He spent his off-season writing to the people on this list, usually after they reached a milestone or retired. He would note the person's respect for the game along with his notes of best wishes. 2. Pitcher Max Scherzer (MLB - Major League Baseball) and quarterback Trevor Siemian (NFL - National Football League) know the way to a man's heart through their stomach. The Chicago Bears QB, Siemian loved Skittles, so he purchased custom parkas for his linemen that dispense Skittles. Yes, the fur-trim hooded parkas have a button on the chest that, when pushed, Skittles arrive in a coat pocket.

Scherzer spent time in the minor leagues rehabbing from an injury. He bought his Binghamton Rumble Ponies teammates Apple Air Pods and treated them to a $7,000 lobster and filet mignon dinner to thank them for their hospitality. A DREAM COME TRUE

3. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL) offensive line is a giving group that put a new spin on gift-giving. Instead of exchanging with each other, they pooled their money to give special bonuses to staff members who might get overlooked. These people take care of them daily, like the kitchen staff, trainers and the equipment team. THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

4. Pavin Smith is still in the minor leagues, but his heart is big league. Pavin used his $5M signing bonus from the Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB) to pay off his parent's mortgage. Smith joins famous athletes like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Russell Wilson (NFL), who bought their parents a home. GRATITUDE

5. A gift that was designed to be the gift that keeps on giving, New England Patriots (NFL) quarterback Mac Jones gave his linemen bitcoin for Christmas in 2021. Hopefully, they cashed in while it was good. BEST OF INTENTIONS

1. Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao went from the boxing ring to the Senate floor in the Philippines. This career move was the logical move for him to start working on his singing career. He has released two music albums in his home country. He ran for president of his native Philippines in 2022 but lost. JOIN THE CELEBRITY TRAIN

2. Jesse "The Body" Ventura dominated the ring during his WWE (Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment) career. But tiny speedos, knee-high boots and baby oil had nothing on politics in the Midwest. Ventura served as the governor of Minnesota, where he won spending $250,000 to his competitor's $4.3M. He raised funds by selling $22 t-shirts and accepting $50 donations from his supporters. IN IT TO WIN IT

3. There are a handful of U.S. Presidents who played college sports. Most notably Gerald Ford. Ford had quite the football career at Michigan. He played on consecutive undefeated national championship teams in 1932 and 1933. His jersey number, No. 48, is retired by the university. Ford turned down offers to play in the NFL. Instead, he went to Yale to become an assistant football and boxing coach, hoping it would help him get accepted into Yale Law School. THE REST IS HISTORY

4. We all love Kate McKinnon as Jeff Sessions on "Saturday Night Live," but did you know that former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville defeated Sessions in the Republican primary? Tuberville is now serving in the U.S. Senate. DON'T FORGET TO VOTE

5. Steve Largent went from the University of Tulsa to an NFL (National Football League) Hall of Fame career to Congress. The Seattle Seahawks legend left a lasting impression in the Emerald City; then he won his seat in Congress in his home state of Oklahoma. We've been binging "Loot" starring Maya Rudolph (Apple TV+). The story shares similarities with the Jeff Bezos divorce and many other celebrity divorces. That got us thinking, what were the messiest divorces in the world of sports? Well, here we go.

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren

The marriage between Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren was riddled with numerous affairs with a side of prescription drugs. But it all culminated in 2009 when Tiger Woods crashed his SUV. You might remember Nordegren used a golf club to smash the back window to get Woods out of the car. Nordegren's divorce filing came shortly after that. Woods admitted he was in the wrong, and she walked away with a rumored $100M settlement. Woods has only won one major since his divorce. KARMA?

