Five Things You Need To Know About the Masters

1. The Masters security team has a list of banned sayings and if any spectator shouts one of them, they’ll be removed immediately from the course. One of the banned phrases? Dilly Dilly. Bud Light had a stellar response to the ban of their fan favorite phrase.

2. Despite the prestige of the course, the food is cheap with everything under $3 and beer for $5. We’ll drink to that. The most famous item on the menu? The pimento cheese sandwich. In case you want to make one at home while watching the tourney, here’s the recipe.

3. The Tiger Woods factor is strong in this year’s tournament. The four-time winner is back and according to Vegas oddsmakers, is the favorite to win (although many in the golf world disagree with this). Since his return this season, TV ratings have been up and there’s an additional buzz around the sport. He may have an uphill challenge to win, but he’s certainly bringing additional fanfare to the game.

4. Whether you’re a journalist or a patron, there is a strict no cell phone policy at Augusta National, the home of the Masters. Don’t even try it as getting caught will land you a lifetime ban from the tournament. 

5. The famed green jacket became a tradition in 1949.  Members of the club decided on green so fans in attendance at the tournament could spot them in case they had questions. Last year’s winner, Sergio Garcia, took advantage of owning the esteemed jacket, wearing it to his wedding, Wimbledon and the New York Stock Exchange. (He also named his newborn daughter Azalea after the famed flowers at Augusta).

MLB (Major League Baseball)

• #HoustonStrong. Finally, some great news for Houston. For the first time in 16 years, the Houston Astros have won their division. The team will take the top spot for their division (American League West) in the playoffs, which starts in October.

NFL (National Football League)

• This town ain’t big enough. It’s been a rough start for Los Angeles and their two new NFL teams – the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers. Lackluster game attendance has been the butt of many jokes and this weekend's games didn't help. The combined attendance for both the Rams and Chargers games was less than the total attendance for the USC (University of Southern California) game.

Overtime

• Supporting the “Drive for Teal & Gold” campaign, 29 NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) drivers will utilize teal and gold steering wheels during the month of September. Drivers will raise awareness and funds for ovarian and childhood cancers. The effort is spearheaded by driver Martin Truex Jr. (who won yesterday's race) and his partner Sherry, an ovarian cancer survivor.

Sideline stat

• For the third time ever, four quarterbacks from the same college started in the NFL on Sunday and they’re not from the big powerhouse school you might think. They all bleed red and blue as former players from North Carolina State.

Coaches’ corner

• The much-anticipated boxing match between Gennady Gennadyevich Glolovkin (aka GGG) and Canelo Alvarez lived up the hype with nonstop action for 12 rounds. It all came down to the judges to declare the winner. They took the easy way out and declared it a draw (i.e. a tie). The sports world lost its mind calling the fight fixed. Only time will tell.

NFL (National Football League)

• Not looking good. Week two is pivotal in the NFL because teams that lose their first two games are unlikely to make the playoffs. (Only 12% of the teams with that losing record actually make it to the playoffs). So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

F1 Racing (Formula One Racing)

• Break free. The F1 circuit is stopping in Singapore for the only full night race of the season. The stars come out for the race and the after party. While Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton hopes to take home the checkered flag, the post-race fun will feature Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande and The Chainsmokers.

Boxing

• Here we go again. Friends, we have another boxing match for you. This fight doesn’t have the same level of pomp and circumstance as Mayweather – McGregor but it’s one of the best boxing match ups in years. Canelo Alvarez will take on Gennady “GGG” Golovkin on Saturday night in Las Vegas, NV. Alvarez has only lost once in his career and GGG has never lost. Here’s how the experts think it’ll turn out.

Overtime

• Who wants to be a NHL (National Hockey League) goalie? The role with the Los Angeles Kings could be yours. The NHL requires each home team to have an emergency goalie in the stands for every game and the team thought it would be fun to ask the citizens of L.A. to apply. Apply now. 

Sideline stat

• The Cleveland Indians just keep winning. They won their 22nd consecutive game last night, claiming the modern era record for games won in a row. (The 1916 New York Giants hold the overall record at 26). Check out fellow Ohio sportsman LeBron James’ congratulatory message.

Coaches’ corner

• Did you know that Los Angeles was originally competing with Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics? For being a good sport and taking 2028 instead, L.A. saved "tens of millions of dollars" in International Olympic Committee fees and will receive a $180 million advance. Cha-ching!
