In some ways, 2021 might have felt a bit like a reboot of 2020, but there were so many moments to be excited about. Let's look back before diving headfirst into 2022.
1. The college sports landscape changed forever with the July ruling that allowed athletes to be paid for their name, image and likeness (NIL). Athletes like the Cavinder twins who play women's basketball at Fresno State were the first to take advantage of the ruling. Some athletes like Michigan running back Blake Corum and Iowa lineman Tyler Linderbaum used their NIL money to benefit a good cause, not just their wallets. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT?
2. Mental health became a dinner table topic thanks to athletes like Simone Biles (gymnastics), Naomi Osaka (tennis) and Lane Johnson (NFL). Johnson took a leave from the Philadelphia Eagles to face his battle with depression head-on. Osaka withdrew from the French Open and Wimbledon to focus on her well-being. But the world saw just how the pressure impacted an athlete when Simone Biles battled the "twisties" in the Summer Olympics. She put her safety and her team first, withdrawing from the women's gymnastics all-around competition. BRAINS > BRAWN
3. Sports fans continued to realize what so many already knew, women's sports are the place to be. Not only did viewer ratings soar for the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), women's college basketball championship game and the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League), but we saw the first college softball game on a major national network. The NFL and MLB (Major League Baseball) added more female coaches and front-office executives. In 2022, look for the women's college basketball tournament to use the coveted "March Madness" title for the first time. HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
4. The year brought us athletes who seem to get better with age. Tom Brady won the Super Bowl with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL – National Football League), in February at age 43. (And then celebrated with maybe one too many shots at the championship boat parade). At 46, Helio Castroneves won the Indy 500, and Phil Mickelson showed off his impressive 50-year-old calves on his way to a PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Championship win. AGE-DEFYING
5. The delayed 2020 Summer Olympics gave the world the positivity and excitement we'd all been missing. COVID precautions meant athletes' families had to watch from the comfort of their couches, too, but the stories of athletes like Caeleb Dressel, Suni Lee and Katie Ledecky all brought us to our feet. The US topped the medal count with 113 total medals, 39 gold, including one from the US Men's Basketball Team, who continued their medal streak. WORLD’S GREATEST

If you’re a fan of F1 (Formula One) Racing, then you likely caught the race of the century when Max Verstappen beat out seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 championship. But did you know that Hamilton, the only Black F1 driver, is also a fan of fashion? He purchased a table at the Met Gala, which runs around $275,000, and filled it with three emerging Black designers to grow their reach. SMOOTH MOVE

The 5 Things You Need To Know To Survive College Football Game Season
How to survive college football’s biggest month when the only bowl you care about is a Chipotle burrito bowl.

While you might be in the midst of the holiday shopping season, others are immersed in college football bowl game season.

1. What’s in a name? Well, for bowl games, it’s big money. The committees will do just about anything to please their title sponsors, including naming the game itself something odd. This season, the most memorable bowl game names roll off the tongue like the Cheez-It Bowl, TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, and the inaugural Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. And yes, there used to be a game called the Salad Bowl. HOW LONG UNTIL WE HAVE THE SMOKE-A BOWL?
2. Name, image, likeness (NIL) has changed how college athletes approach bowl games. While according to NCAA rules, athletes cannot accept gifts of more than $550 (like those coveted bowl game swag bags,) they can earn money off of their name, image and likeness. Take, for instance, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Not only are they offering the winning team $10,000 to the charity of their choice if they douse their coach in mayo instead of Gatorade at the end of the game, but they’re offering individual players $5,000 to be a bowl game ambassador. MONEY TO BE MADE
PS: If you’re wondering, unless players play for one of the final four playoff teams, their families are not eligible for travel compensation to games.
3. Not all teams are invited to a bowl game. A team has to have win six games to be considered bowl eligible. The TV exposure, additional revenue, and chance at a title come with a winning price tag. But this year, there’s a temporary extra bowl game, so now 84 teams will get in on the fun that is bowl game season. NO PARTICIPATION TROPHIES HERE
4. The top four teams in the country (in ranking order – Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati) will play each other on New Year’s Eve in either the Orange Bowl in Miami or the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The winner of those two games will play each other in the National Championship Game on Monday, January 10. The other bowl games are for pride and money for the program but will not impact a team’s overall rating. BOWLED OVER
5. One study estimates that college football bowl season carries a $1.44 billion economic impact. According to USA Today, the big six bowl games - the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Peach and Cotton bowls, plus the national championship game, paid out a combined $549 million to conferences and schools in 2018-19. The same documents showed the other bowl games paying out a total of $99 million. MONEY TALKS

