5 Things You Didn’t Know About The Olympics

After nearly a week of Olympic coverage, you’d think you’ve heard it all. We answer the questions you were too afraid to ask in today’s Five Things To Know.

The Rundown: Finally Friday

We have that Friday feeling. It’s like finding a $20 in a pocket of your old jeans.

Glorious,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PGA (Professional Golfers Association)

  • Don’t call it a comeback. There were high hopes that in his return Tiger Woods would be competitive this year but the glass is looking half empty. He pulled out of his last golf tournament due to back spasms and cancelled a press conference for this weekend’s tournament for the same reason. We’re not doctors but if you can’t sit in a chair and talk to the press, that’s probably a sign that retirement could be around the corner.

NBA (National Basketball Association)

  • Cha-ching. The NBA All-Star Game is this weekend which prompted Forbes to release their list of the highest paid NBA players (salaries + endorsements). Looks like we need to ask for a raise.
    • LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers - $86 M
    • Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors - $62.5 M
    • Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors, $47.1 M
  • Third wheel? Western conference head coach Steve Kerr has four of his Golden State Warriors on the all-star team and plans to play them together. Will Russell Westbrook of the OKC Thunder be the odd man out on the court? Westbrook has strained relationship with Warriors’ Kevin Durant after Durant left the Thunder. Nothing like having to be civil with your ex’s hot new arm candy.
  • What does Taco Bell have to do with being able to dribble a basketball? Find out in our five things to know about the NBA All-Star Game.

Overtime

  • Ice Cube famously said, “today was a good day” and that was yesterday for Canadian tennis player Genie Bouchard.  First she made good on a Super Bowl bet with a Twitter follower. She lost the bet and had to go on a date with him. Surprise surprise, there will be a second date. After that she revealed her spread in this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

Sideline stat

  • In addition to the list of highest paid players, Forbes also released its annual valuations list of NBA franchises. Despite their recent losing seasons, the New York Knicks are #1 on the list, valued at $3.3 billion. The team at the bottom of the list? The New Orleans Pelicans, worth a mere $750 million.

Coaches’ Corner

  • Sending you off into Friday with a story of a good deed. Last Friday the founder of Little Caesar’s Pizza and owner of the Detroit Red Wings (hockey) and Detroit Tigers (baseball), Mike Ilitch passed away. He was known in the Detroit community for his generosity. In his death, a 1994 story surfaced of how he paid the rent for Rosa Parks after she was robbed.

The Rundown: 5 Intriguing Things to Know About Aaron Rodgers

Happy Hump Day! You’ve made it this far – just keep going. That’s what we’re saying about those new year’s resolutions too.

Eh who needs dry January anyway?

Five INtriguing things to know about Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

  1. On-field performance – The former backup quarterback to the great Brett Farve is one of the hottest players in the NFL with his team on a seven game winning streak. During that time, he’s thrown 19 touchdowns with 0 interceptions. Rodgers was named the league MVP in 2011 and 2014. We’ll see how he holds up this weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.
  2. Rodgers' go to touchdown dance involves imitating a WWE wrestler putting on a championship belt. When he won the Super Bowl the WWE sent him an actual World Heavyweight Championship belt. Everyone wins.
  3. His girlfriend, actress Olivia Munn, had no idea who he was when they first met, even though he had previously won a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP title. Now that’s a blow to the ego. She should've at least known him from his Allstate “Discount Double Check” commercials.
  4. His younger brother and former NFL quarterback, Jordan Rodgers, won the Bachelorette but not before airing the Rodgers family dirty laundry to the nation. Aaron wasn’t thrilled with the reporter questions that followed and refused to disclose any details. Glad we didn’t have to attend that holiday gathering.
  5. He’s more than football smart. In 2015, he appeared on Jeopardy and beat astronaut Scott Kelly. What like it’s hard?

NCAA Football (College)

  • That was epic. The last game of the college football season did not disappoint. Clemson and Alabama played a game for the ages. Alabama led most of the game but Clemson took the lead when it mattered, with one second left in the game. This is Clemson’s first championship in 35 years. Their quarterback Deshaun Watson was named the game's MVP for his great performance in the last game of his college career.

Shout out to our Last Night’s Game Bowl Game Challenge winner, Russ. Nice picking. Congrats to you!

Sideline stat

  • FIFA announced in 2026 that the World Cup will expand from 32 teams to 48 teams. Perhaps it'll give Team U.S.A. a chance to make the tournament? (They are very close to not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup).

Coaches’ corner

  • Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo won the distinction of the World’s Best Player from FIFA (in English - International Federation of Association Football). Upon receiving the award his son yelled at his dad “You’re the best in the world!” Queue hearts everywhere melting.
