The Lambeau Leap, which started as a spontaneous jump into the crowd by former Green Bay Packers (NFL – National Football League) player Leroy Butler in 1993, has turned into a tradition at Lambeau Field, home of the Packers. Minus during COVID, the scoring player jumps up the wall and into the crowd after almost every touchdown. ALL HANDS ON DECK
SMILE AND WAVE
Iowa Hawkeye fans have started a tradition, the Iowa Wave. When the first quarter ends, fans wave to the patients at Iowa's Stead Family Children's Hospital that overlooks the stadium. MOST IMPORTANT PLAY OF THE GAME

The Seattle Seahawks (NFL) have long given love to the 12th man (or woman), the fans, who are loud and provide the Seahawks with serious home field advantage. But they're not the only football team to give love to the 12s. At Texas A&M, the 12th man student section stands the entire game in support of their team. Texas A&M trademarked "12th man," and the Seahawks made a deal to pay the university $140,000 to use the limited rights of the phrase for five years. SMART INVESTMENT

Remember when toilet papering a house was something you did to your worse enemy? Not at Auburn University. After a win, fans toilet paper the oaks on Toomer's Corner on campus. This tradition, which started in 1972, was stopped for three years after an Alabama fan poisoned the trees, but now it's back. No word if poor college students clean the toilet paper up afterward to stock their bathrooms, especially after COVID. LIKELY ONE-PLY
SEISMIC SANDMAN
As you might expect, a bone-chilling tradition that creates seismic activity starts with Metallica. The Virginia Tech football team takes the field to "Enter Sandman," and the noise from the fans registers as seismic activity. The team considered songs from Guns N' Roses and Alan Parsons Project before settling on Metallica. ROCK ON

A-list celebrities and athletes alike line up to play in the Super Bowl’s “Madden Bowl,” a knock-out tournament that pits celebs against each other in a game of Madden NFL. Well, the former Access Hollywood host Maria Menounos showed them all who was boss. In 2011, she became the first woman ever to win the championship title for the Madden Bowl. TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE
JUSTIN BIEBER
We all know Justin Bieber is Canadian, and just because he’s Canadian doesn’t mean he’s great at hockey, except when he is. In 2012, he was offered an ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) contract with Bakersfield for his great puck handling skills. You might remember back in early 2020 when All-Star NHL (National Hockey League) goalie Jordan Binnington challenged Bieber to a shootout after seeing a video on the pop star’s Instagram. Bieber has also been known to pick up a game or two with a few of his NHL friends. NEVER SAY NEVER

Top 5 Storylines To Follow For The 2021 NFL Season
The country’s most popular sport kicks off this week.

While the men of the NFL (National Football League) are back this week, the women are the big discussion point of this season. (Okay, and you too, COVID).

1. The NFL will have a record 12 women coaches this season, and six are women of color. Included in the 12 are Maral Javadifar and Lori Locust, who were the first women to win Super Bowl as coaches with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The growth of women in the NFL is credited to a few programs that include the "Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship" and the league's annual Women's Careers in Football Forum. The two aim to increase the number of full-time NFL minority coaches. A SEAT AT THE TABLE
2. COVID protocols for unvaccinated and vaccinated players are very different this season. So different that some coaches have had to backtrack on comments that insinuated that they kept vaccinated players over those who were not. If vaccinated players test positive, they can return to the team as soon as 48 hours after testing positive (provided they have two negative tests 24 hours apart). Unvaccinated players must isolate for a minimum of 10 days, even if they're asymptomatic. WHY IS THIS NOT PART OF OUR FANTASY FOOTBALL CONVERSATION?
3. Last year was the first season in 14 seasons that the NFL did not play a game in London. And while it might be tough for you to get to London this fall, the city will be hosting two NFL games in October. The Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets will play on Sunday, October 10, and the Jacksonville Jaguars will take on the Miami Dolphins the following weekend, on October 17. The teams will play at the home of Tottenham Hotspur (soccer). FINGERS CROSSED IT'LL HAPPEN
4. Despite concerns about the toll a season takes on a player's body, money talks. During the off-season, team owners voted to expand the regular season from 16 to 17 games starting this season. This season there will also be a change with how players get paid. Players will receive at least 48% of all league revenue. That figure could increase depending on the upcoming TV negotiations. SHOW ME THE MONEY
5. If you find the idea of the broadcast team talking stats and not strategy or providing interesting insights to the game, now you're in luck. Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks and brothers Peyton and Eli Manning will provide a simulcast of Monday Night Football. Basically, it'll be the two of them sitting around and watching the game. And if you've ever followed them on social media or even Peyton's SNL hosting gig, they're pretty funny. It's two dudes, a football game and a microphone. PASS THE POPCORN

The ESPYs are like the Golden Globes – you get the best of both worlds. It’s the one night of the year where athletes and celebrities gather to celebrate the achievements in the world of sports while giving us the summer red carpet we’ve all been missing.

