Boston Marathon
For the first time in its 124-year history the Boston Marathon has been cancelled. It was moved from its original date to September and organizers simply didn’t feel confident bringing that many people from all over the world together in one sweaty race. (Okay they didn’t say that exactly but surely, they thought it). It’s estimated that the city will lose about $211 million in economic impact from the race going virtual. Also, hurting? The runners raise around $40 million each year for charity. THAT’S ONE WAY TO GET OUT OF RUNNING
Overtime
ESPN and Peloton have partnered to bring you your favorite athletes sweating it out in an all-star ride for charity. If the 16 riders (eight male and eight female) reach a combined 3,000 output during their 20-minute rides tomorrow morning, then Peloton will donate one million meals to the Food Bank of New York City. The ride will be shown on ESPN so you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home while the riders, which include big name athletes from a plethora of professions, ride from the comfort of theirs. Kobe Bryant’s NBA (National Basketball Association) Hall of Fame induction ceremony is going to have to wait until 2021 as this year’s ceremony has been cancelled. The 2020 members will be honored in early 2021 with the class of 2021 receiving their own separate ceremony later in the year. When it was announced that a high profile racehorse named Nadal was retiring yesterday, its understandable that tennis fans freaked out thinking the headlines were talking about the 34-year-old tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal. Until recently, no one would’ve ever thought of Tiger Woods as an underdog. But after some distractions in his personal life and back problems that left him unable to walk, he was not even close to being the favorite to win at the Masters. Then he went and proved them all wrong. Tiger showed why he still deserves to be at the top by winning the Masters yesterday. This was his fifth Masters win and first since 2005. TIGER FOR THE WIN
Overtime
The Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants (MLB – Major League Baseball) played an 18-inning game on Friday night, the equivalent of two games in one. The Giants promised Friday night fireworks so when the game was over (the Giants won), they proceeded with their fireworks show. The only problem is that it was after 1 am. Overshadowed by the star power and success of his own team, the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry, 31, set the record for three-pointers made in the NBA (National Basketball Association) postseason. With his win, Tiger became the second oldest golfer to win the Masters. Nike celebrated by dropping an incredible commercial directly after his win. Not celebrating? The sports books. Because he was such an underdog, online betting company FanDuel said his win cost them over $2 million. An executive with William Hill (another online sports betting company) summed it up perfectly by saying, “It’s great to see Tiger back. It’s a painful day for William Hill – our biggest golf loss ever – but a great day for golf.” WIN SOME, LOSE A LOT

If you need an excuse to miss work today. Today is Patriots Day in Boston and the celebration includes the Boston Marathon followed by an early Red Sox game (MLB - Major League Baseball). Did you know that the Boston Marathon was one of the five major sporting events to continue during the World Wars? Read more fun facts about the marathon.
If you’re a goal digger. Today marks the five year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. One runner with a heartwarming story in today’s race is Jennifer Phinney. While deployed in Iraq 11 years ago, she was told her tour was being extended by six months. She dealt with the disappointment by running a Boston Marathon shadow race. Since then, she has completed a multitude of marathons, including a six-hour finish when she was eight months pregnant. She will finally have her chance to run the real race this morning, 11 years after running the shadow race in Iraq.

The wedding anticipated by fans everywhere is off. Wrestler turned actor, John Cena and his wrestler fiancée Nikki Bella have called off their wedding. Fans all over the world are heartbroken as their dreams of spandex-filled, body slamming nuptials are shattered. READ

It was not quite the birdie he was looking for. Golfer Kelly Kraft hit an actual bird on Friday on the 14th hole, causing him to miss the cut to make it into the next round in the tournament. In a statement, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) showed zero remorse for the golfer stating that, “if he would’ve practiced more, he would’ve made the cut. In a no big deal moment, the gasman for NASCAR (National Association For Stock Car Auto Racing) driver Cole Custer caught on fire during a pit stop. The gasman is the one who fills up the car with fuel during the quick stop and is obviously equipped with fireproof gear. Regardless, he was remarkably calm as flames shot off his body. As one gasman said last season “If you’re worried about catching on fire, you’re not doing your job.” We can safely say this is not the motto in our office.
