Weekend Preview: Austin Overload, “My Girl” Good Luck + The Mascot Matchup - Bulldog Vs. Steer

It’s October 18th, and we’re diving into an action-packed weekend in the world of sports. From WNBA playoffs to MLB Championship Series and the thrill of college football and F1 racing, there’s plenty to keep your weekend exciting. Let’s break it down!

WNBA Finals Heat Up

The WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) Finals are heating up, with the New York Liberty taking a 2-1 series lead against the Minnesota Lynx. Heading into tonight’s Game 4, the Liberty are just one victory away from securing their first franchise championship. Lynx fans eagerly hope for a win to see their team perform their signature electric slide dance after every home win.

MLB Championship Series On the Brink

In Major League Baseball, we’re neck-deep in the Championship Series, with the New York Yankees facing the Cleveland Guardians and the New York Mets squaring off against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The teams that come out on top will secure their spots in the World Series. But there’s a fun twist tonight! The Temptations are set to perform the national anthem before the Mets game, and they’ll break into their classic hit “My Girl”—the walkout song of Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor.

And in a quirky move, Mets star Pete Alonso is bringing his good luck charm—a pumpkin he picked up while visiting a Wisconsin farm—on the road with him. He’s not taking any chances against the Dodgers!

College Football Showdowns

College football promises to deliver epic matchups this weekend, particularly the highly anticipated clash between No. 1 Texas and No. 5 Georgia. A unique aspect of this game is the live mascot rivalry between Uga the Bulldog for Georgia and Bevo the Longhorn for Texas. These two mascots have a history, including an intense moment in 2019 when Bevo attempted to charge Uga on live TV. Fortunately, the new Uga (the Uga from 2019 has since passed away) will not face Bevo in that capacity.

F1 Racing in Austin

As if that weren’t enough, the F1 (Formula One) race- Circuit of the Americas- is also taking place in Austin this weekend. Austin hosted the first F1 race in the US before Miami and Vegas joined the lineup. Max Verstappen of Red Bull has a significant lead in the standings, and the record attendance set in 2022 is expected to be broken this year, thanks to the football game happening in town.

Unfortunately, fan-favorite Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo, known for his charming entrance via horse, has been relieved of his driving duties. He was set to receive the keys to the city of Austin.

NFL Matchup: Chiefs vs. 49ers

Last but not least, the NFL (National Football League) is bringing us a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl this weekend when the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers face off. The Chiefs, off to a 5-0 start, are looking to maintain their momentum under head coach Andy Reid, who has the highest winning percentage following a bye week in NFL history. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes is having one of the slowest starts of his career, while Brock Purdy of the 49ers is enjoying a solid season, boasting better stats than Mahomes in passing yards, quarterback rating and touchdowns.

As we gear up for an incredible weekend of sports, don’t forget to check your fantasy football lineups, as multiple teams are on bye weeks.