1. Typically, the awards show takes place on a Wednesday in July after the MLB (Major League Baseball) All-Star Game, referred to as “Black Wednesday,” the one day a year where there are no live sports. This year, with leagues playing COVID adjusted schedules, there is no dark day to hold the event. So that means there will likely be no Olympians, MLB (Major League Baseball) or WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) players or members of the Phoenix Suns or Milwaukee Bucks who are playing in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals in attendance. There’s a chance the Stanley Cup Finals (NHL - National Hockey League) will be over by then, but it’s not a sure bet. ZOOM CALL
2. Just because there will be no Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird sighting on the red carpet, it doesn’t mean you’ll be disappointed. The fashion game will undoubtedly be impressive when Lindsey Vonn, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Russell Wilson and Ciara and LeBron James (likely promoting Space Jam 2) step into the spotlight. 3. Unlike the Oscars, where you’ve never heard of most of the movies, the fans get a say who receives some of the awards like the best athlete in women’s sports, best game and best team. EVERY VOTE COUNTS
4. ESPN can put together a video package that’ll pull at your heartstrings while leaving you inspired, and the awards at the ESPYs are no different. Here’s a quick summary of each of the major awards:
Chris Nikic, the first person with Down syndrome to complete a full IRONMAN triathlon, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
Four-time WNBA champion and two-time Olympic medalist Maya Moore will receive the Arthur Ashe Award Courage Award. She is being recognized for her work to free Jonathan Irons, who she felt was wrongly convicted of a crime. She stepped away from her career to work to free him. (Ultimately, he was released).
Manchester United (European soccer) star Marcus Rashford rallied Parliament during COVID to support children who received free lunch pre-pandemic, securing a $556 million grant to provide meals into 2021. For his work that impacted 1.7 million children, he will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service.
5. Actor Anthony Mackie, known for his many movie roles but especially in the Marvel series, will add ESPY host to his lengthy resume. Mackie is expected to poke fun at some of the best athletes on the planet in his opening monologue, which could be scarier than any script he’s encountered. Unlike most red carpet events, this one will take place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 at the Seaport in New York City. GET YOUR GAME FACE ON

The 5 Things You Need To Know About The 2021 Super Bowl
Here’s how to get your game face on, even if you don’t care about the game on the field.

We have plenty to talk about for those who prefer the commercials and the halftime show over the game when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the defending Super Bowl Champ Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

1. Three familiar brands you won’t see paying $5.5 M for a 30 second Super Bowl commercial this year are Coke, Pepsi and Budweiser. The three big brands join Audi and Avocados from Mexico in skipping the big game advertising altogether. Budweiser is reallocating the media investment to raise vaccine awareness. Pepsi (Mountain Dew and Frito-Lay) and Anheuser-Busch (Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and their seltzers) will still promote other products. As a side note, because of COVID, there will be no viewing parties, and people are hungry for something to watch, so experts expect this Super Bowl to be one of the biggest viewing audiences in history. THE RIGHT MOVE?
2. Two women making history this Sunday are youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman and Referee Sarah Thomas. Gorman will recite an original poem that will honor three pandemic heroes who are the game's honorary captains. It will be the first time a poet participates in the Super Bowl pregame festivities. Thomas will be the first woman to ever officiate at the Super Bowl. JUST THE BEGINNING
3. Let’s talk quarterbacks. There’s quite the age difference between the two starting quarterbacks - Tom Brady, 43, the oldest quarterback in the league and Patrick Mahomes, 25, one of the youngest. Mahomes was six-years-old when Brady played in his first Super Bowl. In fact, Brady is 7 years younger than Mahomes’ professional baseball player father. THAT STINGS A BIT
4. The Bucs will be wearing their white jerseys when they play at home. They reportedly chose the white jerseys because Tom Brady is 4-1 in Super Bowls while wearing white. In 13 of the last 16 Super Bowl games, the winning team was wearing white jerseys. WINTER WHITE
5. Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan will be singing the national anthem and H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.” Be prepared to be blinded by the lights of The Weeknd as he performs at halftime. He spent $7 million of his own money to make the halftime show more “cinematic,” so you’re in for a treat. Spoiler alert: None of the performers are paid for their appearance at the Super Bowl, but the NFL does pay for the production costs (minus the above and beyond that The Weeknd is paying for). 2020 - a year unlike any other. Here are the moments to remember, for better or for worse.

