The Rundown: Weekend Preview Edition - Hug A Veteran

Today is Veteran’s Day where we honor those who have fought for our freedom. Take the time to thank a veteran for their service. If you want to talk to them about sports, we have you covered for that too.

There’s something for everyone,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – It’s Friday and that means it’s time for a tailgate treat! Today’s feature is Warm Artichoke and Bacon Dip. Did someone say bacon?

NFL (National Football League)

  • No vacancy. The vote to raise the hotel tax to pay for the San Diego Chargers’ new stadium failed in this week’s election. The future of the team remains uncertain. As you may recall, the Chargers we’re approved by the NFL owners to move the team to Los Angeles and share a stadium with the newly anointed Los Angeles Rams. The Chargers have until January 15th to make a decision to move to L.A. or not.

UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)

  • The wait is over. This weekend will feature the first UFC fight ever in New York – UFC 205. Headliner Conor McGregor is the organization’s top money maker. To prove it, he’s been driving around the city in a Rolls Royce with a custom paint job featuring his face and nickname “Notorious.”  Here's the fight card (a menu of who’s fighting). Don’t be surprised if the women’s fights end up being the best. Click here for our Five Things to Know About UFC.

NCAA Basketball (College)

  • Aloha basketball. College basketball begins today with four teams playing in this year’s Armed Forces Classic in Hawaii. One of the teams, The University of Arizona, will wear special “U.S.S. Arizona” uniforms to honor the ship that sank in the battle at Pearl Harbor. For the full college basketball schedule, click here

NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing)

  • Race to the finish. Sunday will be the last chance for six drivers to claim the final two spots in the elimination-style playoffs - the “Chase for the Cup.” A total of four drivers will move on to the final round to race for the title of “NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion.”  (Drivers Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards have already claimed their spots in the final round with previous wins).

Overtime

  • Florida International University tight end Jonnu Smith is out the rest of the season with an injury that was not sustained through football. His girlfriend dumped a pot of boiling water on his head during an argument. Yowza! She is five months pregnant with their child and now faces felony assault charges.

Sideline stat

  • Today is one of the most important rivalry games for Team U.S.A. as they look to qualify for the 2018 Soccer World Cup. They will take on southern neighbor Mexico in Columbus, OH. Team U.S.A. has beaten Mexico 2-0 in the last four World Cup qualifying matches played in Columbus. The game can be seen on Fox Sports One at 8 pm EST.

Coaches’ Corner

  • It was purely coincidence that the Cleveland Cavaliers made the traditional NBA Champions trip to the White House on the same day as the new President Elect. There was no talk of politics, only praise from President Obama for the Cavs who overcame an insurmountable deficit in last season’s finals to beat the Golden State Warriors.

The Rundown: Weekend Preview Edition - That's All Folks

So not much has happened since we last chatted. Some basketball and football. Oh and a little game that everyone and their mother watched…game seven of the World Series. If you’ve been living under a rock without social media, then we have the spoiler alert on what happened.

They’re still partying in the streets,

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – We don’t know about you but our favorite party food involves anything where a tortilla chip substitutes for a spoon. For today’s Tailgate Treat, check out this great recipe for seven-layer dip.

MLB (Major League Baseball)

  • Finally! The Chicago Cubs did what only six teams had done before and overcame a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series. The Cubs finally broke the curse of the goat by defeating the Cleveland Indians in game seven and they even had to do it in extra innings. The game was a tense one. It was tied at the end of the regular nine innings and mother nature took over with 17-minute weather delay around midnight EST.  The Cubs came out and scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to win.
  • First timer. Chicago’s Ben Zobrist became the first ever member of the Chicago Cubs to win the title of World Series MVP. (* - the award wasn’t created until 1955). Zobrist knocked in the game winning run in the top of the 10th inning.
  • Retail therapy. With a short 108-year gap between championships, Cubs fans are streaming in to buy World Series Champions gear.  Sales on MLB’s website are expected to top $70 million in sales in the first 24 hours (the most ever). More gear was sold in 15 hours after the Cubs’ victory than the league's best month of sales for all teams combined.