Marylin Monroe and Joe DiMaggio

While Marylin Monroe and baseball's Joe DiMaggio were married in a quiet ceremony at City Hall in San Francisco, the quiet didn't last long. The couple's level of fame may have been their demise. Monroe tearfully told reporters that she was seeking a divorce from DiMaggio on the grounds of "mental cruelty." Initially drawn to her goddess-like ways, he was not okay with her flaunting it. Even after the divorce and her tragic death, DiMaggio still held onto their love. According to a Vanity Fair article, DiMaggio spoke about his ex-wife in his final words on his deathbed in 1999, "I'll finally get to see Marilyn." NO END TO LOVE

Hulk and Linda Hogan

Hulk Hogan and his wife Linda appeared to be a happy family on their TV show "Hogan Knows Best." After 24 years of marriage and allegations he cheated with their daughter's friend, the divorce came along with a lengthy, nasty court battle. It became messy again after that, with Linda dating Charley Hill, who was 19 at the time. Hill proposed to Linda on an episode of "Celebrity Therapy." They broke up, but he sued her for treating him like a laborer during their relationship. Hulk remarried, but they parted ways in early 2022. HULKMANIA

Scottie and Larsa Pippen

The bitter divorce of Larsa and former NBA (National Basketball Association) player Scottie Pippen spent a better part of the last few years in the headlines. Larsa filed for divorce again in November 2018 amid rumors the "Real Housewives of Miami" and former “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” guest star had an affair with rapper Future. The drama escalated when Larsa was pictured with another NBA player, Malik Beasley, who was married with a child. The divorce between the Pippens was finalized in December 2021. ONWARD AND UPWARD

Frank and Jamie McCourt

The divorce between Frank and Jamie McCourt was something out of a movie. Former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt separated from his wife of 30 years, Jamie, but it was a little awkward. You see, Jamie was the CEO of the team, and she was fired one week after the couple's separation was announced. So she filed for divorce. The public battle ensued. Long, bitter story short, she walked away with $131M and real estate assets, a far cry from half of what Frank sold the Dodgers for in 2012 - $2.5B. The two signed their divorce agreement in 2011 when the team was bankrupt. TAKE ME OUT TO THE COURTHOUSE

Honorable mention goes to three dissolutions of marriage. The first is Michael Jordan's divorce from his wife Juanita, one of the most expensive celebrity divorces of all time. Then in a story too weird that we had to mention it: New York Yankees Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich held separate press conferences during spring training in 1973, announcing they had traded wives. Entire families, actually, including dogs.

The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler’s mantra is “Never Give Up” and that’s what he’s told the countless Make-A-Wish kids he’s met with. There are so many moments to make you smile like the time he had a tea party with one Make-A-Wish visitor, while decked out in his full wrestling regalia. Because of the orchestrated nature of his sport, he’s even gone as far as to weave certain moves requested by the kids into his “performance” during a matchup. TINY UNIFORM, BIG HEART

The most memorable bowl game names this season roll off the tongue like the Cheez-It Bowl, TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and the inaugural Jimmy Kimmel Bowl LA Bowl. 1. What do Lisa Vanderpump and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have in common? They want you to think of them at happy hour. Both Vanderpump and Johnson were successful, she as a restaurateur and he as a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler, but they have used their platform to launch incredibly successful careers. Vanderpump has gone from “Housewives,” to “Vanderpump Rules” to a new show, “Overserved.” She’s added author, owner of a pet accessory company to her list and of course, her restaurant PUMP is on the must-see in Los Angeles list. We all know Johnson wants you to buy his Teremana tequila, watch his movies and indulge in his line with Under Armor, Project Rock. WHAT CAN’T THEY DO?