'Tis the Season for Skittle-Dispensing Parkas and Audi A7's (For NFL Players, That Is... )

1. Von Miller is known for dishing out heart-stopping hits as one of the longest-tenured defensive players in the NFL (National Football League). But he still has a soft spot for his opponents. Before he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, Miller gifted an autographed bottle of wine, featuring an image of his signature eyewear and a handcrafted thank you note, to every player in the AFC West. (The NFL has two conferences, with one being the American Football Conference). Miller sent out a total of 289 bottles and made sure to include players on practice squads and the injured reserve list. CHEERS
2. Truly a gift from the heart. For years Peyton Manning wrote handwritten notes to athletes and sports figures he admired. He spent his off-season writing to the people on this list, usually after they reached a milestone or retired. He would note the person's respect for the game along with his notes of best wishes. AN INVALUABLE GIFT
3. Quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Trevor Siemian have a sweet spot for their linemen. Flacco, who was a backup QB at the time, bought his linemen $2,000 slushie machines for the holidays one year, because why not? And the New Orleans Saints Siemian loved Skittles, so he purchased custom parkas for his linemen that dispense Skittles. Yes, the fur-trim hooded parkas have a button on the chest that, when pushed, Skittles arrive in a coat pocket. A DREAM COME TRUE
4. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line is a giving group that put a new spin on gift-giving. Instead of exchanging with each other, they pooled their money to give special bonuses for staff members who might get overlooked. These people take care of them every day like the kitchen staff, trainers and the equipment team. THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS
5. The offensive line is the first line of defense for offensive stars like running backs and quarterbacks. So it makes sense that they're gifted accordingly for taking the big hits. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson gave his linemen each $12,000 in Amazon stock when he signed his new four-year/$140 million contract. Dallas Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott gifted his linemen John Deere UTVs; Tom Brady doled out new Audi A7s and Tennessee Titans Derrick Henry, custom Pac-Man arcade games. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

Some NFL team's cheer coaches conduct "jiggle tests" to assess the firmness of the cheerleaders' bodies during the season, and if they don't pass the test, they're benched. During a regular-season many make, on average less than $10/hour. Don't get caught up in the heat of the moment, unlike Kelly Stafford. Kelly Stafford and her QB husband, Matt, are new additions to the LA Rams roster this year. Matt and his team took a beating in last week's Monday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers. During the game, Kelly threw a pretzel at a taunting opposing fan. A neighboring Rams fan called her out on it, and she later apologized for her bad behavior on Instagram. FOOD FIGHT!

The Seattle Seahawks (NFL) have long given love to the 12th man (or woman), the fans, who are loud and provide the Seahawks with serious home field advantage. But they're not the only football team to give love to the 12s. At Texas A&M, the 12th man student section stands the entire game in support of their team. Texas A&M trademarked "12th man," and the Seahawks made a deal to pay the university $140,000 to use the limited rights of the phrase for five years. SMART INVESTMENT

Remember when toilet papering a house was something you did to your worse enemy? Not at Auburn University. After a win, fans toilet paper the oaks on Toomer's Corner on campus. This tradition, which started in 1972, was stopped for three years after an Alabama fan poisoned the trees, but now it's back. As you might expect, a bone-chilling tradition that creates seismic activity starts with Metallica. The Virginia Tech football team takes the field to "Enter Sandman," and the noise from the fans registers as seismic activity. 1. The Green Rovers, a soccer team from Western England, is leading the charge to go green. They claim the title as the only vegan football (i.e., soccer) club in the world. Since 2015, there have been no animal products for sale in the stadium. Some of the players eat non-vegan outside of the stadium (and there are paparazzi photos to prove it), but some have adopted the vegan lifestyle. 3. Pocono Motor Speedway’s (NASCAR - National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) green efforts not only benefit the earth but you. The raceway runs completely on solar power and has sheep for lawn mowers. But they have an industry-specific problem – what to do with as many as 600 used tires after a race? Answer – recycle. The recycled residue from old tires is used in everyday items such as portable speed bumps, the anti-fatigue mat in your kitchen or playgrounds. WHERE THE RUBBER HITS THE ROAD
4. Home field advantage for some sports teams is an urban farm. Fenway Park, one of the oldest stadiums in baseball, was granted its LEED certification. The home of the Boston Red Sox (MLB) also has a rooftop farm that generates 5,900 pounds of produce annually to be used in the stadium. The home of the San Francisco 49ers boasts a 27,000-square foot rooftop farm that generates 500 pounds of produce monthly. BATTING FOR BROCCOLI
5. The Cleveland Indians were the first MLB (Major League Baseball) team to install a wind turbine to power their stadium. Others have since followed. Although the Indians can boast that their stadium is 100 percent powered by renewable energy from wind power. BLOWN AWAY

