Bring it on Monday,

Little League Baseball World Series

Aloha champions. Providing their state with a much needed pick me up after Hurricane Lane, the team from Hawaii beat the South Korean team to claim the title of Little League Baseball World Series Champions. The Hawaiians and their opponents then engaged in an unusual series tradition, collecting a handful of infield dirt in baggies to commemorate their playing time. BRINGING SAND TO THE BEACH

Overtime

Week one of college football starts this Thursday but the University of South Carolina Gamecocks are having to do a little extra cosmetic work before their season opener. This weekend’s Jay-Z and Beyoncé concert destroyed the turf, days before the team is scheduled to take the field. ALWAYS TIME FOR A LAST MINUTE FACE-LIFT

Last season, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton led his team to a big victory over the Baltimore Ravens (NFL – National Football League). That win couldn’t save his Bengals postseason dreams but it allowed the Buffalo Bills to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. In gratitude, Bills fans donated $450,000 to Dalton’s charity. This weekend during his first game back in Buffalo, Dalton turned the tables and made a $450,000 donation to the Roswell Park Cancer Center in downtown Buffalo, earning him a standing ovation from the Bills' fans. RESPECT

Coaches’ corner

Yesterday, The Players’ Tribune published an essay by Golden State Warriors’ (NBA – National Basketball Association) Steph Curry entitled “It’s Personal,” highlighting the need for gender equality. The NBA MVP is surrounded by women including his wife, Ayesha - a successful chef and restaurateur and two young daughters. He spoke about how he wants his girls “to grow up in a world where their gender does not feel like a rulebook for what they should think, or be, or do.” READ THE INSPIRING ESSAY HERE

What to watch

Starting Off On The Right Foot

It’s Super Bowl week and sports will surely dominate the conversation over the next few days. Make the week yours by owning the conversation.

Where the magic happens,

PS – Las Vegas fans, catch us this morning at 8:15 am PST on CW as we talk Super Bowl or you can watch it live here.

NFL (National Football League)

If your work promotion isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Yesterday's NFL all-star game, the Pro Bowl, resembled a backyard pickup game with its laissez-faire attitude but the AFC (American Football Conference) still beat the NFC (National Football Conference). The winning team members each took home a $64,000 bonus and the losers cashed in at $32,000. Oddly enough, the winners of the Pro Bowl actually end up making more than the losing team in the Super Bowl.

Overtime

The Senior Bowl showcases college senior football players’ talents one last time for NFL scouts. You may have seen the big oops video of Shaquem Griffin being interviewed on the sideline instead of participating in a play on the field. What you may not know is that Griffin plays football one handed because he lost his left hand at age four. Now that’s impressive.

Sideline stat

Yesterday at the ripe old age of 36, a tearful Roger Federer won the Australian Open and his 20th Grand Slam title. Federer is the first male to win 20 Grand Slam tournaments. Serena Williams won her record 23rd at the same tournament last year.

A Grand Slam in tennis describes one of the four major tournaments - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Coaches’ corner

Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey is taking her Hollywood acting career to a different level, signing a full-time contract with WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). She made her first appearance last night at the Royal Rumble. WWE has also been in the news lately because its chariman Vince McMahon is reviving the previously defunct XFL (Xtreme Football League).

Stay tuned - Wednesday is the day you've been waiting for all year - our Super Bowl edition of Five Things To Know. Don't miss out!

Talk amongst yourselves,

The Last Night's Game Team

NFL (National Football League)

  • Welcome home. In the team's first game at home, JJ Watt received a hero's welcome. The Houston Texans player has raised over $31 million and counting for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Alongside donations from other athletes, superstars like Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Fallon made significant contributions to the fund.
  • Build it and they will come.  The Los Angeles Rams opened their season yesterday and they dominated the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately, there were few people in the crowd to witness the win. Twitter had a field day with the awful attendance.
  • Coming up. In case you didn't get enough football this weekend, tonight there are two Monday Night Football games. One will feature the first female broadcaster to ever call a nationally televised football game.

Tennis

  • On top of the world. Sloane Stephens went from unseeded (ranked 934 in the world) to Women’s U.S. Open champion on Saturday. The tournament believes in equal pay when it comes to the winner's earnings and Stephens reaction to receiving her $3.7M check is priceless.

College Football

  • Victorious. In the big game of the weekend, the underdog Oklahoma Sooners (5) leveled the Ohio State Buckeyes (2) at home. Although the real excitement came from the Louisiana Tech game where the football had the last laugh during this play.

Overtime

  • Remember when your mom would call you by the name of your sibling when she was mad? The Indianapolis Colts coach was so distraught by the blowout loss (see above) he kept referring to the Rams as the San Francisco 49ers when talking to reporters. Someone get this man a beer. Stat!

Sideline stat

  • Rafael Nadal was crowned the Men’s U.S. Open champion for his 16th career Grand Slam win, three behind the record 19 wins held by Roger Federer. If we’re throwing out numbers, Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slams.

(A Grand Slam, also known as a major, is one of the four major tournaments in tennis).

Coaches’ corner

  • MLB (Major League Baseball) season is winding down, with the playoffs beginning in October. This weekend the Washington Nationals became the first team to secure a playoff spot.
