NFL (National Football League)
On Friday afternoon, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did something that shocked everyone. He apologized. The day before, a video was released of the NFL’s biggest stars standing up to racism titled “I am George Floyd.” The video, which was the work of players and a rogue NFL employee, forced the league into the spotlight. Goodell then responded with an apology saying "We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all players to speak out and peacefully protest.” They also pledged an additional $20 million to programs and initiatives to address systemic racism. SPEAK OUT, SPEAK UP
Overtime
NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) may not be your favorite sport but they made a major statement on Sunday. In an effort to address the racism and inequality happening in our country, the NASCAR president addressed the teams, drivers and the fans asking them “to listen, to understand and to stand against racism and racial injustice” and that “we must do better as a sport.” The statement was followed up by a powerful video from the sport’s top drivers furthering the same message. This is a step in the right direction for a sport whose fans have been known to bring confederate flags to races. This stand against racism started earlier in the year when driver Kyle Larson was fired for using a racial slur during a live virtual iRacing event. BE AN AGENT OF CHANGE

Amanda Nunes made UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) history on Saturday night, defending her belt in a second weight class. (Weight class is the category in which fighters fight in. Instead of age or height, etc. they use weight, just like boxing). Nunes then announced that she’s taking a break as she’s expecting a baby with wife and fellow UFC fighter Nina Ansaroff. Another fighter who had a big announcement was Conor McGregor, who announced his retirement for the third time in four years. THIRD TIME’S A CHARM?
Coaches’ corner
Iowa Hawkeyes strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle has been placed on administrative leave after a handful of former players spoke out about how they were treated at Iowa and specifically by Doyle. Doyle is the highest paid strength and conditioning coach in college football with an $800,000 salary. Head coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement that this was a "defining moment for the Iowa program." A new advisory committee, chaired by a former player, will be put together to exam the culture of the program and set a new path forward. DON’T BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU
