Full steam ahead to the weekend with the sports small talk you need to know.
Women's World Cup
The weekend's big story is the Women's World Cup Final game between Spain and England. Neither country has won a World Cup title, and England's top player Lauren James returns from her two-game suspension to break that streak for her team. Spain's team has an interesting story going into the game – the players have outwardly expressed disdain for their coach. Either way, Americans will have to get up early, with the game starting at 6 am ET.
Meanwhile, US Soccer women's head coach Vlatko Andonovski resigned yesterday after a disappointing World Cup finish.
Little League World Series
It's time for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, which began Wednesday and runs through August 27. Big league teams are showing up for these kids and their families. The Las Vegas Raiders (NFL – National Football League), Vegas Golden Knights (NHL – National Hockey League), and the Oakland A's (the MLB – Major League Baseball) team is soon relocating to Vegas) all pitched in a total of $45,000 to help their hometown team, the Henderson Little League Team, live out their dreams.
The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals will play a regular season game in Williamsport on Sunday.
Before you go
Taylor Swift declined the NFL's Super Bowl halftime show offer for the second time.
The NBA (NBA - National Basketball Association) released its schedule yesterday. The Brooklyn Nets showcased their schedule by asking ordinary people to identify NBA logos. The video results are hilarious.
The Los Angeles Rams and the Las Vegas Raiders (NFL) are upping their efforts this weekend during their preseason matchup to support Maui fire relief and recovery efforts. Both will sell merchandise with net proceeds benefitting the cause. The Raiders will sell shirts highlighting the nickname for Vegas as Hawaii's ninth island.
That's what you need to know for the weekend.
