North Carolina State has been on an incredible run through the college baseball postseason. Until now. They were 2-0 in the College Baseball World Series, looking to advance to the championship if they could get one win in two games against Vanderbilt.

Then COVID-19 struck the team Friday morning, causing them to play with only 13 players (there are nine positions on the field). Losing shorthanded to Vanderbilt on Friday, the Wolfpack were ready to come back Saturday with a chance to reach the finals. At 2:15 am EST early Saturday morning, the NCAA released a statement declaring the NC State would have to forfeit Saturday due to COVID, and Vanderbilt would advance.

Due to privacy, we don’t know who tested positive, but four players who were vaccinated were amongst the group that tested positive. Despite there being no mask or testing mandate for the 20,000+ fans in the stadium, the NC State baseball team’s season has ended.
