Providing their state with a much needed pick me up after Hurricane Lane, the team from Hawaii beat the South Korean team to claim the title of Little League Baseball World Series Champions. Last season, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton led his team to a big victory over the Baltimore Ravens (NFL – National Football League). That win couldn’t save his Bengals postseason dreams but it allowed the Buffalo Bills to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. In gratitude, Bills fans donated $450,000 to Dalton’s charity. This weekend during his first game back in Buffalo, Dalton turned the tables and made a $450,000 donation to the Roswell Park Cancer Center in downtown Buffalo, earning him a standing ovation from the Bills' fans. 1. The finalists for the award are:
Baker Mayfield, senior quarterback from Oklahoma, who is hoping to become the first walk on player to win it.
Lamar Jackson, junior quarterback from University of Louisville, who won last year. (Only one other player has won twice).
Bryce Love, junior running back from Stanford, who ranks at the top of the nation despite an ankle injury this season.
FYI – Mayfield is the favorite to win.
2. As if they didn’t work out hard enough to get to the Heisman ceremony, the winner will have to hoist the bronze trophy weighing 45 pounds. They've carried the weight of their team, so this should be no problem.
3. The winner is chosen by over 870 media members, in addition to a vote from every former Heisman winner, 58 currently. There is one vote from the fans for a total of 929 votes. Wonder if Lamar Jackson voted for himself?
4. All three of this year’s Heisman Trophy finalists play for teams whose primary uniform color is red. Maybe the committee was in the holiday spirit?
5. Old guys rule, except when it comes to the Heisman. A senior hasn't won the award since 2006.

- Line makers are the individuals who set the point spread for the event. Yes, they’re humans. For example, in a casino sportsbook they determine the numbers by minimizing risk and maximizing the revenue. Hey Vegas wasn’t built on winners.
- As of this publication date, if you want to place your bets on the outcome of individual games it is illegal in all states, besides Nevada. The key word is individual games as other states have sports betting. Intrigued on going down the rabbit hole that is the legality of sports betting? Here’s a start.
- The commissioners of the four major sports (baseball, basketball, football and hockey) have met to discuss legalizing sports betting and there has been some progress. Concerns over fixing games and gambling addiction are some of the reasons legalizing sports betting isn’t an easy decision.
- Online daily fantasy sports, which is considered a skill-based game not gambling, hit a roadblock earlier this year. The two major companies, FanDuel and DraftKings, were severely strapped for cash and that necessitated a merger. The merger deal was ended by an FTC lawsuit.
- A few of the basics on betting:
- If there is a (-) in front of the team, they are favored to win. A (+) means they are the underdogs.
- The bigger the number is behind the (-), the less money you win.
- If you want to place an uncomplicated bet, go with the over/under. That’s when the total points between the two teams will either be greater (over) or less than (under) the projected total.