4. A glass of fine wine and announcer Jim Nantz have something in common. They’re both smooth and are likely to put you to sleep (in a good way in Nantz's case) after consuming for an hour or two. Nantz, the soothing voice of the Masters and NFL on CBS, is behind the Healdsburg, CA winery The Calling. Also known for their time on the golf course and in the wine world are veteran golfers Ernie Els (Ernie Els Wines) and Greg Norman (Greg Norman Estates). 5. LeBron James doesn’t shy away from his admiration for wine (or apparently tequila) and neither do retired NBA players Dwyane Wade and Yao Ming. Ming is one of the tallest ever to play the game and the Shanghai native is fully invested in his St. Helena, CA vineyard. However, Yao Family Wines aren’t your daily drinkers at around $100+ a bottle. Dwyane Wade’s brand, Wade Cellars, resides in Napa Valley. The 5 Things You Need To Know About The 2021 Super Bowl
Here’s how to get your game face on, even if you don’t care about the game on the field.

We have plenty to talk about for those who prefer the commercials and the halftime show over the game when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the defending Super Bowl Champ Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

1. Three familiar brands you won’t see paying $5.5 M for a 30 second Super Bowl commercial this year are Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser. The three big brands join Audi and Avocados from Mexico in skipping the big game advertising altogether. Budweiser is reallocating the media investment to raise vaccine awareness. Pepsi (Mountain Dew and Frito-Lay) and Anheuser-Busch (Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and their seltzers) will still promote other products. As a side note, because of COVID, there will be no viewing parties, and people are hungry for something to watch, so experts expect this Super Bowl to be one of the biggest viewing audiences in history. THE RIGHT MOVE?
2. Two women making history this Sunday are youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman and Referee Sarah Thomas. Gorman will recite an original poem that will honor three pandemic heroes who are the game's honorary captains. It will be the first time a poet participates in the Super Bowl pregame festivities. Thomas will be the first woman to ever officiate at the Super Bowl. JUST THE BEGINNING
3. Let’s talk quarterbacks. There’s quite the age difference between the two starting quarterbacks - Tom Brady, 43, the oldest quarterback in the league and Patrick Mahomes, 25, one of the youngest. Mahomes was six-years-old when Brady played in his first Super Bowl. In fact, Brady is 7 years younger than Mahomes’ professional baseball player father. THAT STINGS A BIT
4. The Bucs will be wearing their white jerseys when they play at home. They reportedly chose the white jerseys because Tom Brady is 4-1 in Super Bowls while wearing white. In 13 of the last 16 Super Bowl games, the winning team was wearing white jerseys. WINTER WHITE
5. Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan will be singing the national anthem and H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.” Be prepared to be blinded by the lights of The Weeknd as he performs at halftime. He spent $7 million of his own money to make the halftime show more “cinematic,” so you’re in for a treat. Spoiler alert: None of the performers are paid for their appearance at the Super Bowl, but the NFL does pay for the production costs (minus the above and beyond that The Weeknd is paying for). The first thing we learned about Abigail is she has a hearing impairment but that didn’t stop the 25-year-old from earning the first impression rose and the first kiss on night one. The small town girl (Beaverton, OR has less than 98k people) loves to be outdoors and is ready to hit the links with Matt, 29. She has plenty of practice as she loves to play golf with her grandparents. CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT HOMETOWN DATE

Front runner Bri’s favorite activity may be brunching (whose isn’t?) but she loves spending time outdoors hitting the beach and hiking. Now Matt may live in Manhattan but even a city boy could use some time outside. Bri also has a tattoo on her rib cage that reads “thirteen” in Farsi so maybe she and Matt can take in an outdoor Taylor Swift concert or two as well? LOVE STORY
Illeana
Illeana is not only an entrepreneur like Matt but she’s also into health and fitness. The former synchronized ice skater made her own nutritional snack called “Funky Munky Energy.” It might be the perfect fireside snack while out on the ice. No word if her cat Sir Theo, who goes to the bathroom in a toilet, is into said nutritional snack though. I THINK WE’RE IMPRESSED?

