Monday Minute: Ted Lasso’s Back, US Open Begins + Paralympics Begins

We’re here to kickstart your week with all the best sports conversation starters. Why talk about politics when you can dive into the excitement of sports? Let's get into it!

Ted Lasso Fans, Rejoice!

Great news for all the Ted Lasso fans—Season 4 has officially been greenlit! Yes, you read that right. The beloved show will return with most of the main cast, promising more heartwarming comedy and life lessons from our favorite football (soccer) coach. So get ready for another season of feel-good moments and motivational quotes.

College Football Week Zero: Underdog Triumphs

This past weekend brought some surprising upsets in college football during Week Zero. Montana State, a team from the FCS (think Division 2), was paid $360,000 to play against New Mexico (an FBS team, think Division 1). It was supposed to be an easy win for New Mexico, but Montana State had other plans. They pulled off a stunning comeback, overcoming a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure a historic win. It’s a great reminder that anything can happen in sports!

Little League World Series Thrills

The Little League World Series wrapped up yesterday in dramatic fashion. A Lake Mary, Florida team won the championship against Chinese Taipei with a walk-off bunt play. If you’re unfamiliar, a "walk-off" means the game-winning run was scored, ending the game immediately—much like a last-second buzzer-beater in basketball. The intense finish left fans on the edge of their seats!

Major League Baseball Makes History

Here’s a quirky story for you: How can a player be on both teams in the same game? Tonight, Danny Jansen is set to make history as the first MLB player to ever play for both teams in the same game. Earlier this year, on June 26th, Jansen was at bat for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Boston Red Sox when the game was suspended due to rain. Fast forward to today, and Jansen has since been traded to the Red Sox. When asked if Jansen would be in the lineup, Boston manager Alex Cora replied, "Yeah, he's catching. Let's make history." It’s a fun twist that you don’t see every day!

US Open Kicks Off Today

The US Open, the final tennis major of the year, starts today in New York City. Known for its lively atmosphere and late-night matches (no curfew here!), the US Open always brings excitement. With a total prize pool of $75 million—a 15% increase from last year—it’s the highest prize money among the four Grand Slams of 2024. The singles champions will each walk away with a whopping $3.6 million!

Aaron Judge’s Big Week

New York Yankees’ star Aaron Judge continues to make headlines. Recently, he became the fastest player to reach 300 home runs and joined an elite group of players to hit 50 home runs in a season. But that’s not all—Judge is also appearing on Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol today in a special episode. From record-breaking moments to guest appearances on a popular kids' show, it’s been a big week for Judge!