2. Our next two are known for doing some shady sh*t. Enter in Jen Shah and baseball’s own Lenny Dykstra. We all know that Shah was indicted for her alleged role in a long-running telemarketing scheme. If convicted, she could go to jail for up to 50 years. Dykstra went from the top of the world as a World Series winner to prison. Long story short, post-baseball he claimed to have a 100% hit rate at picking winning stocks and convinced people to jump on board his bandwagon, including the money man himself - Jim Cramer. Eventually, Dykstra filed for bankruptcy and went to prison. DOWNWARD SPIRAL

3. The “Malice at the Palace” makes the infamous Teresa table flip look like child’s play. A 2004 tussle on the court led to a fan throwing a beer on Detroit Pistons’ Ron Artest (NBA – National Basketball Association). Instead of having security take care of it, Artest charged up into the stands and beat the crap out of said beer thrower. As you can imagine, the league didn’t think highly of this and Artest was suspended for the rest of the season (and the incident was about four weeks into the season). THERE’S NO “I” IN TEAM

4. You’d never thought we’d compare Ramona Singer and Heather Dubrow to an NBA star but the resident fashionistas and Russell Westbrook have a lot in common with their own clothing/accessory lines. Russell Westbrook is known for his sometimes over-the-top postgame looks. He launched Honor The Gift, featuring athleisure-driven clothing as well as high-end athletic wear called Westbrook XO for Barneys. Other proud owners of a fashion-related business are Serena Williams (Serena), Tony Hawk (Birdhouse and Hawk Clothing), Venus Williams (EleVen) and Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7). FASHION MEETS FITNESS

5. “The Scum Bunch” might be how fans feel about some of the men on the series, but they had nothing on the dastardly deeds of the 1986 New York Mets team. (“The Scum Bunch” was the nicest thing that was said about the team that we could put in print). There were tales of members of the team destroying airplanes by throwing cake and steaks (different flights), doing performance-enhancing drugs and massive lines of cocaine, drinking, chasing women, fighting and the list goes on. The ESPYs are like the Golden Globes – you get the best of both worlds. It’s the one night of the year where athletes and celebrities gather to celebrate the achievements in the world of sports while giving us the summer red carpet we’ve all been missing.

Typically, the awards show takes place on a Wednesday in July after the MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star Game, referred to as “Black Wednesday,” the one day a year where there are no live sports. This year, with leagues playing COVID adjusted schedules, there is no dark day to hold the event. So that means there will likely be no Olympians, MLB (Major League Baseball) or WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) players or members of the Phoenix Suns or Milwaukee Bucks who are playing in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals in attendance. There’s a chance the Stanley Cup Finals (NHL - National Hockey League) will be over by then, but it’s not a sure bet. ZOOM CALL

2. Just because there will be no Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird sighting on the red carpet, it doesn’t mean you’ll be disappointed. The fashion game will undoubtedly be impressive when Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Russell Wilson and Ciara and LeBron James (likely promoting Space Jam 2) step into the spotlight. BEST ESPY LOOKS

3. Unlike the Oscars, where you’ve never heard of most of the movies, the fans get a say who receives some of the awards like the best athlete in women’s sports, best game and best team. EVERY VOTE COUNTS

4. ESPN can put together a video package that’ll pull at your heartstrings while leaving you inspired, and the awards at the ESPYs are no different. Here’s a quick summary of each of the major awards:

Chris Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to complete a full IRONMAN triathlon, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
Four-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic medalist Maya Moore will receive the Arthur Ashe Award Courage Award. She is being recognized for her work to free Jonathan Irons, who she felt was wrongly convicted of a crime. She stepped away from her career to work to free him. (Ultimately, he was released).
Manchester United (European soccer) star Marcus Rashford rallied Parliament during COVID to support children who received free lunch pre-pandemic, securing a $556 million grant to provide meals into 2021. For his work that impacted 1.7 million children, he will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service.

5. Actor Anthony Mackie, known for his many movie roles but especially in the Marvel series, will add ESPY host to his lengthy resume. Mackie is expected to poke fun at some of the best athletes on the planet in his opening monologue, which could be scarier than any script he’s encountered. Unlike most red carpet events, this one will take place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the Seaport in New York City. GET YOUR GAME FACE ON

Start your summer by cruising with the windows down, the wind blowing through your hair and a smile on your face. That’s how Indy fans prefer their Memorial Day too.

