A glass of fine wine and announcer Jim Nantz have something in common. They’re both smooth and are likely to put you to sleep (in a good way in Nantz's case) after consuming for an hour or two. Nantz, the soothing voice of the Masters and NFL on CBS, is behind the Healdsburg, CA winery The Calling. Also known for their time on the golf course and in the wine world are veteran golfers Ernie Els (Ernie Els Wines) and Greg Norman (Greg Norman Estates). LeBron James doesn’t shy away from his admiration for wine (or apparently tequila) and neither do retired NBA players Dwyane Wade and Yao Ming. Ming is one of the tallest ever to play the game and the Shanghai native is fully invested in his St. Helena, California vineyard. However, Yao Family Wines aren’t your daily drinkers at around $100+ a bottle. Dwyane Wade’s brand, Wade Cellars, resides in Napa Valley. This weekend's storyline should be the big playoff wins, but those wins were overshadowed by not one but two starting quarterbacks leaving their respective games with concussions. Both Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) and Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) were ruled out of the game with concussions, but in Mahomes’ case, his team prevailed and took home the win. Jackson’s team lost to the Buffalo Bills. TOUGH WAY TO LOSE
Overtime
Late last year, a delegation of NBA (National Basketball Association) players met with Pope Francis at his request to discuss their individual and collective efforts addressing social and economic injustice and inequality occurring in their communities. Pope Francis honored them for their work demanding social justice. The Atlanta Hawks made sure to send Pope Francis a custom version of their MLK Nike City Edition Jerseys. With the help of UPS, His Holiness received the jersey, blessed it and signed it. The Hawks will wear those blessed special edition jerseys that honor Martin Luther King Jr. when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. BETTER TOGETHER

The Buffalo Bills may have hardcore fans, but they have big hearts. After their team beat Lamar Jackson, who left the game with a concussion, and his Ravens, donations poured in from Bills fans to Jackson’s favorite charity, Blessings in a Backpack. As of this morning, more than $290,000 has been donated to the organization that provides food to kids over the weekend.
This isn’t the first time Bills fans made donations in honor of an opponent. In 2017, Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton made a huge play that sent the Bills to the playoffs for the first time in 17 seasons. The fans donated more than $415,000 for the Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation as a thank you. The Daltons then paid it forward and made a significant donation to a Buffalo hospital. We’re a few weeks away from the start of the NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) season and the racing league gave us a little extra surprise to get us excited. Pitbull joins Michael Jordan on the list of big-named celebrities to buy into NASCAR. Armando Perez, aka Pitbull, celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday with the announcement that he joined Trackhouse as a co-owner. Their driver Daniel Suarez will drive the No. 99 car in the NASCAR Cup Series. The season starts with the Daytona 500 on February 14. TIME OF OUR LIVES
What to watch
In the battle between the oldest quarterbacks in the NFL, Tom Brady and his Buccaneers prevailed over Drew Brees and his Saints. Before the game, Brees announced that he was retiring and that the playoff game would be his last in the Saints home stadium. The sweet moment came after the game where there’s a video of Brady and Brees hanging out on the field with Brees family and Brady throws a touchdown pass to one of Brees’ kids. A MUST SEE MOMENT

Tonight’s Friday night lights bring us a different kind of football tonight with the start of the MLS playoffs in a COVID world. With a compressed schedule, MLS will do everything in their power to reschedule a game where one or both teams is suffering from a COVID outbreak but it could result in a forfeit of the game and therefore the team would exit the postseason (it’s a single-elimination tournament). The Sporting Kansas City and Philadelphia Union are both ranked No. 1 in their respective conferences but it’s anyone’s guess who will end up in the finals on December 12. Kevin Durant (Phil. Union) is one of the star-studded athletes and celebrities to have an ownership stake in an MLS team. SIDE HUSTLE

Don’t get us wrong, we all wish COVID would go away but the wife of Detroit Lions (NFL - National Football League) quarterback Matt Stafford took to social media to share her displeasure with the rules in place. In Kelly Stafford’s Instagram life story she said “I'm over living in a dictatorship we call Michigan.” The rant comes days after Michigan implemented new rules including taking school and work virtual. She later apologized for the use of the word dictatorship and praised healthcare workers. RUBBED PEOPLE THE WRONG WAY

There’s nothing like quality family time on the golf course but how about doing it for your share of $1M? Tiger Woods announced that he and his son Charlie, 11, will be battling it out against John Daly and 18 other legendary golfers (think Greg Norman, David Duval and Jim Furyk) and a member of their family in the PNC Championship on December 17. Wednesday night was a big night for the Ball family. First, the youngest of the three basketball brothers, LaMelo Ball was the third selection in the NBA (National Basketball Association) Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. (Michael Jordan is an owner and chairman of the Hornets). And SPOILER ALERT older brother, Lonzo Ball who plays for the New Orleans Pelicans, was unveiled as the whatchamacallit on the “Masked Singer.” Like a man to man defense, actor Ken Jeong nailed it when he said it was Ball, who is also a rapper on the side.
