charged up into the stands and beat the crap out of said beer thrower. As you can imagine, the league didn’t think highly of this and Artest was suspended for the rest of the season (and the incident was about four weeks into the season). THERE’S NO “I” IN TEAM
4. You’d never thought we’d compare Ramona Singer and Heather Dubrow to an NBA star but the resident fashionistas and Russell Westbrook have a lot in common with their own clothing/accessory lines. Russell Westbrook is known for his sometimes over-the-top postgame looks. He launched Honor The Gift, featuring athleisure-driven clothing as well as high-end athletic wear called Westbrook XO for Barneys. Other proud owners of a fashion-related business are Serena Williams (Serena), Tony Hawk (Birdhouse and Hawk Clothing), Venus Williams (EleVen) and Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7). FASHION MEETS FITNESS
5. “The Scum Bunch” might be how fans feel about some of the men on the series, but they had nothing on the dastardly deeds of the 1986 New York Mets team. (“The Scum Bunch” was the nicest thing that was said about the team that we could put in print). There were tales of members of the team destroying airplanes by throwing cake and steaks (different flights), doing performance-enhancing drugs and massive lines of cocaine, drinking, chasing women, fighting and the list goes on. Somehow they still managed to get their butts on the field, play baseball and win a World Series. HEATHER DUBROW COULD TEACH THEM A THING OR TWO ABOUT CLASS

Life Of An NBA Referee
It’s a thankless job, but someone has to do it.
(Podcast length - 3:52 mins)
If you like being the boss, following the rules and look good in black and white stripes, then maybe a career shift is in order?
Transcript
1. While you’re going to have to work your way up through the system, NBA (National Basketball Association) referees take home anywhere between $150,000-$550,000, depending on experience. NBA referees have the potential to make more than the highest-paid WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association - player. (Highest annual salary in the WNBA is $221,450). Refs receive bonuses for officiating playoff games and the dollar amount depends on the importance of the game (i.e. you make more money working the finals). NAME YOUR PRICE
2. Remember Billy Crystal traveling the nation as an NBA referee in the movie Forget Paris? (Okay, maybe not). It wasn’t his best flick but like his character, referees travel for work 25 days a month for eight months. That equates to calling 65-70 games in an 82-game season, not including playoffs. HIT THE ROAD JACK
3. Imagine being called out by your boss every time you present in a meeting. That’s what happens to the referees in the NBA’s two minute reports. The public report critiques the referees’ calls within the last two minutes of the game and overtime. The refs also review tape after games to make sure they’re at the top of their game. AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR ANNUAL REVIEW WAS TOUGH
4. It's not all mental. They have to be physically fit too because they’re running up and down the court for the entire 48 minutes alongside the players. Referees work on their fitness regimen in the off-season as any athlete would and they train their brains by utilizing virtual reality. And unlike the players, referees have a vaccination mandate. GAMING THE GAME
5. Look out men, the women are taking the court, and technically, they're in charge. Danielle Scott, the daughter of a college basketball official, becomes the sixth full-time female referee this season. That's the most women the NBA has ever had on its officiating staff at one time. The 5 Most Scenic College Stadiums To Catch A Fall Football Game
Fall foliage (oh, and football) for the win.
(Podcast length - 5:20 mins)
Fall foliage and a little football, for the win.
Army
If you've never had a chance to attend a military academy sporting event, it's certainly something a sight to see. Now imagine watching all of that pageantry at Michie Stadium on the campus of West Point (Army) in New York that is nestled along a river amongst the trees. The setting is postcard perfect. STUNNING
Photo: Instagram/Penn State Football
Penn State
It's easy to get confused when we talk about Beaver Stadium that we're not talking about the home of Oregon State Beavers but the home of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The second-largest stadium in college football holds 100,000+ fans who take in the surroundings of fall colors. A white out is typically something reserved for the winter, but when all 100k+ fans wear white at a Penn State game, it is said to be "the best atmosphere in college football" and becomes a tough place for competitors to play. AT LEAST IT'S EASY ON THE EYES
UCLA
While they may not have the fall colors that the Northeast has, there's nothing like catching a game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. You won't miss the changing leaves (or the cold weather that goes along with it) when you're watching the sunset over the mountains that surround the stadium. The UCLA Bruins have the home-field advantage on sunset views. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