NCAA Football (College)

  • They’re greeeat! College GameDay heads to Baton Rouge, LA for match-up between SEC (Southeastern Conference) powerhouses. Alabama Crimson Tide (#1) takes on LSU Tigers (Louisiana State University - #13). Alabama is undefeated and LSU is 3-0 since firing their head coach and promoting an interim coach. Will LSU channel their inner Tony the Tiger to topple the leader?

NCAA Soccer (College)

  • Not cool. Harvard University abruptly ended their men’s soccer season after they discovered the men’s team had crafted a “sexually explicit” report on the women’s soccer team. That’ll land you on Santa’s naughty list and in some serious hot water.

Overtime

  • A Cleveland sports fan thought he’d be a trendsetter with his body art, so before game seven of the World Series he added a “Cleveland Indians 2016 Champs” tattoo. He tweeted a photo of it with the caption “Some call it bold, but I call it faith in Kluber @Indians #rolltribe.” (Kluber was the Indians starting pitcher). You see the only problem is that the Indians lost game seven. We hope he has faith in the guy doing laser tattoo removal.

Sideline stat

  • Wednesday night’s World Series game was the highest rated baseball game in the last 25 years - over 40 million people watched the game on FOX.

Coaches’ corner

  • Now that the Cubs’ have finally won a World Series, who will be next? Well here are the major American pro sports teams with the longest overall title drought. None of them hold a candle to a 108-year drought though:
  1. Arizona Cardinals (NFL) – 1947 (69 years)
  2. Cleveland Indians (MLB) – 1948 (68 years)
  3. Sacramento Kings (NBA) – 1951 (65 years)
  4. Detroit Lions (NFL) – 1957 (59 years)

The Rundown: Weekend Preview Edition - Ghoulishly Good

Halloween is in the air. Worried what topics to talk about besides favorite candy choices while you’re partying it up with ghosts and goblins this weekend? We have you covered with a ghoulishly good Rundown.

Boo!

The Last Night’s Game Team

PS – As the weather starts to cool down, this Tailgate Treat from Last Night’s Game super fan Barry and the team over at Edible Magazine is just what the doctor ordered. Here’s their recipe for chili-cornbread pie

MLB (Major League Baseball)

  • Cubbies fever. The World Series continues in Chicago tonight. The Indians and Cubs will play the next three games (Fri-Sun) at Wrigley Field. The teams are tied in the series at 1-1. Tickets for the games at Wrigley are going for as much as $19,000 each. While watching a game at a bar in Wrigleyville could cost you $250 just to get in. Better hit the ATM.
  • Hard work pays off. The comeback story of the World Series has been the return of Cubs’ slugger Kyle Schwarber. He had a season ending knee injury in April which prevented him from playing in an MLB game all season. Schwarber trained hard and was placed on the World Series roster primarily as a designated hitter where he brought a much needed offensive spark. You won't be seeing as much of him in the next three games because they will be played by National League rules - no designated hitter.

NCAA Football (College)

  • Heading west. ESPN College GameDay heads to Salt Lake City ahead of the game between the undefeated Washington Huskies (#4) playing the Utah Utes (#17). Washington features sophomore quarterback Jake Browning who is an early Heisman trophy contender.

NFL (National Football League)

Overtime

  • Two-time Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison announced that she will pursue a career in MMA (mixed martial arts) now that her Olympic career is over. The path from judo to MMA has been paved by Ronda Rousey who is the matriarch of women fighting in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

Sideline stat

  • NASCAR’s “Chase for the Cup” continues with the round of eight drivers this weekend. There are three races in this round. Winners are guaranteed a spot in the next and final round. Jimmie Johnson is the overwhelming favorite to advance, winning 18 times at the three tracks in this round.

Coaches’ Corner

  • Since the 1950’s, the rivalry game between Florida (#14) and Georgia has been dubbed the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” due to the excessive number of people tailgating. This year the organizers are promoting it as the “River City Showdown” to pay homage to Jacksonville, leaving fans from both sides very upset. Hey they earned that title! (Check out the funny Twitter reactions).