1. The year started with a punch to the gut when basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others died in a morning helicopter crash. The shock wave was felt around the world, impacting the greatest of athletes to the everyday person. Their legend lives on through the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation and their work in making sports accessible to all. We hope in 2021 that Orange County (where the Bryant family still calls home) will continue the tradition of “Kobe Bryant Day” on August 24 (8/24 - his two jersey numbers). In a bittersweet moment, the Lakers won their first championship since the Kobe era this year. THE LEGEND LIVES ON
2. 2020 was a tough year for many, but it was a year filled with milestones for women in sports. From the hiring of Kim Ng by the Miami Marlins as the first-ever female general manager in MLB (Major League Baseball) to Callie Brownson of the Cleveland Browns, who became the first woman to coach an NFL (National Football League) position group during a regular-season game. Brownson again made history when she and Jennifer King, Washington Football Team's full-year coaching intern and NFL official Sarah Thomas were part of the first regular-season game in NFL history to have a female coach on both sidelines and a female official. We can’t leave out DC United (MLS - Major League Soccer) hiring Danita Johnson as president of business operations, making her the first Black woman or man to serve as a team president and one of the highest-ranking female club executives in league history. CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP
3. The topic that dominated 2020 and the world of sports, COVID-19. We’ll never forget March 11, the day sports stopped when Rudy Gobert of the NBA (National Basketball Association) tested positive for COVID, and it subsequently spread through the league. The sports world will remember the look of shock and disbelief on Mark Cuban’s face when he received notice courtside that the basketball season had been suspended. There were plenty of unknowns that led to a lack of confidence in any sports proceeding this year but led to playing in a bubble for some leagues and cancelled/rescheduled games in others. This year also brought us brilliant acts of COVID kindness from the sports community, new champions and, of course, resilience. WE SHALL PREVAIL
4. After the unexplained death of George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, Jacob Blake and so many countless others, athletes had had enough. The Milwaukee Bucks (NBA) led the movement that stopped sports in protest of the racial injustice in America. The movement that started in Milwaukee quickly spread across the NBA and the sports world. We saw NASCAR’s (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Bubba Wallace become a household name after a noose was found in his garage at a race track. Wallace is the only Black driver on the professional circuit. The drivers came together and it led to changes, including NASCAR outlawing confederate flags at races. Superstars like LeBron James started “More Than A Vote,” a non-partisan organization to combat systemic, racist voter suppression. Their efforts included rallying sporting facilities to become polling places. While there is still a long way to go, leagues, owners and athletes across sports have listened to their communities. They have pledged millions of dollars to support programs, implement best practices and start a movement that will lead our country in the right direction. BETTER TOGETHER
5. While we were all quarantined, we binged watched a lot of TV. On the heels of the “Tiger King” phenomenon came Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance.” Because we were all at home glued to the TV for any sense of normalcy, the production of the series was moved up by a few months and it was a hit. Sports fans and non-sports fans rejoiced in Jordan’s victories and felt the pain of his perils. Since you haven’t made it until you’re a meme, there were plenty of Jordan memes to go around, like the one about him eating an entire pizza himself - and subsequently coming down with food poisoning. If you haven’t seen the series yet, you’re in for a treat. (Also, where have you been)? FOR THE WIN