While Matt will probably not be taking Anna from Chicago out fishing - she’s TERRIFIED of fish - she is an experience junkie. The girl who once convinced a pilot to let her fly a plane over the Minnesota bluffs seems like she would be up for any fitness challenge thrown her way. Will she and Matt paddleboard off into the sunset? TIME WILL TELL
Serena C.
Flight attendant Serena C. finds her happiest place in the closet putting together the perfect outfit but she does love a good chicken wing. (Maybe Super Bowl is her favorite holiday since over 5 billion wings are consumed that day)? Since her feet are never planted firmly on the ground and she's always up for an adventure we could see her being game for physical fitness, provided she has the right attire. WANNA GET AWAY?

The 5 Things You Need To Know About The College Football National Championship Game

Starting off 2021 with the second biggest football event of the year.

1. The College Football National Championship Game is set between the Crimson Tide from Alabama (No. 1) and The Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 3). The game will take place where everyone wants to go in the winter – Miami on Monday, January 11. If necessary (and there’s a good possibility this could happen), the game would be pushed back to January 18. Both teams’ head coaches have had COVID, so all they can hope for is that you can’t get COVID twice. HOLDING OUR BREATH
2. Since it’s all about the Benjamins, a conference will receive $6 million for each team that is selected for the semifinal games. (Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State played in the semifinals). Keep in mind that this money goes to the conferences, not the schools directly, to distribute as they see fit. These were the payouts originally promised, but they could be smaller after a season and playoffs without fans. WHO’S GOING TO PAY THE BILLS?
3. Because why not? There will be friends, family and fans in the stands in Miami. The schools were given 3,750 tickets each and there will be 16,000 fans in attendance. The fans will have a chance to see the newest Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith (wide receiver) from Alabama, as well as Heisman runner-up in ‘Bama quarterback Mac Jones. The Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields was a Heisman finalist in 2019 and is a darn good football player, but he didn’t play enough games to impress the Heisman voters this year. Fields is also battling an undisclosed injury, which is likely his ribs, an injury sustained in the semifinals. IN IT TO WIN IT
4. If you’re keeping score, Alabama has won as recently as 2017 and Ohio State, 2014. Alabama head coach Nick Saban is currently tied with legendary Alabama head coach Bear Bryant with the most Titles at six. If he wins this game, he will break the record. (Anyone remember all the Bear Bryant references in “Sweet Home Alabama?” It makes sense now). LIGHTBULB MOMENT
5. It’s been quite the rollercoaster season for Ohio State. In August, the Big Ten (their conference) cancelled the season, only to reverse the decision later. But they didn’t make it to the championship game without controversy. Ohio State didn’t play the necessary number of games to qualify for their conference championship game, but they got in anyway. (Their last game was cancelled due to COVID, and even if they would’ve played and lost, they still would’ve qualified for the conference championship. Now you know in case it comes up). The 5 Most Memorable Moments Of 2020

2020 - a year unlike any other. Here are the moments to remember, for better or for worse.

