The Race For The Triple Crown

When there’s no surprise here. Kentucky Derby winner, Justify, was the heavy favorite in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. It wasn’t pretty but Justify easily won the sloppy, muddy race. The Preakness is the second of three races a horse has to win to achieve the Triple Crown. With two of those races in the bag, the next stop for Justify is the Belmont Stakes on June 9, where he hopes to become the next Triple Crown winner. MORE ON THE RACE

Overtime

Speaking of crowns, you couldn’t avoid the coverage of the royal wedding this weekend. As expected, even the sporty were invited. Tennis star Serena Williams and soccer great David Beckham, along with their spouses, looked the part donning a different kind of uniform for the royal celebration. PICS

Sideline stat

The first all-athlete season of Dancing With The Stars comes to a close tonight in the season finale and may the most coordinated win. The final three athletes left standing are Josh Norman, player for the Washington Redskins (NFL – National Football League) and two members of the Olympic figure skating team – Adam Rippon and Tonya Harding. With “Star Wars” favorite Chewbacca sitting courtside, the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA – National Basketball Association) embodied the power of the force when they dominated the Boston Celtics in their playoff game this weekend. Did you know that new Chewbacca is actually played by former Penn State and Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo? So maybe the wookie does have game? (PS – the Cavs are down 2-1 in the semifinal series against the Celtics).

What to watch

The Vegas Golden Knights are in! In their inaugural season the team continues to chase history, defeating the Winnipeg Jets last night to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. They’re waiting on their opponent, the victor of the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning series. The two teams will play tonight for a spot in the finals. SCHEDULE

MLB (Major League Baseball)

When all you gave mom was a gift certificate. It was an extra special Mother’s Day for Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers. His parents, who live in the Dominican Republic, flew in to see their son pitch in the minor leagues when he received the call that he was needed on the big club. On Sunday, Peralta started his first major league game with his parents right there in the stands to witness his historic start. WATCH

NHL (National Hockey League)

When you have two good options. Nashville Predators super fan, Carrie Underwood, offered to sing the national anthem at a Vegas Golden Knights playoff game since her team is no longer in the playoffs. (Husband Mike Fisher plays for the Predators). The Golden Knights, like many hockey teams, have a dedicated anthem singer so they politely declined the generous offer. HIT THE HIGH NOTE

Overtime

From the "this really exists file." A Boston University student set the record for joggling - jogging while juggling. He ran a four minute, 43.2 second mile while juggling three lacrosse balls. We can’t even walk and chew gum at the same time. NOW THAT'S TALENT

Sideline stat

Golfer Jason Dufner’s golf ball is too good for its home. Yesterday in the final round of the Players Championship, his poor putting cost him $726,000 in prize money when he missed out on a second place finish. Seems like it would be cheaper to hire a putting coach? READ

Coaches’ corner

Some European soccer leagues have what is called relegation. Relegation is basically keeping the league competitive by demoting the worst teams in the highest division to a lower division and promoting the best in the lower division. (Think sending the Los Angeles Dodgers team down to play in the minor leagues and bringing a minor league team up).

In the German Bundesliga (the German soccer league), Hamburg was relegated and the fans weren’t happy. They weren’t going down without a fight and in protest tried to burn down the stadium. That’ll show them. FEELING HOT HOT HOT

Kentucky Derby

Coming up roses. In one of the wettest races in history, the horse Justify did what everyone expected him to do – win the Kentucky Derby. Something unexpected was a Texas woman’s $18 bet at a local track that turned into a $1.2 million win. She cashed in after picking the correct Derby winner and the winning horses of the four races before. Let’s hope her good luck rubs off on Justify in the newfound quest for the Triple Crown. MORE ON THE RACE

Overtime

Lady Antebellum joined the big names to sing the national anthem before a Nashville Predators playoff game (NHL – National Hockey League). The anthem, which is not the easiest song to sing, has a way of humbling even the greatest of singers. The trio botched the lyrics but least they had a great sense of humor afterward stating on Twitter, “Welp. We’re human too y’all We’re still rooting for ya Preds!!!” No use crying over spilt milk. REACTIONS

Sideline stat

Whew it was a big weekend in MLB (Major League Baseball). Not only did Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s Albert Pujols secure his place in history with his 3,000th hit, the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff combined for a no-hitter and of course the best part, the first use of the crazy fast bullpen cart. WATCH IT GO

Coaches’ corner

You had one job. The Philadelphia 76ers (NBA – National Basketball Association) hit a shot at the end of their playoff game, which the confetti guy though was a winning shot. Unfortunately for him, the shot only tied the game and the 76ers lost to the Boston Celtics in overtime (after cleaning up all of the “victory” confetti on the court).  OOPS!

What to watch

Tonight, two teams might be sent home in the NBA playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers could sweep the Toronto Raptors and the Celtics could do the same to the 76ers. (WHAT’S A SWEEP)? Carrying the Cavs is their star LeBron James, who was spoofed in a hilarious skit on Saturday Night Live this weekend. WATCH
