Good morning! It’s Monday, August 5th, and we’re covering all things Olympics as we wrap up the last full week of the Games.
A Historic Race and a Star-Studded Concert Pause
In a race so significant that Adele paused her concert, Sha'Carri Richardson earned a silver medal in her first 100-meter final, while Julian Alfred from St. Lucia won the gold—the first in St. Lucia's history. Pre-race warmup disruptions affected both Richardson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who did not run in her final Olympics. The two were not allowed to enter the training area where they previously entered to warm up since they weren’t staying at the Olympic Village - a sudden rule change that caused them to enter through a further away entrance, cutting into the warmup time.
Novak Djokovic’s Golden Achievement
With 24 record major wins, Novak Djokovic finally secured his first Olympic gold medal at his fifth Olympics by defeating 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic expressed joy, saying, "I’ve been blessed to win pretty much everything in my sport, but this is something different."
Noah Lyles proves he’s the Fastest Man on Earth
Noah Lyles delivered a stunning performance in the 100-meter race, winning gold by a photo finish. It’s the first USA gold in the 100 meters for men in 20 years. Lyles still has the 200-meter race, his specialty, coming up this week.
Scottie Scheffler’s Emotional Victory
Scottie Scheffler brought tears to many eyes when he received his gold medal in golf after a challenging year. From becoming a father to winning the Masters and facing personal hurdles, his come-from-behind win was genuinely emotional.
Historic Win for Nigeria’s Women’s Basketball
Nigeria’s women’s basketball team made history by reaching the quarterfinals, the first African team to do so. Their reward? Facing the formidable US women’s team, who haven’t lost in 32 years and are seeking their eighth straight gold.
Celebrating Martha Stewart’s Birthday in Paris
Cookie Monster and Snoop Dogg ensured Martha Stewart had a sweet 83rd birthday at the equestrian events in Paris. Cookie Monster brought a macaron cake, making it a memorable celebration.
Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky: Record-Breaking Athletes
Simone Biles won her seventh gold medal, and Katie Ledecky now holds 14 Olympic medals, including eight golds, breaking her own record. Biles, relatable as ever, asked for a break from the constant "what's next" questions to enjoy her accomplishments.
