Weekend sports talk that doesn’t make you roll your eyes—just how we like it.
No Fairy Tales Here 👋✨
The men’s Sweet 16 is literally serving big brands and power moves. For the first time since 1985, not a single Cinderella team made the cut. As Yahoo Sports points out, only three Sweet 16 teams (Duke, which won last night, Michigan State and Purdue) have more than three starters who began their careers at their current school.
BYU—aka home of the Tater Tot heir—was bounced by Alabama after they dropped a casual 25 three-pointers and racked up 113 points.
The women’s Sweet 16 starts today. Sadly, USC star Juju Watkins is out with an ACL injury, but the Trojans are still alive…for now. Keep an eye on the women’s side—it’s full of drama, rivalries, and oh yes, Duke vs. UNC.
The men's and women’s tournaments will finish the Sweet 16 this weekend and head into the Elite 8, with the men’s side starting on Saturday and the women’s on Sunday.
⚾ MLB Opening Day…Kind Of
Baseball came out swinging yesterday with 28 teams in action, but many fans were left in the dark—literally. MLB.tv glitched hard around 4 p.m. ET, which meant thousands of Opening Day viewers couldn’t stream their games. Welcome to 2024, where the hot dogs are overpriced and the apps are overwhelmed.
Looking for the popcorn-worthy scoop? This week’s MLB Season Preview podcast covered all the must-know stuff. From garlic fries to game-shortening rules and a 98-ounce bat full of popcorn, it’s everything you didn’t know you needed.
🏈 UFL: Football’s “Other” Opening Weekend
The United Football League (UFL) kicks off its second season this weekend. Quick refresher: It’s the result of the XFL (the Rock’s baby) and USFL joining forces. The Birmingham Stallions are the defending champs—if there’s a season.
Currently, no labor agreement exists, and players haven’t ruled out a strike. What happens if they walk out? FOX says it’ll run “The Masked Singer” reruns and Gordon Ramsay yelling at someone about raw chicken. So… either way, there will be entertainment.
🎬 Duke vs. White Lotus
Duke University is not thrilled with how it’s portrayed in this season of White Lotus. One of the show’s most unlikable characters (and that’s saying something) is a shady businessman with deep Duke ties. The school told The New York Times the character “does not reflect who we are.” Feels like the best promo the show could’ve asked for.
