We’re serving up spooky good icebreakers for your Halloween weekend.
1. The World Series begins tonight
The much-anticipated World Series (MLB - Major League Baseball) begins tonight, featuring an unlikely matchup between the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Believe it or not, two years ago, both teams suffered through seasons where they lost more than 100 games. But here they are, ready to compete for baseball's most prestigious title. The Rangers have even turned to the power of music by using Creed's songs to boost their postseason aspirations.
Keep an eye on two standout players – Corbin Carrol of the Diamondbacks, the favorite to win the National League Rookie of the Year after an impressive debut season, and Adolis Garcia, the American League Championship Series MVP, who is currently on fire.
Oh, and don't forget the "Steal A Base Steal A Taco" promotion from Taco Bell – it's back for more excitement this World Series.
2. History in the Making: Female Notre Dame Leprechaun
This Saturday, for the first time, a female student will portray Notre Dame's iconic Leprechaun mascot at a football game. Kylee Kazenski will step into the mascot's green suit. She’s one of two women selected for Notre Dame's Leprechaun lineup for the 2023-24 school year.
3. The Ultimate Wardrobe Whoops
We've all had those moments when we've packed the wrong outfit for a trip, right? The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) recently had a similar mishap. They accidentally left their road white jerseys in El Paso and wore their home blue jerseys for a Wednesday night game at Sam Houston. The result? UTEP in blue and the Bearkats in orange; quite kind of the hosts to change their uniforms to accommodate.
And speaking of uniforms, the Tennessee Titans (NFL - National Football League) wearing their "throwbacks" has sparked a debate. While these throwbacks are some of the best in the league, they pay tribute to the Houston Oilers, a franchise that left Houston for Nashville and became the Titans.
4. If you’re on Taylor Swift watch
Lastly, don't forget to tune in on Sunday afternoon as the Kansas Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos.
So, ladies, this weekend promises a rollercoaster of emotions and unexpected moments in the sports world. From the World Series to female empowerment with the Notre Dame Leprechaun and even wardrobe mishaps, there's something for everyone. Grab your popcorn and prepare for a fantastic weekend of sports and surprises!

Making Sports Your Secret Weapon: Connecting Through the Love of the Game
Use the universal language of sports to forge meaningful connections and create lasting bonds.

We live in an incredibly diverse world with various languages, people, and cultures. Yet, as different as we might be, there are a number of universal values that we share across all cultures. One of the greatest universal values is sports. While each country might have its own favorite sport or unique set of rules, you can always find someone enjoying the competition and camaraderie that comes with a good game. The universal nature of sports means that it's more than just entertainment or a way to stay healthy: it's a secret weapon for connecting with others.
At this point, sports' social and emotional benefits are well established, with teams coming together to work towards a shared goal and fans uniting behind their favorite teams. Relationships forged between teammates can last far beyond playing the sport together, with the game serving as a bridge to form meaningful connections. Additionally, the lessons learned among your players can easily translate to other settings if you have the right mindset. Many organizations could learn a great deal about teamwork from sports, as successful teams excel at uniting behind common goals and values.
Perhaps the most important social value that sports can offer, though, is its ability to transcend cultural, racial and social differences. One can see this through the popularity of iconic sports figures, who have often become global ambassadors who extend beyond cultural boundaries, inspiring and motivating people worldwide. From Lionel Messi to Serena Williams, the enduring appeal of these athletes shows that the love of sports is not limited to one's native borders. By eliminating these barriers, sports can be a valuable medium for celebrating and promoting inclusivity, celebrating individuals from diverse backgrounds, including different ethnicities, genders, religions and abilities. We look at brands like TOGETHXR, which promotes equal rights, coverage, and investment in women athletes of all ages, races and backgrounds to support this case.
This potential for cross-cultural exchange also extends to sporting events. International sports competitions can serve as a stage for different countries to showcase their unique traditions and ways of life, allowing spectators and athletes to expand their horizons and better understand people from other cultures. Additionally, these events raise awareness of important issues. For instance, Prince Harry's Invictus Games support the rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women while giving them greater attention and recognition in society.
Additionally, international sports competitions can serve as a platform for individuals to forge connections and build friendships across cultures. The camaraderie and mutual respect developed through friendly competition can lay the foundation for lasting relationships beyond the playing field. Teammates like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have proven to be friends on and off the field. Still, even rivals like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson have forged lasting friendships through the mutual respect they developed through close competition.
Sports have continually proven capable of blurring the lines between cultures and destroying the barriers that keep us apart. Recognizing how sports can initiate conversations and build rapport allows people to explore new opportunities to develop connections and expand their social awareness. When people unite behind a common goal, incredible things can happen. The world's shared love of sports shows how we can tap into this instinct, building a better and more inclusive society in the process.
Breaking Down The 2023-24 NBA Season

It's time for a new NBA (National Basketball Association) season. If you're not much of a basketball fan, don't worry; there's something for everyone so that you can enjoy the season. We have much to unpack, from championship glory to unexpected offseason antics.
Denver Nuggets: Reigning Champions
First off, congratulations to the Denver Nuggets for clinching last season's NBA championship over the Miami Heat. Nikola Jokic was the star of the show, and during the off-season, he took a little detour from basketball. Instead of focusing on his MVP status, he lived his best life in Serbia with his racing horses. Jokic openly admitted that he'd rather be with his horses than on the basketball court. Now, that's a guy who knows how to enjoy his downtime. If you want a good laugh, check out this NPR article.
LeBron's 21st season
LeBron James, the legend himself, is entering his 21st NBA season. He turns 39 in December and often plays against opponents about half his age. He's aiming to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their 18th championship. The man is already the league's leading scorer and enters a "gap year" before his son, Bronny, becomes draft-eligible. You can read all about it here.
Introducing Victor Wembanyama
And last but not least, keep an eye out for the debut of No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. He's set to make his first appearance on the second night of the season, playing for San Antonio against Dallas on October 25. This young talent promises to bring some excitement to the league, but even at 7'4", how will he hold up against bigger and stronger players like James and Jokic?
Load Management in the NBA
There are some new rules this season around load management. Teams have an average of 14 back-to-back games this season, with fewer involving travel than the previous year. The NBA is cracking down on teams resting star players, imposing hefty fines if they sit them during nationally televised or in-season tournament games. Players like rookie Wembanyama are not eligible for load management rules, but 3x All-Stars are. You can read more about the updated policy here.
In-Season Tournament
This season, the NBA is introducing an exciting In-Season Tournament. It kicks off on November 3 and culminates with the Championship on December 9. Teams are divided into groups, and players compete for impressive cash prizes. Get all the tournament details here.
Off-Season Drama Galore
Now, let's talk about some off-season drama that's almost as exciting as the actual season. Jimmy Butler had a field day on media day with a photo that had everyone buzzing. It's safe to say that Butler knows how to keep things interesting.
But wait, there's more! Damian Lillard, who said he'd play for the Miami Heat, was traded from his longtime home, the Portland Trailblazers, to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team deal involving the Phoenix Suns. The drama was real, and you can read all about it here.
James Harden and Darryl Morey Feud
Speaking of drama, James Harden and longtime GM Darryl Morey had a falling out. These two have been thick as thieves since their Houston Rockets days, but things took a turn when Harden opted into a two-year contract with the apparent that he would be traded after signing. The trade never happened, and now Harden is on a spree of calling Morey a liar and is unlikely to play. Check out the details here.
Whether you're a basketball fanatic or just love the juicy off-court stories, this season promises something for everyone. Stay tuned here at Last Night's Game for more updates as the season unfolds!
