What Is Monday?

Can Leprechauns catch COVID, tributes to Trebek and the inspirational story you need to start your day.

We’ll take mastering the art of small talk for $500 Alex.

Daily double,

The Last Night’s Game Team

College Football

It took two overtimes but the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (No. 4) took down the No. 1 team in the country in Clemson on Saturday. Clemson was without their top prospect quarterback Trevor Lawrence who was out with COVID (but was on the sidelines in a mask). Clemson hadn’t lost a regular season game since 2017 so as fans tend to do after a big win, the Irish fans rushed the field postgame. We can’t help but wonder if COVID will take down the Notre Dame student population before the Irish play again next weekend? WHO IS A LEPRECHAUN WITH COVID?

Overtime

This weekend we lost longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek to pancreatic cancer. The wave of shock and disbelief hit the sports world hard as was evident by the tributes to the 80-year-old TV icon from a whole host of sports legends. Did you know that Trebek was also part of Canadian sports shows “Championship Series Saturday” and “Sports-a-Plenty” before signing onto “Jeopardy!?” WHAT ARE ALEX’S BEST SPORTS MOMENTS?

Driver Chase Elliot followed in his father Bill Elliott’s footsteps, winning a NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) championship in the No. 9 car. With his win yesterday, Chase and his father became the third father-son duo to win NASCAR championships. At the age of 24, he is also the third youngest champion ever. WHAT ARE GOOD GENETICS?

Coaches’ corner

Here’s the inspirational story that you need to start your week. Chris Nikic became the first person with down syndrome to complete an IronMan race over the weekend. The Florida man completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run within the required 17-hour time frame to become an IronMan. He said “The doctors and experts said I couldn’t do anything, so I said, Doctor! Experts! You need to stop doing this to me. You’re wrong!’” WHO IS A LEGEND?

You Gotta Fight For Your Right

What to talk about instead of the election. How about a surprise engagement, voting alongside legends and free beer for Chicago?

While the election is going to dominate the conversation this week, but you can redirect and deflect with sports.

Saving your sanity,

The Last Night’s Game Team

Election Day

Look, we all know the only conversation being had this week is going to be about the election so how about turn that into a positive spin vs. a cringeworthy conversation. Did you know that over 60 professional and collegiate sporting facilities have turned into poling locations for the election? Voters can line up at Dodgers Stadium, Fenway Park and Madison Square Garden, to name a few. SAVE THE DRAMA FOR YOUR MAMA

The biggest news of the weekend was surely the engagement of power couple Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe. The two were on vacation when Rapinoe, the U.S. Women’s National Team captain (soccer), popped the question to Bird, a WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) super star. This ring is the second big bling for Bird in 2020 as her Seattle Storm team won the WNBA Championship. The two met at the 2016 Summer Olympics and together they have five Olympic Gold Medals and a plethora of championships. Clearly, the two make our list of the top five power couples in sports and here’s who else is on that list. MATCH MADE IN (OLYMPIC) HEAVEN

The Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL – National Football League) are the only team to start the season 7-0 and it’s the first time the team has done so since 1978. Why is that such a notable year? Well that’s the year the Steelers started the season 7-0 and won the Super Bowl. The New York Jets on the other hand are 0-8. WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

Coaches’ corner

Jon Lester has had a great run with the Chicago Cubs (MLB - Major League Baseball), even helping them win the 2016 World Series. But all things must come to an end and he wanted to thank Cubs fans. So this weekend he offered to buy any fan who ordered a Miller Lite at one of four bars a beer. He spent over $25,000 on 3,466 beers. SO LONG, FAREWELL

Go For It

Lindsey Vonn shuts it down, vegan pups make the best cheerleaders and this World Series is a nail bitter.

No pain, no gain.

Take that Monday,

The Last Night’s Game Team

MLB (Major League Baseball)

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one game away from winning the World Series but don't count out the Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers' pitcher Clayton Kershaw was the star of the show in last night's game, but his kids stole the limelight by taking over his postgame interview Zoom call. In this David vs. Goliath series, it's anyone's guess who will win Tuesday night's game six. ON THE EDGE OF OUR SEATS

Overtime

Former Olympic gold medalist, skier Lindsey Vonn has been enjoying the beaches of the Bahamas but it’s been anything but relaxing for her. As any normal person does, she posted photos of her vacation wearing a bikini but body shamers have been attacking her online. The strong and confident Vonn hit back saying “I’m a normal person and sometimes I slouch, my stomach folds over, my cellulite shows on my butt, or I don’t fill out my swimsuit top just right…I always remember how my body has helped me achieve amazing things in my life and I am proud of how strong I am. I’m not a size zero and that’s perfectly fine with me.” DAMN RIGHT

At only 35 years old, Lewis Hamilton already cemented his legacy as one of the most dominant drivers in the history of Formula One (F1) Racing. Yesterday he set a new record for career wins with 92. Even though the critics aren’t having it, you better believe that his pup Roscoe is getting a few extra vegan dog treats to celebrate. PAWS UP

Coaches’ corner

UFC’s (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Russian superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov won on Saturday, improving his record to 29-0. The organization’s most dominant fighter did something no one was expecting after the fight, he retired. He cited not wanting to fight anymore without his father in his corner. His dad recently passed away. MAKING HIM PROUD

What to watch

One of the more interesting things happening in football is how horrible the NFC East is. (The NFC is one of the two conferences in the NFL - National Football League - and the east is one of the four divisions within the conference). Through seven weeks of the football season, the Philadelphia Eagles are in first place with only two wins.