There are so many moments to make you smile like the time he had a tea party with one Make-A-Wish visitor, while decked out in his full wrestling regalia. 2. Love him or hate him, LeBron James (NBA -National Basketball Association) has left the community better than he found it. His big project is the I Promise School in Akron, OH. The school serves nearly 300 at-risk third and fourth graders. In the first year, the year-round school has seen growth among the 90% of students – who started the school year at least one year behind grade level – met or exceeded their expected growth in math and reading. He recently purchased an old restaurant to turn into a multi-purpose facility for the I PROMISE families. CHANGING THE FUTURE
3. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Minnesota Vikings receiver Adam Thielen and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff are among the NFL (National Football Association) players donating Christmas trees to their local communities. Through a partnership with Lowe’s they will be donating over 13,000 trees to homes and facilities like first responder stations, nonprofit housing organizations and youth centers. DELIVERING HAPPINESS
4. No act goes unnoticed and Virginia’s head men’s basketball coach made a selfless choice that will benefit so many others. After winning the first-ever national championship for the school, coach Tony Bennett recently turned down a raise. In an unprecedented move, he asked that the money be given to his assistant coaches and the school. He also pledged $500,000 toward a career development program for current and former UVA basketball players. GOOD GUY
5. International soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his cover model looks, supreme soccer skills and the big payday those bring in. While he’s not afraid to write a significant check, he’s also been known to roll up his sleeves, literally, as a frequent blood donor. The father of four has made a huge impact on his young fans all over the world. In one instance, he invited a Syrian orphan, who lost both his parents in the war, to a game and spent time with him. He has also paid for numerous children’s lifesaving medical treatments. His signature move is auctioning off coveted trophies he’s been awarded with the proceeds going to charity. Instead of exchanging with each other, they pooled their money in order to give special bonuses for staff members who might get overlooked. 4. Gifts with wheels are very popular. Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott gave his linemen John Deere UTVs and Tom Brady gifted his linemen new Audi A7s. Hall of Fame running back (and Dancing with the Stars winner) Emmitt Smith left a key to a new Hummer in each of his linemen's lockers. Smith had his teammates jumping up and down like little kids. 5. New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley feels the way so many of us do about gift-giving. Barkley admitted to NJ Advance Media, “I’m not really good with gifts. I gave them an option. I gave those guys a limit, I’m not going to tell you what the limit is, but I told them ‘just let me know what you guys want, and I’ll get it,’ and I told some of them that if they wanted me to donate towards a foundation or a charity of their choice, I’d do that, too.” CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

Holiday love stories are bringing home the bacon for the Hallmark Channel and Netflix this holiday season, so it’s only a matter of time before ESPN jumps on board.

1. Timing is everything. A few divorces and a handful of years couldn’t keep these two star-crossed lovers apart. Jennifer Lopez and former MLB (Major League Baseball) player and broadcaster Alex Rodriguez had been friends for years. They dated, married and divorced other people and then they were both single. Then there was the text that changed everything. ARod was nervous during a dinner together so he excused himself and went to the bathroom to readjust his thoughts. Then and there he sent his dinner date JLo a text that said “You look sexy AF” and the rest is history. WHY HAS HALLMARK NOT MADE THIS MOVIE?
2. We’ve all heard it before, a girl falls in love with a bad boy and then the bad boy breaks the girl’s heart. That and one bad pickup line bring us to our next couple. After a very public relationship with golfer Tiger Woods, skier Lindsey Vonn was introduced to NHL (National Hockey League) player P.K. Subban at the ESPYs. It was at that event that he told a reporter "It's hotter outside than Lindsey Vonn looks today, which is pretty hot." Well, the line worked. The two, who started dating in 2018 and were engaged in the summer of 2019. The wedding is on hold thanks to COVID. The couple’s passion for each other and their charitable efforts are something to admire. HEART EMOJI
3. Do you know that plotline where two members of royalty happen to run into each other at a coffee shop? This is the same but different. Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe are the unofficial first couple of women’s sports. The two have been dating since meeting at the 2016 Summer Olympics and are a fixture in the Seattle sports scene. They’ve been featured on the cover of InStyle Magazine and were the first same-sex couple to grace the cover of ESPN’s Body Issue. The outspoken and seriously fashionable duo seem to have it all including a plethora of championships and safety deposit boxes for all their gold medals. The two, who were engaged in 2020, also have each other’s backs. During the Women’s World Cup, Bird, who plays for the Seattle Storm (WNBA - Women’s National Basketball Association), came to Rapinoe’s defense in her battle with President Trump, penning an essay titled “So the President F—ing Hates My Girlfriend.” ROM-COM WRITTEN ALL OVER IT