1. Move over Gatorade; milk is the drink of the winners at International Motor Speedway. The tradition that involves the winner swigging milk began in 1936 with Louis Meyer, whose go-to drink after a win was a refreshing glass of milk. An overjoyed milk executive spotted the act, and the rest is history. MILK…IT QUENCHES YOUR THIRST, SAID NO ONE EVER

2. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also known as the Brickyard. It’s called the Brickyard because the track used to be made of bricks, which are still exposed under the asphalt at the start-finish line. It’s a tradition for the drivers to kiss these bricks before the race. We cannot confirm or deny if that’s where cold sores come from. YOUR KISS IS ON MY LIPS

3. The race isn’t just for men. In its history, 10 women have raced at Indy, with Danica Patrick setting the record for the highest finishing position for a woman with a third-place finish in 2005. She is also the first woman to ever lead a lap at the Indy 500. Making history this race is the Paretta Autosport team with driver Simona de Silvestro. The team, which consists of mostly women, became the first female driver/owner duo in IndyCar Series history to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. MOVE OVER, COMING THROUGH

4. While you might not be familiar with the Indy 500, there will be familiar faces on the broadcast with retired IndyCar and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) driver Danica Patrick joining Mike Tirico and retired NASCAR (and current Indy Car road course driver) Jimmie Johnson in the booth. This year’s race is all about the youth movement, but six-time Indy 500 winner Scott “Iceman” Dixon beat out Colton Herta, the 21-year-old American, and Rinus VeeKay, 20, for pole position (i.e., the best place to start the race). EAT MY DUST

5. Something you never thought you’d want to know, yet here we are. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is considered one of the world’s largest spectator facilities with more than 250,000 permanent seats and average attendance at the Indy 500 of 300,000. Only 135,000 fans will be in attendance for this year’s race. The infield is 253 acres, which usually (in non-COVID years) hosts an EDM concert in the Snake Pit and includes a golf course. Churchill Downs, Yankee Stadium, Rose Bowl Stadium, Vatican City, the Taj Mahal, the White House, Liberty Island and the Roman Colosseum could simultaneously fit inside the Speedway. THE BIG HOUSE

1. The Green Rovers, a soccer team from Western England, is leading the charge to go green. They claim the title as the only vegan football (i.e., soccer) club in the world. Since 2015, there have been no animal products for sale in the stadium. Some of the players eat non-vegan outside of the stadium (and there are paparazzi photos to prove it), but some have adopted the vegan lifestyle. The raceway runs completely on solar power and has sheep for lawn mowers. But they have an industry-specific problem – what to do with as many as 600 used tires after a race? Answer – recycle. 4. Home field advantage for some sports teams is an urban farm. Fenway Park, one of the oldest stadiums in baseball, was granted its LEED certification. The home of the Boston Red Sox (MLB) also has a rooftop farm that generates 5,900 pounds of produce annually to be used in the stadium. The home of the San Francisco 49ers boasts a 27,000-square foot rooftop farm that generates 500 pounds of produce monthly. BATTING FOR BROCCOLI

3. Like a fine wine, Danica Patrick only gets better. The retired racecar driver has gone from breaking the glass ceiling in racing to wine. 4. A glass of fine wine and announcer Jim Nantz have something in common. They’re both smooth and are likely to put you to sleep (in a good way in Nantz's case) after consuming for an hour or two. Nantz, the soothing voice of the Masters and NFL on CBS, is behind the Healdsburg, CA winery The Calling. Also known for their time on the golf course and in the wine world are veteran golfers Ernie Els (Ernie Els Wines) and Greg Norman (Greg Norman Estates). 5. LeBron James doesn’t shy away from his admiration for wine (or apparently tequila) and neither do retired NBA players Dwyane Wade and Yao Ming. The university couldn’t afford the upkeep of Bevo so they fattened him up and slaughtered him before the banquet.

Q: What is the Westminster Dog Show is named after?

A: A bar.

The “sporting gentlemen” who came up with the famed dog show used to meet up at the Westminster Hotel to talk about their hunting dogs. So when they started the organization in 1877, they named it after their favorite place.

