Summer Olympics
This weekend swimmer Ryan Lochte did not qualify for the Summer Olympics, but runner Allyson Felix did. Felix's two-year-old cheered her mama on from the stands as she qualified for her fifth Olympics, her first as a mom. You might remember Felix took on Nike for their maternity policy for female athletes. (Nike has since changed its policies, and they do not apply any performance-related reductions for 18 months if an athlete becomes pregnant). GOLDEN GIRL

We’ve officially heard it all when it comes to fantasy football punishment. Lee Sanderlin lost his fantasy league, and instead of getting a funny tattoo or making him wax a body part, he had to spend 24 hours in a Waffle House restaurant. There was a caveat. He could shave off an hour for every waffle he ate. He took to Twitter to pass the time, and his journey went viral. A ‘mere’ 9 waffles, and 15 hours later, Sanderlin went home with a stomachache and said he might never eat another waffle again. PASS THE PEPTO

Golfer Jon Rahm is calling it karma. Over two weeks ago, he was in the lead at the Memorial Tournament and had to drop out after testing positive for COVID. Yesterday he took home his first major win (there are four major tournaments in the PGA – Professional Golfers Association). He is the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Open, and he celebrated his Father’s Day win with his newborn baby boy. The course, Torrey Pines, also holds a special place in Rahm’s heart as that’s where he proposed to his wife. FULL CIRCLE

New Orleans Saints (NFL – National Football League) Alvin Kamara is diversifying his resume from football. The football-playing racing fan has joined NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) in a growth and engagement adviser role. The scariest moment we’ve seen in a long time in sports occurred on Saturday afternoon. During the Euro 2020, a competition between European countries, Danish player Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field. The world watched as the medical team administered CPR and used a defibrillator. He was taken to the hospital. According to the team’s doctor, "He was gone,” but thankfully, he is in stable condition. The two teams suspended the match until later Saturday night. (Finland won the game in the end). It’s shaping up to be a big week for the Ledecky family. Katie is one of the most dominant swimmers in Olympic history, is competing in the Olympic trials. Her uncle’s New York Islanders are playing the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup semifinals (NHL – National Hockey League) and have claimed game one. FAMILY AFFAIR

The unsung heroine of the weekend is Barbora Krejcikova. A day after winning her first tennis major in the women’s singles at the French Open, she claimed the champion title in the women’s double with her longtime partner Katerina Siniakov. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic (No. 1) won his 19th Grand Slam (one shy of Rafael Nadal and Rodger Federer). Afterward, he gave his racket to an ecstatic young fan. ALL-AROUND WINNER

The Logan Paul and Floyd Mayweather boxing match ended in a way no one expected - with a draw. Mayweather, who is regarded as one of the best boxers of all time, complemented Paul, saying he was better than he thought. You might be wondering why the two agreed to fight anyway, and it seems the answer has a lot to do with money. Mayweather said, "I can fight a fighter right now, and I can guarantee myself $35 million, or me and Logan Paul, a YouTuber, we can go out and entertain and have fun and make nine figures. $100 million or more." Is there anything she can’t do? A few weeks ago, Simone Biles performed the most dangerous vault – the Yurchenko double pike vault – that no female gymnast has dared to try in competition. Yesterday she claimed her seventh U. S. Championship title – the most victories for a woman. Next up are the Olympic trials at the end of the month. Two top scorers at the trial will earn a spot on the Olympic team, and a selection committee will choose the remaining two. SUPER HUMAN

Just as the world is opening up again, the doors closed for golfer Jon Rahm. Rahm had a significant lead heading into the final round at the Memorial Tournament (PGA – Professional Golfers Association) only to find out on live television that he had tested positive for COVID. He had to forgo the potential victory and the $1.6 million in prize money. OUCH

Canada might change their mind after the last story, but they’re opening up their borders amidst the Stanley Cup playoffs (NHL – National Hockey League). Now they’re allowing teams to cross the border to play in the next round of the playoffs. This allows for Canadian teams in the playoffs to potentially host a home game. It’s been a wild week at the French Open (tennis). First, Naomi Osaka drops out, and now Serena Williams is out (lost in the fourth round), and so is Roger Federer (knee).