University of Washington
Husky Stadium in Seattle, home to the University of Washington Huskies, is known for the tailgate tradition of boatgating on Lake Washington outside the stadium. But the venue's other top attributes are the views of Downtown Seattle, Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Olympic Mountain Range to the west. The landscape is a welcome respite from the tension associated with a football game. VIEWS FOR DAYS

BYU
LaVell Edwards Stadium at BYU in Provo, Utah, may have just started serving caffeinated soda in 2017, but the views have been around since the beginning. Make sure to check out the ice cream made on campus when you're perusing the concourse for snacks at a game. (In case you're wondering, the school's honor code states, students, administration, and staff will "abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse.") CHEERS

Honorable Mention - Arizona State University
Honorable mention goes to Sun Devil Stadium (Arizona State University). Nuzzled up against a mountain, the desert sky provides the perfect background for not too chilly fall football. Just don't make the mistake of going to a game in the summer.

The 5 Best Football Traditions
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
(Podcast length - 4:30 mins)
If you're going to a game (or simply have friends who are football fans), from the NFL to college, here's what you need to know.
Transcript
LAMBEAU LEAP
The Lambeau Leap, which started as a spontaneous jump into the crowd by former Green Bay Packers (NFL – National Football League) player Leroy Butler in 1993, has turned into a tradition at Lambeau Field, home of the Packers. Minus during COVID, the scoring player jumps up the wall and into the crowd after almost every touchdown. ALL HANDS ON DECK
SMILE AND WAVE
Iowa Hawkeye fans have started a tradition, the Iowa Wave. When the first quarter ends, fans wave to the patients at Iowa's Stead Family Children's Hospital that overlooks the stadium. MOST IMPORTANT PLAY OF THE GAME
12
The Seattle Seahawks (NFL) have long given love to the 12th man (or woman), the fans, who are loud and provide the Seahawks with serious home field advantage. But they're not the only football team to give love to the 12s. At Texas A&M, the 12th man student section stands the entire game in support of their team. Texas A&M trademarked "12th man," and the Seahawks made a deal to pay the university $140,000 to use the limited rights of the phrase for five years. SMART INVESTMENT
TP + TREES
Remember when toilet papering a house was something you did to your worse enemy? Not at Auburn University. After a win, fans toilet paper the oaks on Toomer's Corner on campus. This tradition, which started in 1972, was stopped for three years after an Alabama fan poisoned the trees, but now it's back. No word if poor college students clean the toilet paper up afterward to stock their bathrooms, especially after COVID. LIKELY ONE-PLY
SEISMIC SANDMAN
As you might expect, a bone-chilling tradition that creates seismic activity starts with Metallica. The Virginia Tech football team takes the field to "Enter Sandman," and the noise from the fans registers as seismic activity. The team considered songs from Guns N' Roses and Alan Parsons Project before settling on Metallica. ROCK ON