Q: The very first Wimbledon was in 1877 and was actually a fundraiser for England’s favorite sport at the time. What was that sport? (Hint: it’s not tennis)

A: Croquet

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was focused first on croquetbut then the good people of London began to fall in love with the new sport of tennis. The rest is history.

Q: This WWE wrestler holds the title for the most wishes (Make-A-Wish) granted by a single individual, with over 600 wishes.

A: John Cena.

The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) star is the most requested celebrity by kids for their Make-A-Wish.

Q: College GameDay mainstay Lee Corso played football in college at Florida State. Who was his football playing roommate who became a famous actor?

A: Burt Reynolds (RIP)

The two played together at Florida State in the 1950s and Corso is said to have been a catalyst in Reynolds’ acting career. Maybe his football experience is what drew him to the role in the 1974 version of “The Longest Yard.”

3. Her dad, 16-time champion and two-time Hall of Famer Rick Flair, is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and his daughter Charlotte Flair is living up to his legacy. The college volleyball player turned WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) star has been a trailblazer for women in WWE, with nearly a dozen championships to her name. “The Queen” was also the first WWE star to grace the pages of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. NASCAR’s (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) dynamic duo was Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. In 2001, Papa Earnhardt died from injuries sustained in a crash at the Daytona 500 at the age of 49. His namesake, Earnhardt Jr. won that same race three years later. Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather was also a NASCAR driver and his nephew races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. ONE FAST FAMILY

5. Basketball greatness runs in the family for Steph Curry, a three-time NBA (National Basketball Association) Champion and two-time league MVP. 1. International soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his cover model looks, supreme soccer skills and the big payday those bring in. While he’s not afraid to write a significant check, he’s also been known to roll up his sleeves, literally, as a frequent blood donor. The father of four has made a huge impact on his young fans all over the world. In one instance, he invited a Syrian orphan, who lost both his parents in the war, to a game and spent time with him. He has also paid for numerous children’s lifesaving medical treatments. His signature move is auctioning off coveted trophies he’s been awarded with the proceeds going to charity. 2. John Cena’s heart is bigger than his biceps. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler’s mantra is “Never Give Up” and that’s what he’s told the countless Make-A-Wish kids he’s met with. There are so many moments to make you smile like the time he had a tea party with one Make-A-Wish visitor, while decked out in his full wrestling regalia. Because of the orchestrated nature of his sport, he’s even gone as far as to weave certain moves requested by the kids into his “performance” during a matchup. TINY UNIFORM, BIG HEART

3. Love him or hate him, LeBron James (NBA -National Basketball Association) has left the community better than he found it. His big project is the I Promise School in Akron, OH. The school serves 204 at-risk third and fourth graders and even though it’s only been open one year, they’re seeing positive results. The year-round school has seen growth among the 90% of students – who started the school year at least one year behind grade level – met or exceeded their expected growth in math and reading. CHANGING THE FUTURE

4. Newly engaged couple P.K. Subban (New Jersey Devils, NHL – National Hockey League) and Lindsey Vonn (former U.S. Olympic skier) have charity work in common. Both are a force for good on their own but together they just might change the world. She hosts an annual Strong Girls Camp, where she works to increase confidence in young girls.

Subban has left a mark for good in every community he’s touched. He gave $10 million to the Montreal Children's Hospital but his most impactful work might be his Blueline Buddies program. He provided tickets to each Nashville Predators game (his former team), one for an officer and one for a young person and their guests. He did this in hopes of creating unity between law enforcement and the community. We’ll see what he has in store for New Jersey when the season starts next month. POWER COUPLE

5. No act goes unnoticed and Virginia’s head men’s basketball coach made a selfless choice that will benefit so many others. After winning the first ever national championship for the school, coach Tony Bennett recently turned down a raise. In an unprecedented move, he asked that the money be given to his assistant coaches and the school. He also pledged $500,000 toward a career development program for current and former UVA basketball players. GOOD GUY
