Women's World Cup
Despite their distaste for their coach and the soccer federation, Spain won its first-ever Women's World Cup defeating England 1-0. Olga Carmona was the hero scoring the match's only goal, but tragedy struck as she learned shortly after the game that her father had passed away. Reports say Carmona's father is understood to have died on Friday, but it was kept from her. Carmona's Instagram post confirms the news was withheld from her ahead of Sunday's game.
Another story to note, during the World Cup's traditional on-field medal ceremony, Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales kissed midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips.
MLS (Major League Soccer)
Lionel Messi has dominated the league in his first month in the MLS. His Inter Miami FC team won the League's Cup this weekend, beating Nashville. Reese Witherspoon, co-owner of Nashville SC, and Nicole Kidman were on hand to join Miami's owners, Victoria and David Beckham.
A fun fast - none of the Messi-fueled victories have helped Miami in the actual standing as they sit in last place. The Leagues Cup is a tournament put on by the confederation (Concacaf) and features the 29 MLS clubs and 18 Liga MX teams in a World Cup-style tournament. But in all fairness, it's a step in the right direction.
Before we go
In tennis, 19-year-old Coco Gauff is holding her own, becoming the youngest player to win the Cincinnati tournament. It's her third title of the year.
In the news of things we wish we could do now, let alone at 71. Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was caught on camera throwing an impressive touchdown pass during practice which had fans like Snoop Dogg and Will Ferrell commenting, saying he's making his young player vying for a job look bad.