It used to be a tradition for the two winners of Wimbledon to dance with each other at the Wimbledon Champions’ Ball. But as luck would have it, that was the year they decided to cancel the dance due to “lukewarm receptions from modern players.” It all worked out in the end as the two married in 2001 and are still together. The Philadelphia Eagles tight end (NFL - National Football League) and the soccer star met at a Stanford baseball game in 2012 when he offered her sunflower seeds. They had their first date at Chipotle and the rest is history. Married since 2017, together they too have bared it all for ESPN’s Body Issue. With both of them being at the pinnacles of their careers, they live the saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” They say they’re lucky to have three months a year in the same city. 2. Former race car driver and Bachelorette alum turned Bachelor Arie Luyendyk, may go down in history as the least favorite bachelor. He proposed to one contestant (Becca) and then had buyer’s remorse before the finale actually aired and wanted to be with the other (Lauren). Now he and Lauren are married and have an eight-month old daughter. SADLY HER NAME ISN’T ROSE
3. Former professional snowboarder Jessie Csincak may have been chosen as “the one” on DeAnna Pappas’ season but sadly it didn’t work out for the two. Although he did find love, marrying Ann Lueders, who was on Jason Mesnick's season of “The Bachelor.” He continued to further his five minutes of fame by hosting a net series called “Bachelorette Beatdown with Jesse Csincsak.” MAXIMIZE THE OPPORTUNITY
4. Jordan Rodgers has lived his life in the shadow of his brother, Green Bay Packers (NFL) quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Jordan “won” the show and is getting ready to walk down the aisle with the bachelorette JoJo Fletcher in 2021. The two brothers do not have a good relationship, as Jordan calls out occasionally on his social media. Jordan, a former quarterback, is currently holding down a job as an SEC (a college sports conference) Saturday Sports Commentator. SIBLING RIVALRY
5. Who could forget Colton Underwood’s infamous fence jump? When his lady love Cassie quit the show, the former football player put his skills to the test, hurdling the compound fence in Portugal where cameras and everyone’s wingman, Chris Harrison, chased him through the dark. The NFL Is Starting Its Season And We're Here For It
What do whistles, vacuum cleaners and lots of laundry have to do with the season?

We weren’t sure it was going to happen but the NFL (National Football League) is kicking off its season and we’re here for it. Are you ready for some football?

Let’s recap last year for a moment:
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. The biggest move of the off-season was Tom Brady flying south for the season to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
1. If it feels like the season snuck up on you, you’re right. There were no preseason games this year to help combat the spread of COVID. Fans of fantasy football weren’t happy about the absence of the preseason because they didn’t have a chance to scout players for their fantasy teams. Now the season will begin on Thursday night with the Chiefs, and their recently engaged quarterback Patrick Mahomes, taking on J.J. Watt and his Houston Texans. HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS
2. The sidelines will look a little empty as cheerleaders, mascots and sideline reporters will not be allowed on the field. It won't matter that there won't be a mascot to throw out t-shirts, because some stadiums will be empty for games with a handful of teams opting not to have fans present. The lack of fan noise won't be an issue because the NFL has approved for stadiums to use artificial fan noise in-stadium, but have set very strict rules on how loud that can be. The limit is 75 decibels – about the same as a vacuum cleaner. CHEER FROM THE COUCH
3. Just like college football, the referees will have electronic whistles to prevent their spittle from going everywhere like it would with a regular whistle. And you can also bet, just like college football, the NFL equipment managers will be busy making sure everything is sanitized and that includes laundry. One college team reported already doing 2.1 million pounds of laundry before the season even started. That number is significant because they did 3 million pounds of laundry total last season. AT LEAST THEY’LL SMELL GOOD?
4. Unlike may other professional sports, the NFL will not have a “bubble.” The bubble concept is unrealistic for football as teams have massive rosters and more coaches than any of other professional sport. Case in point - teams are limited to only traveling with 70 people including coaches, medical personnel and support staff. (For comparison sake, when the season began, basketball was limited to 37 people including players). No bubble doesn’t mean there aren’t a long list of rules to follow and protocol for anyone testing positive. Interestingly, any player who has tested positive and recovered (or who have tested positive for antibodies) will undergo additional cardiac screening. SAFETY FIRST
5. The Las Vegas Raiders will make their debut in their new home city this season. Their new stadium is pretty cool with a prime view of the iconic Las Vegas Strip. Too bad there will be no fans in the stands to take in the view. VIVA LAS RAIDERS