1. The year started with a punch to the gut when basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others died in a morning helicopter crash. The shock wave was felt around the world, impacting the greatest of athletes to the everyday person. Their legend lives on through the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation and their work in making sports accessible to all. We hope in 2021 that Orange County (where the Bryant family still calls home) will continue the tradition of “Kobe Bryant Day” on August 24 (8/24 - his two jersey numbers). In a bittersweet moment, the Lakers won their first championship since the Kobe era this year. THE LEGEND LIVES ON
2. 2020 was a tough year for many, but it was a year filled with milestones for women in sports. From the hiring of Kim Ng by the Miami Marlins as the first-ever female general manager in MLB (Major League Baseball) to Callie Brownson of the Cleveland Browns, who became the first woman to coach an NFL (National Football League) position group during a regular-season game. Brownson again made history when she and Jennifer King, Washington Football Team's full-year coaching intern and NFL official Sarah Thomas were part of the first regular-season game in NFL history to have a female coach on both sidelines and a female official. We can’t leave out DC United (MLS - Major League Soccer) hiring Danita Johnson as president of business operations, making her the first Black woman or man to serve as a team president and one of the highest-ranking female club executives in league history. CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP
3. The topic that dominated 2020 and the world of sports, COVID-19. We’ll never forget March 11, the day sports stopped when Rudy Gobert of the NBA (National Basketball Association) tested positive for COVID, and it subsequently spread through the league. The sports world will remember the look of shock and disbelief on Mark Cuban’s face when he received notice courtside that the basketball season had been suspended. There were plenty of unknowns that led to a lack of confidence in any sports proceeding this year but led to playing in a bubble for some leagues and cancelled/rescheduled games in others. This year also brought us brilliant acts of COVID kindness from the sports community, new champions and, of course, resilience. WE SHALL PREVAIL
4. After the unexplained death of George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, Jacob Blake and so many countless others, athletes had had enough. The Milwaukee Bucks (NBA) led the movement that stopped sports in protest of the racial injustice in America. The movement that started in Milwaukee quickly spread across the NBA and the sports world. We saw NASCAR’s (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Bubba Wallace become a household name after a noose was found in his garage at a race track. Wallace is the only Black driver on the professional circuit. The drivers came together and it led to changes, including NASCAR outlawing confederate flags at races. Superstars like LeBron James started “More Than A Vote,” a non-partisan organization to combat systemic, racist voter suppression. Their efforts included rallying sporting facilities to become polling places. While there is still a long way to go, leagues, owners and athletes across sports have listened to their communities. They have pledged millions of dollars to support programs, implement best practices and start a movement that will lead our country in the right direction. BETTER TOGETHER
5. While we were all quarantined, we binged watched a lot of TV. On the heels of the “Tiger King” phenomenon came Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance.” Because we were all at home glued to the TV for any sense of normalcy, the production of the series was moved up by a few months and it was a hit. Sports fans and non-sports fans rejoiced in Jordan’s victories and felt the pain of his perils. Since you haven’t made it until you’re a meme, there were plenty of Jordan memes to go around, like the one about him eating an entire pizza himself - and subsequently coming down with food poisoning. If you haven’t seen the series yet, you’re in for a treat. (Also, where have you been)? FOR THE WIN

The 5 College Mascots You Never Knew You Needed In Your Life
Let’s talk tigers, trees and one that became dinner.

Mascots - the lovable furry friends that inspire fans and their teams. They're exactly what we need to get us through the second half of 2020.

1. Stanford University’s team name is “The Cardinal” (after the color red and yes, it’s singular). They were the Indians until 1972 and they haven’t had an official mascot since then as no one can agree on a winner. You've probably seen a jubilant tree on the sidelines and wondered why someone brought a giant car freshener pine tree to the game? The tree has become the face of the athletic program but it is technically part of the band. SMELL GOOD, PLAY GOOD?
2. Live animals as mascots are not only frowned upon by PETA but also by your wallet. The LSU (Louisiana State) Tiger - Mike the Tiger’s habitat cost $3 million to build, which was raised through private donors. That $3M doesn’t include the new COVID fence that was built to provide an additional four-foot barrier between pedestrians and the seventh Mike the Tiger. Mike’s also not into rallying the fans as the live tiger hasn’t been permitted on the field for games since 2017. WHERE’S CAROL BASKIN WHEN YOU NEED HER?
3. With horns straight out of a cartoon, Texas Longhorns’ Bevo (who is a longhorn) has become as iconic as the athletic program. Let’s hope that the 15th Bevo’s fate turns out better than one of his ancestors, who became dinner for the football team when the school couldn’t afford the upkeep. NO LOVE FOR THE LONGHORN
4. Billy the Goat, the mascot for the Naval Academy, can be traced back to the 1800s. In fact, the goat is one of the oldest mascots in sports. Billy even has its own security detail during the week of the famed Army-Navy football game to prevent it from being kidnapped by Army supporters. DIRTY JOBS
5. The first couple of college mascots, Wilma and Wilber Wildcat, are the mascots for the University of Arizona. Wilma was created when the costume designers were trying to create another costume for Wilber. Oops. They were married November 21st, 1986 before a football game. Her job is primarily women’s volleyball and women’s basketball. The two will be quarantining together this football season since the PAC-12 cancelled the fall football season. THINK THEY’RE PERFECTING THEIR SOURDOUGH BREAD RECIPE?
*Both Stanford and University of Arizona’s mascots will not be seen on the field anytime soon as their conference, the PAC-12 has opted out of the fall football season.

