It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere

Spice up the sports-related small talk before the sun goes down.

Make it a double,

The Last Night's Game Team

NBA (National Basketball Association)

When you’re so good that details aren’t important. For the first pick in the NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns selected Deandre Ayton from the University of Arizona. Ayton had a big few days, first joining Jimmy Fallon and fellow draft prospects in a 90s themed skit. Not to be outdone, he was another athlete to fall victim to not reading a sponsored social media post before tweeting it. TWEET FAIL

When you have a fashion moment you regret. The newest members of the NBA attempted to emulate fashionable veterans LeBron James and Russell Westbrook at their big debut. Not only did University of Oklahoma’s Trae Young, who was the fifth player drafted, show up in a maroon suit…with shorts (maybe he couldn’t find pants that were long enough)? but the night’s fashion included jackets lined with logos, “Black Panther” inspired Gucci and a grandma inspired suit coat. DRAFT FASHION

Overtime

TV personality and chef, Ayesha Curry, wife of Golden State Warriors (NBA) star Steph Curry, is opening a new restaurant in Houston much to the dismay of some Houstonians. Still bitter that the Warriors knocked their Houston Rockets out of the playoffs, fans took to Yelp to rip apart the restaurant before it even opened, posting over 550 reviews. SPOUSAL SUPPORT

Sideline stat

Superstar Lionel Messi couldn’t save his once favored Argentina from a World Cup loss to Croatia yesterday. Their 3-0 loss could make it hard for his team to make it out of the first round, depending on today’s Iceland vs. Nigeria game. WHAT A MESSI

On the other hand, Messi’s rival, Cristiano Ronaldo is having a stellar World Cup, setting the European record for international goals scored in his team’s win over Morocco yesterday. SCORE

Coaches’ corner

Rules were made to be broken at least for one reporter. The NBA frowns upon insiders releasing draft picks before they’re announced. An ESPN reporter found a way to get creative with the way he revealed who teams would be selecting, using phrases on Twitter like the teams have “zoned in on,” “grown comfortable with,” or “focused in on” a certain player. SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT

Wheels up,

The Last Night’s Game Team

Winter Olympics

If you’ve been staying up too late to watch sports you didn’t even know you cared about. The Winter Olympics are coming to an end with the closing ceremony on Sunday. In the ceremony, a united Korea will hand the Olympic torch off to the site of the 2020 Summer Olympics, Tokyo. Also, keep an eye out for Ivanka Trump in attendance and the dynamic duo of former Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir in the broadcast booth.

Overtime

It’s been a great week for American gold medal snowboarder Chloe Kim. She’s on the cover of Sports Illustrated alongside her dog and she photobombed tourists with Jimmy Fallon. Then she learned that her real dream had come true. Kim will be featured on the front of Kellogg's Corn Flakes boxes.

Sideline stat

Normally when a player’s jersey number is retired, it’s never to be worn again by anyone else on the team. That is until your kin comes along. Larry Nance Jr. was recently traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA – National Basketball Association) where his father’s #22 jersey is retired. After initially declining to wear the same number as his dad, he has decided that he will in fact wear the family jewel - the #22 jersey.

Coaches’ corner

In the “yes this really happened file,” we bring you American skier representing Hungary, Elizabeth Swaney. She attempted exactly zero tricks on her halfpipe run - a run that many are calling a mockery of the sport. She made the Hungary Olympic team simply because she didn't fall during her qualifier. She's known for seeking the spotlight, having run against Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor as a college student. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video will leave you speechless.

What to watch

The men’s curling gold medal match between USA and Sweden begins at 3am Saturday morning EST and there’s still plenty of speed skating left to watch. Also, MLB (Major League Baseball) spring training games start tomorrow. Batter up!

Are you ready to be entertained?

NFL (National Football League)

Justified. Justin Timberlake will be the halftime performer for this season’s Super Bowl in Minnesota. He has performed in three halftime shows (remember nipplegate with Miss Jackson)?, but this will be the first time he’s flown solo.  Here’s his announcement featuring his friend in comedy, Jimmy Fallon.

MLB (Major League Baseball)

Started at the bottom, now were here. The World Series starts tomorrow night with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros facing off for the title of World Champions. On Wednesday, we’ll have a complete Five Things To Know about the World Series but until then we’ll leave you with this nugget of information to share in your small talk.

The first two games are in Dodgers stadium and ticket prices are absurd. On average, fans are shelling out $3,164 per seat and $888 for standing room only tickets.

Overtime

Martin Truex Jr. won Sunday’s NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) race, securing a spot in the next round of the playoffs. It was an emotional win for Truex, whose girlfriend is undergoing chemotherapy and one of this crew members passed away from a heart attack on Saturday night.

Sideline stat

The Phoenix Suns may only be three games into the season but with an 0-3 (wins-losses) record they felt it was time to fire their head coach Earl Watson. That escalated quickly.

Coaches’ corner

On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints (NFL) won their fourth game in a row. To celebrate, head coach Sean Payton is rewarding his players with pedicures. We’re thinking it really had nothing to do with the wins, he was simply tired of looking at their feet.