1. The sport of fantasy football was originally developed in 1962 but modern fantasy football started in 1999 when Yahoo! offered an online league. Now players can create teams using ESPN or other sports apps as well as make some dough with online betting sites like DraftKing and FanDuel, although they are still illegal in a few states. BETTING IT ALL
2. It’s a male dominated “sport,” with men making up over 80% of the 60 million participants. But don’t look now because women are whipping up teams of their own. There are whole leagues and even businesses dedicated to helping the female football fan join in on the fun. YOU GOT THIS
3. Picking a team name is the best part but remember no one is intimidated by the “Glitter Gridiron” team. Luckily for you, there are massive lists of names out there for inspiration. Some of our favorites? Sacks and the City, Game of Throws, Teddy Throwsevelt and Hot Chubb Time Machine (referencing Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns). CLEVER EH?
4. Women only leagues are popular where everyone can enjoy themselves without having to worry about the bro culture (see next). Fantasy football is usually fun but some leagues aren’t for the faint of heart. They take it very seriously and there’s a punishment for coming in last. The penalties include piercings, buying drinks for the entire next football season, doing standup at a local open mic night or waxing of the nether regions (by a professional, of course, because what are we animals)? THAT’S GOING TO LEAVE A MARK
5. Drafts, trades and researching game day opponents are all part of the game, hence why U.S. employers suffer a $17 billion (yes with a 'b') loss in productivity due to fantasy football. (Let’s see what happens with everyone working from home without a boss over their shoulder). It hurts the employee’s pockets too, spending an average of $556 on entry fees, materials and prizes. 1. Playing together on the same team for the first time since college are sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks. The two are more than teammates, they’re advocates for the women who make up the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association). They’re women just like us, students, mothers and businesswomen who happen to dominate on the court. Nneka and Chiney, who are leaders of the league’s players association, led the player negotiations that lead to maternity benefits, higher travel standards and increases to player cash compensation and benefits. 2. Move over Jerry Maguire, Nicole Lynn is here. In this year’s NFL Draft (National Football League), Lynn, 30, became the first black woman to represent a top-five NFL draft pick. Before the draft, she took to the internet to figure out what other women agents have worn and found no inspiration because only two women have ever represented players in the draft previously. The next in line will have Lynn to look up to. TAKE YOUR SEAT AT THE TABLE
3. Becky Hammon is setting the NBA (National Basketball Association) on fire. She’s currently the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs and with Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich out, fans are wondering why Hammon isn’t being allowed to step into the head coaching position. The team instead brought in former player Tim Duncan to replace Popovich even though it seems Hammon is doing the work. They might want to watch out because she’s already the first woman ever to interview for an NBA head coaching job and it’s a matter of time until another team hires her to be the boss. SLAM DUNK
4. The NHL (National Hockey League) is walking the walk, living up to their statement that hockey is for everyone. During the Chicago Blackhawks – St. Louis Blues game last year on International Women’s Day, the broadcast and production crew will be made up entirely of women. They’ve also opened up the All-Star NHL skills competition to female hockey players. NOW WE’RE TALKING
5. Soon baseball will no longer be left to the “boys of summer.” Kudos to Justine Siegal who paved the way for so many women when she became the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball (MLB) organization (Oakland Athletics Fall League, 2015). This year, the San Francisco Giants hired Alyssa Nakken as an assistant coach on their big league roster. Both the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees appointed women to their minor league coaching staff. WHO’S ON FIRST

5 Things You Need To Know About An Unprecedented MLB Season

Major League Baseball is the first of the four major professional sports to return to play. Who knows what might happen a month from now (or heck tomorrow) but here are the important things you need to know about the return to the field for the boys of summer.