The 5 Things You Need To Know About College Football Season
Everyone is talking about it, we have you covered so you can too.
(Podcast length - 5:03 mins)
Few things bring together our country like the Olympics and now college football season. To some, we are rolling into the most wonderful time of the year. Some might argue it’s like the holidays with the get-togethers, sometimes awkward small talk and tailgates with lots of food.
Transcript
1. COVID
COVID is the one to watch. Entire teams like Ole Miss, Boston College and Arizona are fully vaccinated, but the COVID protocols are different between conferences and schools. Most schools will welcome back stadiums at full capacity, tailgates and other gameday traditions but will require fans to show proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test.
All of the Power 5 conferences (SEC, The Big Ten, ACC, PAC-12 and Big 12) have declared that if one team can't play a game because of COVID-19, they will forfeit the game, and it will not be rescheduled. In all the conferences besides the SEC, it will be declared a no-contest if both teams can't play because of COVID-19. In the SEC, it will go down as a loss. MASK UP
2. Name, Image, Likeness
The Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) era begins after compensation for NIL for all college athletes became a reality this summer. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has never played a game for Alabama but is making seven figures in NIL endorsements. How will that impact players' future in the NFL? Time will tell but, in the NBA Draft, 88 early entry candidates (players who still have eligibility) withdrew from the 2021 draft after the announcement of NIL. CASH IS KING
3. Super Seniors
"Super seniors" will be a buzzword, and no, we're not talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jane Fonda. Due to COVID, the NCAA awarded players with an extra year of eligibility, some of who will be in their fifth or even sixth football season. AARP IS CALLING
4. Tailgates
You can't talk football without talking about tailgating. The tradition was essentially put on hold during the 2020 season so expect this year's parking lot parties to be full-on. Unsurprisingly, the average tailgater is a male between 25-44 years old who spends over $500 a year on tailgating food by attending or hosting 6-10 parties a season. Even more intriguing, according to tailgating.com, they also use separate coolers for their food and beverages. CLASSY
Make sure to check out our favorite college football traditions for something to chat about at your tailgate.
5. Who to watch
You might be tired of hearing these names, but Alabama, who won it all last year, tops the list even after losing a few star players to the NFL. Keep an eye out on THE Ohio State (Ohio State is very passionate about the 'THE') and always Clemson. Then there's Oklahoma, which is the only team at the top of the list without a CFP national title to their name. (The NCAA implemented the current CFP structure in 2014). GO TEAM!
A little something extra
All eyes are on Louisiana with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Exactly 16 years after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, Ida is forcing residents to evacuate, causing massive flooding and leaving millions without power. Tulane moved their home opener against Oklahoma due to storm damage. The game will now be played in OU's home stadium in Norman, Oklahoma, with all of the ticket proceeds going to Tulane. What You Need To Know About Sports Most Fashionable Night - The ESPYs
Athletes ditch their jerseys for couture this Saturday, July 10.
(Podcast length - 5:10 mins)
The ESPYs are like the Golden Globes – you get the best of both worlds. It’s the one night of the year where athletes and celebrities gather to celebrate the achievements in the world of sports while giving us the summer red carpet we’ve all been missing.
Transcript
1. Typically, the awards show takes place on a Wednesday in July after the MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star Game, referred to as “Black Wednesday,” the one day a year where there are no live sports. This year, with leagues playing COVID adjusted schedules, there is no dark day to hold the event. So that means there will likely be no Olympians, MLB (Major League Baseball) or WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) players or members of the Phoenix Suns or Milwaukee Bucks who are playing in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals in attendance. There’s a chance the Stanley Cup Finals (NHL - National Hockey League) will be over by then, but it’s not a sure bet. ZOOM CALL
2. Just because there will be no Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird sighting on the red carpet, it doesn’t mean you’ll be disappointed. The fashion game will undoubtedly be impressive when Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Russell Wilson and Ciara and LeBron James (likely promoting Space Jam 2) step into the spotlight. BEST ESPY LOOKS
3. Unlike the Oscars, where you’ve never heard of most of the movies, the fans get a say who receives some of the awards like the best athlete in women’s sports, best game and best team. EVERY VOTE COUNTS
4. ESPN can put together a video package that’ll pull at your heartstrings while leaving you inspired, and the awards at the ESPYs are no different. Here’s a quick summary of each of the major awards:
Chris Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to complete a full IRONMAN triathlon, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
Four-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic medalist Maya Moore will receive the Arthur Ashe Award Courage Award. She is being recognized for her work to free Jonathan Irons, who she felt was wrongly convicted of a crime. She stepped away from her career to work to free him. (Ultimately, he was released).
Manchester United (European soccer) star Marcus Rashford rallied Parliament during COVID to support children who received free lunch pre-pandemic, securing a $556 million grant to provide meals into 2021. For his work that impacted 1.7 million children, he will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service.
5. Actor Anthony Mackie, known for his many movie roles but especially in the Marvel series, will add ESPY host to his lengthy resume. Mackie is expected to poke fun at some of the best athletes on the planet in his opening monologue, which could be scarier than any script he’s encountered. Unlike most red carpet events, this one will take place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the Seaport in New York City. GET YOUR GAME FACE ON