The NFL Is Starting Its Season And We're Here For It
What do whistles, vacuum cleaners and lots of laundry have to do with the season?

We weren’t sure it was going to happen but the NFL (National Football League) is kicking off its season and we’re here for it. Are you ready for some football?

Let’s recap last year for a moment:
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. The biggest move of the off-season was Tom Brady flying south for the season to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
1. If it feels like the season snuck up on you, you’re right. There were no preseason games this year to help combat the spread of COVID. Fans of fantasy football weren’t happy about the absence of the preseason because they didn’t have a chance to scout players for their fantasy teams. Now the season will begin on Thursday night with the Chiefs, and their recently engaged quarterback Patrick Mahomes, taking on J.J. Watt and his Houston Texans. HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS
2. The sidelines will look a little empty as cheerleaders, mascots and sideline reporters will not be allowed on the field. It won't matter that there won't be a mascot to throw out t-shirts, because some stadiums will be empty for games with a handful of teams opting not to have fans present. The lack of fan noise won't be an issue because the NFL has approved for stadiums to use artificial fan noise in-stadium, but have set very strict rules on how loud that can be. The limit is 75 decibels – about the same as a vacuum cleaner. CHEER FROM THE COUCH
3. Just like college football, the referees will have electronic whistles to prevent their spittle from going everywhere like it would with a regular whistle. And you can also bet, just like college football, the NFL equipment managers will be busy making sure everything is sanitized and that includes laundry. One college team reported already doing 2.1 million pounds of laundry before the season even started. That number is significant because they did 3 million pounds of laundry total last season. AT LEAST THEY’LL SMELL GOOD?
4. Unlike may other professional sports, the NFL will not have a “bubble.” The bubble concept is unrealistic for football as teams have massive rosters and more coaches than any of other professional sport. Case in point - teams are limited to only traveling with 70 people including coaches, medical personnel and support staff. (For comparison sake, when the season began, basketball was limited to 37 people including players). No bubble doesn’t mean there aren’t a long list of rules to follow and protocol for anyone testing positive. Interestingly, any player who has tested positive and recovered (or who have tested positive for antibodies) will undergo additional cardiac screening. SAFETY FIRST
5. The Las Vegas Raiders will make their debut in their new home city this season. Their new stadium is pretty cool with a prime view of the iconic Las Vegas Strip. Too bad there will be no fans in the stands to take in the view. VIVA LAS RAIDERS