The Washington Nationals won their first World Series and everyone in sports still hates the Houston Astros for stealing signs. And no, we’re not talking about billboards.
1. The biggest talk of this season is obviously COVID but unlike many other professional sports, MLB (Major League Baseball) isn’t requiring their players to live in a “bubble.” They will be playing 60 games instead of 162 games and only playing regional games. Then there’s the Toronto Blue Jays who aren’t allowed to play at home per the Canadian Government, because the government didn’t want players coming back and forth into the country from the COVID hotspot that is the U.S. HOWDY NEIGHBOR
2. There may be no bubble but that doesn’t mean there aren’t A LOT of safety rules to follow. Some include no spitting (um have you ever watched a game? They all spit), no brawls, no showers and no licking fingers (this is something most pitchers do). Because of social distancing rules, games will start with some players sitting in the stands instead of the dugout. CHEER SQUAD
3. Since there will be no fans at the games, the league has found an interesting way to fill the silence. Fans can boo or cheer on their team via the MLB app and ballpark staff will adjust the sound accordingly in the stadium for the live game. Unlike attending a game in person, fans can boo their rival team from the bathroom. FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME
4. Filling the stands with compliant, well behaved fans has never been so easy. A handful of teams are selling personalized cardboard cutouts that will be placed in the stands during home games. Some have taken it to another level by benefitting a charity with each sale and others will send you the ball if it hits your cutout. WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT?
5. The first game of the season will be on Thursday, July 23 when the Washington Nationals take on the New York Yankees. Tune in early to see Dr. Anthony Fauci throw out the first pitch for his beloved Nats and stay for the highly anticipated pitcher’s duel between the two teams. STRIKE OUT COVID

They might be invincible on the field, but not in the eyes of the law.

1. During his career, Chicago Bears (NFL – National Football League) wide receiver Sam Hurd was the head of a high-level, drug dealing operation and it appeared he thought he was invincible. How so? Long before he was arrested, one of his associates was pulled over with $88,000 in cash while driving Hurd’s car. Hurd had the guts to ask for the money back. He knew the cops were onto him but he refused to believe that cell phones that came from Mexico could be wiretapped. Needless to say he’s serving out a 15-year sentence in Texas. NEW PHONE WHO DIS?
2. Currently serving out his 25-year sentence in a Moroccan prison is former UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fighter Lee “Lightning” Murray. He was charged with being the mastermind in the largest bank heist in history - $100M. While the plan was flawlessly executed – the robbery took place without any injuries or even a bullet being fired – they weren’t so smart afterward where flubs like abandoned guns and cars and snitches were prevalent. Don’t think this half-Moroccan citizen has let the downtime go to waste, he tried to escape using tiny saws that were snuck in inside of biscuits. WHERE THERE’S A WILL
3. We’ve all stepped out of the house in our favorite outfit only to get something on it. The same happened to former NFL player Ray Lewis at a post-Super Bowl party. He and some friends got into a fight that left two people dead. Lewis was a suspect because had blood on his suit and in his limo. The cream-colored suit became the storyline of the trial. Lewis said his suit was too nice to have committed murder but the suit disappeared not long after the crime and is still M.I.A. today. No one was charged with the murder and Lewis ended up going to jail for obstruction of justice because he instructed his friends to not speak of the incident. SNITCHES GET STITCHES
4. We all know the story of former NFL player O.J. Simpson and his trial for the 1994 murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. From the white Bronco freeway chase, to the black leather glove that didn’t fit the story blazed across the headlines. While he was acquitted in that trial, exactly 13 years to the day of when he was famously acquitted, he wasn’t so lucky. He was sentenced to prison for kidnapping and robbery after he tried to take back his memorabilia. He served nine years in prison and was released last year. 5. Lenny Dykstra went from the top of the world as World Series winner with the New York Mets (MLB - Major League Baseball) in 1986 to prison. Long story short, post-baseball he claimed to have a 100% hit rate at picking winning stocks and convinced people to jump on board his bandwagon, including the money man himself - Jim Cramer. Then he failed at starting a magazine, meanwhile pissing a lot of people off. Eventually he filed for bankruptcy, owing an obscene amount of money to creditors. Life finally caught up with him when he was arrested and served time in prison for bankruptcy fraud. He hid a bunch of assets during his bankruptcy filing and decided to sell them afterward for cash. Shocking, he got caught. THEY KNOW EVERYTHING

Athletes make millions for their time spent on the field, but it’s how they parlay that into side hustles that ensures them a comfortable retirement.

