Monday Minute: Texas Takes The Top, Caitlin Clark Shines + UFC's Mixed Bag

Good morning! It’s Monday, September 16, and we’re heading into another action-packed week. Whether catching up with friends or chatting around the office water cooler, we have all the sports highlights you need to sound like you know what’s happening. Let’s dive into some key moments from this weekend.

Caitlin Clark's WNBA Record-Breaking Season

Caitlin Clark continues her stellar rookie season by breaking the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) assist record. She and the Indiana Fever are headed into the WNBA postseason, which kicks off this Sunday. Keep an eye on this rising star!

Solheim Cup Triumph for Team USA

In golf, the US took home a massive win at the Solheim Cup (the women’s version of the Ryder Cup - golf). Lilia Vu sealed the deal with a birdie putt on the 18th hole, giving Team USA the half-point needed to defeat Europe. Former President Obama and Jessica Alba were there to cheer on the team, adding to the excitement.

Mahomes vs. Burrow: NFL Showdown

The Kansas City Chiefs (NFL - National Football League) and Patrick Mahomes finally got the better of Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, winning a close game by just one point. Burrow had previously held a 3-1 record over Mahomes, but this time, Mahomes and Travis Kelce pulled off the win. And yes, Taylor Swift was in the suite cheering them on.

UFC at The Sphere: A Mixed Bag

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) made history with a massive event at Las Vegas' new Sphere, wowing the crowd with an immersive experience that fused cutting-edge visuals and audio. However, while the production was next-level, the fights didn’t quite live up to the hype. Still, UFC had its biggest merchandise sales ever, and it was the highest-grossing event ever ($21.8M), so in theory, that helped put a dent in the $20M UFC spent on the event in the Sphere.

Rivalry Drama: Colorado vs. Colorado State

Shedeur Sanders and Coach Prime's Colorado team won a big rivalry game over Colorado State. After the game, Shedeur refused to shake hands with the CSU quarterback, calling him out for “Sh__ talking” on Instagram. Colorado backed up the talk with a solid performance, taking home the victory.

Texas Takes Over in College Football

Big news in college football: Texas has overtaken Georgia for the No. 1 spot for the first time in 16 years. Arch Manning, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, got some playing time after starter Quinn Ewers was injured—and he even ran for a 67-yard touchdown, something neither of his famous uncles ever did.