Milk Chugging, Women Racing Alongside The Men and Snake Pits – Why The Indy 500 Is Worth Watching
Memorial Day’s favorite sporting event.
(Podcast length - 5:05 mins)
Start your summer by cruising with the windows down, the wind blowing through your hair and a smile on your face. That’s how Indy fans prefer their Memorial Day too.
Transcript
1. Move over Gatorade; milk is the drink of the winners at International Motor Speedway. The tradition that involves the winner swigging milk began in 1936 with Louis Meyer, whose go-to drink after a win was a refreshing glass of milk. An overjoyed milk executive spotted the act, and the rest is history. MILK…IT QUENCHES YOUR THIRST, SAID NO ONE EVER
2. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also known as the Brickyard. It’s called the Brickyard because the track used to be made of bricks, which are still exposed under the asphalt at the start-finish line. It’s a tradition for the drivers to kiss these bricks before the race. We cannot confirm or deny if that’s where cold sores come from. YOUR KISS IS ON MY LIPS
3. The race isn’t just for men. In its history, 10 women have raced at Indy, with Danica Patrick setting the record for the highest finishing position for a woman with a third-place finish in 2005. She is also the first woman to ever lead a lap at the Indy 500. Making history this race is the Paretta Autosport team with driver Simona de Silvestro. The team, which consists of mostly women, became the first female driver/owner duo in IndyCar Series history to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. MOVE OVER, COMING THROUGH
4. While you might not be familiar with the Indy 500, there will be familiar faces on the broadcast with retired IndyCar and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) driver Danica Patrick joining Mike Tirico and retired NASCAR (and current Indy Car road course driver) Jimmie Johnson in the booth. This year’s race is all about the youth movement, but six-time Indy 500 winner Scott “Iceman” Dixon beat out Colton Herta, the 21-year-old American, and Rinus VeeKay, 20, for pole position (i.e., the best place to start the race). EAT MY DUST
5. Something you never thought you’d want to know, yet here we are. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is considered one of the world’s largest spectator facilities with more than 250,000 permanent seats and average attendance at the Indy 500 of 300,000. Only 135,000 fans will be in attendance for this year’s race. The infield is 253 acres, which usually (in non-COVID years) hosts an EDM concert in the Snake Pit and includes a golf course. Churchill Downs, Yankee Stadium, Rose Bowl Stadium, Vatican City, the Taj Mahal, the White House, Liberty Island and the Roman Colosseum could simultaneously fit inside the Speedway. THE BIG HOUSE

The 5 Bachelor Contestants Who Will Give Matt James A Run For His Money
Who will be the perfect match for the former football player when it comes to physical fitness?
(Podcast length 4:31 mins - the transcript is below)
There has been no shortage of athletes when it comes to the men of “The Bachelor” franchise but what about the ladies? Mandy Clemens from Jesse Palmer’s season remains the only female member of the franchise who played an NCAA (i.e. college) sport.
That got us thinking, who on Matt James’ season could hang with the former football player when it comes to physical fitness. Because you know his family and friends seem like the type to run a turkey trot on Thanksgiving.

