College football

Saturday = couch surfing all day. It’s championship weekend in college football. That means the top two teams in a conference play each other for the conference championship. These games determine the postseason of college football (i.e all of those bowl games) and the national championship contenders. SCHEDULE

Golf

He's baack. Tiger Woods is in the Bahamas, but not for vacation. He’s hitting the green to play competitively for the first time in 300 days. Woods recently underwent spinal fusion surgery but is playing well in his comeback in the Hero World Classic. If this story sounds familiar, Woods has had quite a few “comebacks” over the past few years. So feel free to get excited, just not too excited. Yet.

 

Overtime

Carrie Bradshaw would be so proud because it’s all about the shoes this weekend in the NFL (National Football League). The “My Cause My Cleats” initiative allows players to wear customized cleats that represent a cause meaningful to them. The shoes will then be auctioned off to benefit their individual causes. Sideline stat

As part of the NFL’s plan to combat social injustice and address the causes players are kneeling for, they announced a proposal for an $89 million, seven-year initiative. The proposal funds projects dealing with criminal justice reform, law enforcement/community relations and education. Although not all players are happy with the proposal that was negotiated by their fellow athletes, many believe this is the first step. Will less players kneel during the anthem because of this milestone agreement? We’ll find out come Sunday.  

Coaches’ corner

Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB - Major League Baseball) player Andrew McCutchen took his love for his city to another level. He and his wife welcomed a new son this week and it seemed only fitting when playing in the "Steel City" that they name him Steel. Let's hope McCutchen isn't traded anytime soon.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About College Mascots

1. Replacing its Indian mascot in the 2000s, the unofficial mascot for Dartmouth is “Keggy.” The barrel of booze may be a fan favorite but sadly the school isn’t very good at sports so the rest of the world doesn’t get to join in on the fun.  

2. Albert and Alberta are the gator mascots for the University of Florida. This year the team took the gator love a little too far, creating dreadful “swamp green” alligator skin patterned jerseys. Alligators everywhere were embarrassed by this new look.  

3. Last week Ole Miss decided that their bear mascot wasn’t cutting it and adopted the landshark as their mascot. Maybe they were hoping for a sponsorship from Landshark beer? (In case you’re wondering a landshark is defined as “a swindler of sailors on shore.”)

4. Stanford University’s team name is “The Cardinal” (after the color red). The school does not have an official mascot. A pine tree has become the de facto mascot but it is technically part of the band. We’re sure you’ve seen the jubilant tree on the sidelines and wondered why someone brought a giant car freshener tree to the game. Now you know.

5. Wichita State University is known as the shockers. (Yes, you read that correctly). The nickname was originally created because many of the players worked in the off-season harvesting (aka shocking) wheat in the fields. You learn something new every day.

NFL (National Football League)

United front. On Friday, President Trump called for teams to fire any “S.O.B." who kneels during the anthem. The comments drove players, coaches and owners to stand united during yesterday’s games. Players from all teams that competed Sunday participated in some form of protest, with many standing arm-in-arm in solidarity on the sideline during the anthem.

 

MLB (Major League Baseball)

Family ties. For the first time in baseball history, a son pitched against his father’s team. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Luke Farrell took on his dad’s Boston Red Sox. Even though they were rivals on the field, his dad beamed with pride from the dugout.

 

Overtime

The 10-time all-star Carmelo Anthony is slipping into a new jersey for the upcoming NBA (National Basketball Association) season. Once the face of the New York Knicks, Anthony is the newest addition to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He will play alongside superstars Russell Westbrook and Paul George but will his fashionable gal, LaLa Anthony, make the move to the Sooner state too?

 

Sideline stat

What would you do with $10 million? Yesterday that dream became a reality to golfer Justin Thomas. The 24-year-old won the FedExCup Championship, along with the sweet trophy and the hefty cash prize. (FYI – the FedExCup is akin to the Super Bowl or World Series for the PGA – Professional Golfers Association).

 

Coaches’ Corner

The tradition of championship teams visiting the White House goes back to 1865 but the NBA Champs, the Golden State Warriors, are no longer invited. Their invitation to visit was rescinded by the White House over the weekend after many of the team’s players said they would not attend. Want more on the tradition of White House visits?