1. The sport of fantasy football was originally developed in 1962 but modern fantasy football started in 1999 when Yahoo! offered an online league. Now players can create teams using ESPN or other sports apps as well as make some dough with online betting sites like DraftKing and FanDuel, although they are still illegal in a few states. BETTING IT ALL
2. It’s a male dominated “sport,” with men making up over 80% of the 60 million participants. But don’t look now because women are whipping up teams of their own. There are whole leagues and even businesses dedicated to helping the female football fan join in on the fun. YOU GOT THIS
3. Picking a team name is the best part but remember no one is intimidated by the “Glitter Gridiron” team. Luckily for you, there are massive lists of names out there for inspiration. Some of our favorites? Sacks and the City, Game of Throws, Teddy Throwsevelt and Hot Chubb Time Machine (referencing Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns). CLEVER EH?
4. Women only leagues are popular where everyone can enjoy themselves without having to worry about the bro culture (see next). Fantasy football is usually fun but some leagues aren’t for the faint of heart. They take it very seriously and there’s a punishment for coming in last. The penalties include piercings, buying drinks for the entire next football season, doing standup at a local open mic night or waxing of the nether regions (by a professional, of course, because what are we animals)? THAT’S GOING TO LEAVE A MARK
5. Drafts, trades and researching game day opponents are all part of the game, hence why U.S. employers suffer a $17 billion (yes with a 'b') loss in productivity due to fantasy football. (Let’s see what happens with everyone working from home without a boss over their shoulder). It hurts the employee’s pockets too, spending an average of $556 on entry fees, materials and prizes. 1. Playing together on the same team for the first time since college are sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks. The two are more than teammates, they’re advocates for the women who make up the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association). They’re women just like us, students, mothers and businesswomen who happen to dominate on the court. Nneka and Chiney, who are leaders of the league’s players association, led the player negotiations that lead to maternity benefits, higher travel standards and increases to player cash compensation and benefits. 2. Move over Jerry Maguire, Nicole Lynn is here. In this year’s NFL Draft (National Football League), Lynn, 30, became the first black woman to represent a top-five NFL draft pick. Before the draft, she took to the internet to figure out what other women agents have worn and found no inspiration because only two women have ever represented players in the draft previously. The next in line will have Lynn to look up to. TAKE YOUR SEAT AT THE TABLE
3. Becky Hammon is setting the NBA (National Basketball Association) on fire. She’s currently the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs and with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich out, fans are wondering why Hammon isn’t being allowed to step into the head coaching position. The team instead brought in former player Tim Duncan to replace Popovich even though it seems Hammon is doing the work. They might want to watch out because she’s already the first woman ever to interview for an NBA head coaching job and it’s a matter of time until another team hires her to be the boss. SLAM DUNK
4. The NHL (National Hockey League) is walking the walk, living up to their statement that hockey is for everyone. During the Chicago Blackhawks – St. Louis Blues game last year on International Women’s Day, the broadcast and production crew will be made up entirely of women. They’ve also opened up the All-Star NHL skills competition to female hockey players. NOW WE’RE TALKING
5. Soon baseball will no longer be left to the “boys of summer.” Kudos to Justine Siegal who paved the way for so many women when she became the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball (MLB) organization (Oakland Athletics Fall League, 2015). This year, the San Francisco Giants hired Alyssa Nakken as an assistant coach on their big league roster. Both the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees appointed women to their minor league coaching staff. WHO’S ON FIRST

1. Just because they wear uniforms doesn’t mean these athletes aren’t into fashion. (It just takes them less time to get dressed for work than most of us). Led by Megan Rapinoe, four members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team launched a gender-neutral clothing line earlier this year called Re—inc. On the men’s side, Russell Westbrook is known for his sometimes over-the-top postgame press conference looks. He launched Honor The Gift, featuring athleisure-driven clothing as well as high-end athletic wear called Westbrook XO for Barneys. Other proud owners of a fashion-related business are Serena Williams (Serena), Tony Hawk (Birdhouse and Hawk Clothing), Venus Williams (EleVen) and Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7). FASHION MEETS FITNESS
2. These athletes have an appetite for a return on investment. Enter in pizza. Yes, everyone’s favorite dinner is also a hot investment for these NBA players. 3. If sports are your life, why not buy part of a team? Diversifying their assets into an NBA (National Basketball Association) team, Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals bought into the Phoenix Suns and Aaron Rodgers owns a share of the Milwaukee Bucks. It seems like everyone joined Will Ferrell in buying a stake in a soccer team. Kevin Durant, Russell Wilson and Ciara, James Harden, Oscar De La Hoya and David Beckham are all partial owners of an MLS (Major League Soccer) team. LeBron James took it to another level investing $6.5M in Premiere League team, Liverpool FC in 2011. IN IT FOR THE GATORADE
4. Even though they’re used to being in the spotlight on the court, these basketball players are behind the scenes when it comes to movies. Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Steph Curry are all involved in production and entertainment companies that have their hands in movies. You might remember Steph Curry’s most recent work as executive producer of “Jump Shot: The Movie.” (Great movie BTW). ON THE SILVER SCREEN
5. Last year, people watched 6.6 billion hours of esports videos worldwide. Jumping on that trend with their wallets in hand are celebrities from Michael Jordan to Mark Cuban to Alex Rodriguez. These esports teams are so popular that they resemble a race car driver covered in sponsor logos when they play. These players are making a ton of money, with the top three players in the world pulling in $3.16M in prize earnings last year. HOPE IT PAYS DIVIDENDS