Abigail
The first thing we learned about Abigail is she has a hearing impairment but that didn’t stop the 25-year-old from earning the first impression rose and the first kiss on night one. The small town girl (Beaverton, OR has less than 98k people) loves to be outdoors and is ready to hit the links with Matt, 29. She has plenty of practice as she loves to play golf with her grandparents. CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT HOMETOWN DATE
Bri
Front runner Bri’s favorite activity may be brunching (whose isn’t?) but she loves spending time outdoors hitting the beach and hiking. Now Matt may live in Manhattan but even a city boy could use some time outside. Bri also has a tattoo on her rib cage that reads “thirteen” in Farsi so maybe she and Matt can take in an outdoor Taylor Swift concert or two as well? LOVE STORY
Illeana
Illeana is not only an entrepreneur like Matt but she’s also into health and fitness. The former synchronized ice skater made her own nutritional snack called “Funky Munky Energy.” It might be the perfect fireside snack while out on the ice. No word if her cat Sir Theo, who goes to the bathroom in a toilet, is into said nutritional snack though. I THINK WE’RE IMPRESSED?
Anna
While Matt will probably not be taking Anna from Chicago out fishing - she’s TERRIFIED of fish - she is an experience junkie. The girl who once convinced a pilot to let her fly a plane over the Minnesota bluffs seems like she would be up for any fitness challenge thrown her way. Will she and Matt paddleboard off into the sunset? TIME WILL TELL
Serena C.
Flight attendant Serena C. finds her happiest place in the closet putting together the perfect outfit but she does love a good chicken wing. (Maybe Super Bowl is her favorite holiday since over 5 billion wings are consumed that day)? Since her feet are never planted firmly on the ground and she's always up for an adventure we could see her being game for physical fitness, provided she has the right attire. WANNA GET AWAY?

The 5 Things You Need To Know About The College Football National Championship Game
DVR “The Bachelor” on Monday; this one’s going to be good.
(Podcast length 6:06 mins - the transcript is below)
Starting off 2021 with the second biggest football event of the year.
Transcript
1. The College Football National Championship Game is set between the Crimson Tide from Alabama (No. 1) and The Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 3). The game will take place where everyone wants to go in the winter – Miami on Monday, January 11. If necessary (and there’s a good possibility this could happen), the game would be pushed back to January 18. Both teams’ head coaches have had COVID, so all they can hope for is that you can’t get COVID twice. HOLDING OUR BREATH
2. Since it’s all about the Benjamins, a conference will receive $6 million for each team that is selected for the semifinal games. (Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State played in the semifinals). Keep in mind that this money goes to the conferences, not the schools directly, to distribute as they see fit. These were the payouts originally promised, but they could be smaller after a season and playoffs without fans. WHO’S GOING TO PAY THE BILLS?
3. Because why not? There will be friends, family and fans in the stands in Miami. The schools were given 3,750 tickets each and there will be 16,000 fans in attendance. The fans will have a chance to see the newest Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith (wide receiver) from Alabama, as well as Heisman runner-up in ‘Bama quarterback Mac Jones. The Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields was a Heisman finalist in 2019 and is a darn good football player, but he didn’t play enough games to impress the Heisman voters this year. Fields is also battling an undisclosed injury, which is likely his ribs, an injury sustained in the semifinals. IN IT TO WIN IT
4. If you’re keeping score, Alabama has won as recently as 2017 and Ohio State, 2014. Alabama head coach Nick Saban is currently tied with legendary Alabama head coach Bear Bryant with the most Titles at six. If he wins this game, he will break the record. (Anyone remember all the Bear Bryant references in “Sweet Home Alabama?” It makes sense now). LIGHTBULB MOMENT
5. It’s been quite the rollercoaster season for Ohio State. In August, the Big Ten (their conference) cancelled the season, only to reverse the decision later. But they didn’t make it to the championship game without controversy. Ohio State didn’t play the necessary number of games to qualify for their conference championship game, but they got in anyway. (Their last game was cancelled due to COVID, and even if they would’ve played and lost, they still would’ve qualified for the conference championship. Now you know in case it comes up). STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM NOW WE’RE HERE