1. Just because they wear uniforms doesn’t mean these athletes aren’t into fashion. (It just takes them less time to get dressed for work than most of us). Led by Megan Rapinoe, four members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team launched a gender-neutral clothing line earlier this year called Re—inc. On the men’s side, Russell Westbrook is known for his sometimes over-the-top postgame press conference looks. He launched Honor The Gift, featuring athleisure-driven clothing as well as high-end athletic wear called Westbrook XO for Barneys. Other proud owners of a fashion-related business are Serena Williams (Serena), Tony Hawk (Birdhouse and Hawk Clothing), Venus Williams (EleVen) and Cristiano Ronaldo (CR7). FASHION MEETS FITNESS
2. These athletes have an appetite for a return on investment. Enter in pizza. Yes, everyone’s favorite dinner is also a hot investment for these NBA players. 3. If sports are your life, why not buy part of a team? Diversifying their assets into an NBA (National Basketball Association) team, Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals bought into the Phoenix Suns and Aaron Rodgers owns a share of the Milwaukee Bucks. It seems like everyone joined Will Ferrell in buying a stake in a soccer team. Kevin Durant, Russell Wilson and Ciara, James Harden, Oscar De La Hoya and David Beckham are all partial owners of an MLS (Major League Soccer) team. LeBron James took it to another level investing $6.5M in Premiere League team, Liverpool FC in 2011. IN IT FOR THE GATORADE
4. Even though they’re used to being in the spotlight on the court, these basketball players are behind the scenes when it comes to movies. Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, LeBron James and Steph Curry are all involved in production and entertainment companies that have their hands in movies. 5. Last year, people watched 6.6 billion hours of esports videos worldwide. Jumping on that trend with their wallets in hand are celebrities from Michael Jordan to Mark Cuban to Alex Rodriguez. These esports teams are so popular that they resemble a race car driver covered in sponsor logos when they play. These players are making a ton of money, with the top three players in the world pulling in $3.16M in prize earnings last year. HOPE IT PAYS DIVIDENDS

3. Her dad, 16-time champion and two-time Hall of Famer Rick Flair, is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and his daughter Charlotte Flair is living up to his legacy. The college volleyball player turned WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) star has been a trailblazer for women in WWE, with nearly a dozen championships to her name. “The Queen” was also the first WWE star to grace the pages of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. NASCAR’s (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) dynamic duo was Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. In 2001, Papa Earnhardt died from injuries sustained in a crash at the Daytona 500 at the age of 49. His namesake, Earnhardt Jr. won that same race three years later. Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather was also a NASCAR driver and his nephew races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. ONE FAST FAMILY
5. Basketball greatness runs in the family for Steph Curry, a three-time NBA (National Basketball Association) Champion and two-time league MVP. His father Dell, is the all-time leader in points and three pointers for the Charlotte Hornets. Steph’s youngest brother Seth plays basketball for the Dallas Mavericks. 1. The economic impact of COVID has states across the country reeling from a lack of tax revenue. One solution many states are looking at is fast tracking legal sports betting. The Supreme Court struck down a federal law in 2018 that restricted sports gambling on a state level (with the exception of Nevada that already had legal sports betting). Since then, a handful of states have opened for betting and have achieved a notable revenue boost. HERE’S WHERE YOUR STATE STANDS
2. Despite other states being able to participate in sports betting, Nevada had a record setting year in 2019. The state saw a total of $5.32 billion placed in bets and a record $329 million in revenue, which produced $22.2 million in state tax revenue. Now this won’t replace all of the tax revenues lost, but many states are looking at it as an option because some tax revenue is better than nothing. SEEKING A SOLUTION
3. Now let’s talk a little more about betting to give you some context. The commissioners of the four major sports (baseball, basketball, football and hockey) have met to discuss integrating their leagues with sports betting entities. We've seen some movement on this but concerns over fixing games and gambling addiction are some of the reasons this isn’t an easy decision. NOT A SIMPLE SOLUTION
4. You’ve probably heard of online sites FanDuel or DraftKings. Where they differ from a casino is that those platforms provide you with an opportunity to wager money on a player’s performance in a game instead of the outcome of the game. This is similar to how you would win if you had a fantasy football team. CLEAR AS MUD?
5. The two most popular sporting events to bet on are the Super Bowl and College Basketball’s March Madness tournament. The Super Bowl went on as planned this year with over $6.8 billion wagered on the big game, but March Madness was cancelled. Twice the number of people bet on March Madness compared to the Super Bowl. Last year, Americans wagered $8.5 billion on the tournament and a big chunk of that was bet illegally through activities like office pools or via a bookie. DON’T TELL THE LEGAL DEPT.

3. Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL - National Hockey League) has so many ‘traditions’ that we can’t list them all. Some include wearing the same jock strap for years and not calling or seeing his mom or his sister on gameday because every time he does, he ends up with an injury. PHONE HOME
