Wit And Wisdom
Why you won’t see Russia at any major sporting events, it’s officially bowl game season and why one sports team needs a geography lesson.
It’s holiday party time and you’re going to rock the small talk.

Hold onto your hats, it’s officially bowl season in college football. We now know who will play in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl but most importantly, we know the four teams that will battle it out in the playoffs. Only four teams have a chance to play for the national championship and this year it’s LSU (#1) vs. Oklahoma (#4) and Ohio State (#2) vs. Clemson (#3) in the playoffs. The teams will take the field on December 28. The aforementioned bowl games start on December 20. CURRENTLY EATING OUT OF A CEREAL BOWL

The Kansas City Chiefs (NFL - National Football League) had a rough start to their Sunday. They almost had to forfeit their game against the New England Patriots because they had no equipment. Their gear went to New Jersey instead of Massachusetts. The gear made it just in time for the game. Then the Chiefs went on to defeat the Patriots at home, where they haven’t lost in 21 games. The Chiefs clinched their division. SOMEONE IS IN BIG TROUBLE

The World Anti-Doping Agency has banned Russia from all major sporting events for four years. They won’t be able to compete in the 2020 and 2022 Olympics or the 2022 World Cup (soccer) in Qatar. Russian athletes who can prove they were untainted by the doping scandal can compete under a neutral flag. (At the 2018 Winter Olympics, 168 Russian athletes competed under a neutral flag). Russia’s sentence is part of a long list of suspensions in recent years for state-sponsored doping programs. CHEATERS NEVER PROSPER

Last week the Fort Myers Miracle minor league baseball team (MLB – Major League Baseball) changed their name to the Mighty Mussels. Minor league baseball teams have been changing their names (or not changing them in the case of the Grand Junction Chubs) to garner attention and of course, put butts in seats. MLB.com came up with a quiz to see if you could tell the difference between real minor league teams and team names they made up. LET’S GO SEA UNICORNS! (REALLY)

Rivalry weekend in college football did not disappoint. Alabama lost again and Michigan still can’t beat their rivals at Ohio State. The conference championships are this week and then we’ll roll into college football bowl game season. Yep, the toilet bowl is around the corner. THE END IS NEAR

Break out your tissues for this one. Michigan State senior Josh Butler lost both of his parents over the course of his college career, so he had no one to walk out with him during senior night this weekend. Cue man’s best friends, Roxy and Remi, his dogs that stepped in to escort him on his momentous night. GOOD DOGS

The NBA’s (National Basketball Association) leading candidate for MVP Luca Doncic not only plays a big game but has a big heart. He helped raise over $2.2 million for boy he never met. Kris Zudich has a rare genetic condition and with Doncic’s help the little guy was able to receive treatment at UCLA and the two finally met this weekend. The very expensive treatment was possible thanks to generous Slovenian citizens and celebrities like Doncic. COME TOGETHER

A crazy weekend in football, Thanksgiving came early for one fan & why pants are now a-go in Canada.

This weekend in college football was bananas. Yep, bananas. An unranked Arizona State beat Oregon (#6) and Ohio State (#2) remained undefeated against Penn State (#9). Why does that matter? Well we’re getting down to the end of the season and the top four ranked teams will be the only teams to move on to the playoffs. Everyone else, if they’re eligible, can play in a bowl game (i.e. bring in some serious cash for their school’s football program). UPSET THE WHOLE APPLE CART

Thanksgiving came early for one Chicago Bears (NFL) fan who snuck an entire pumpkin pie into yesterday’s game. A video posted to Twitter showed him enjoying the pie with an entire can of whipped cream. No word on where or how he smuggled the pie into the stadium. A HERO WE NEVER KNEW WE NEEDED

Canadian winters just became a little more tolerable for one Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Canadian Football League) fan. You might recall the story about Chris Matthew who pledged to not wear pants until his team won the Grey Cup. After a long 18 years of bearing his stems during the winter, Matthew can finally be warm again because his team beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Grey Cup (the CFL Championship) last night. On Friday, we talked about Lizzo’s mystery man on the Minnesota Vikings (NFL) and today we reveal another Minnesota mystery. Did you know the inventor of the NERF football was none other than a Minnesota Viking himself, kicker Fred Cox? The all-time leading scorer for the Vikings recently passed at the age of 80.
