World Cup

When you’re on top of the world. At what’s being called “the best World Cup ever,” the second youngest team in the tournament, France, defeated Croatia to take home the country’s second ever World Cup. Earlier in the weekend, Belgium beat England to claim third place. MATCH REPORT

Overtime

The players weren’t the only ones having fun at the World Cup. French President Emmanuel Macron celebrated the win by learning how to “dab” alongside his French players. Also enjoying the fun? Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. Sporting her team’s jersey, she flew in economy class and sat with the fans during the games, before being invited into the VIP box. It was a weekend of firsts for some athletes. Angelique Kerber beat Serena Williams to win her first Wimbledon title. Williams became emotional after her second place finish, saying she was playing for “all the moms out there.” Speaking of moms, model Kate Upton announced that she and her husband, Houston Astros (MLB) pitcher Justin Verlander, are expecting their first child in an Instagram post using the hashtag #PregnantInMiami. Glad she clarified it wasn’t a #foodbaby. MODEL MOM

Coaches’ corner

After both playing in brutally long semifinal matches, Novak Djokovic beat Kevin Anderson in the men’s finals at Wimbledon. With the win, Djokovic wins his 13th Grand Slam title but his three-year-old son is the one who stole the show. #WINNING

If you dig the long ball then tonight is your night. MLB’s (Major League Baseball) All-Star celebration starts tonight in Washington, D.C. with the fan favorite home run derby. When you’re twinning at the office. LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers channeled a group of high school girls and wore matching outfits on Friday. The team arrived to the game in matching grey suits on Friday and still lost. On Sunday, they figured they’d try their luck again and wore matching black suits and won. SEE IT

When they doubt you and you prove them wrong. Shocking the world, the New Orleans Pelicans swept the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs. Why is this surprising? All of the 22 ESPN analysts picked the Blazers to win. Don’t worry the Pelicans didn’t let anyone forget their erroneous choice. Damn straight. READ

His team may have won the World Series last season and he may be married to one of the most beautiful women in the world, model/actress Kate Upton, but that doesn’t mean life is perfect for Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander (MLB - Major League Baseball). His team still has its haters but he turned the tables on a heckling fan by holding up a “no you suck” sign during the game. That’s right, kick ‘em where it counts. CHECK IT OUT

Zero – the number of hits recorded by the red-hot Boston Red Sox in Saturday’s Oakland A’s vs. Red Sox game (MLB). A’s pitcher Sean Manaea became the newest member of the exclusive club of pitchers to throw a no hitter. The best part of the night? The food-filled postgame celebration. WATCH

The City of Philadelphia is used to their teams winning championships after the Philadelphia Eagles (NFL – National Football League) and Villanova (college basketball) won it all. Therefore, fans weren’t all too happy when their Philadelphia Flyers were eliminated by their in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL (National Hockey League) playoffs. Five Things To Know About The Global Phenomenon of Formula One (F1) Racing

1. Forget the sport, let’s start by talking about the view. The races take place in some of the most picturesque places in the world including the scenic streets of Monaco, the desert of Abu Dhabi and under the lights in Singapore (the only night race). Even if you don’t understand the racing, it’s worth it to watch for the postcard worthy scenery. The only race in America is in Austin, TX. The season starts this Sunday in Melbourne, Australia. 2. F1 has always been a global sport with a massive international following, but expect to see more about F1 in the states because U.S.A. based Liberty Media is now the main stakeholder, buying in at a mere $4.4 billion. There have been talks about expanding the races to other U.S. cities outside of Austin.

3. The cars are designed to be light and fast but there are weight restrictions to make sure every team is on a level playing field. Like going to the doctor’s office in the dead of winter where they weight you with all your clothes on, the car and the drivers, with all of their gear still on, are weighed in at the end of each race to ensure they meet said weight restrictions. The average driver loses 6.5 lbs during a race from dehydration. Do not try this before your at home weigh-in.

4. Last season’s winner and the sport’s most recognizable current driver, Lewis Hamilton, is known for his time behind the wheel, big diamond earrings, his famous ex-girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls) and his Instagram famous bulldogs, Roscoe and Coco, that are raking in the international followers.

5. Unlike your cell phone number, drivers choose their own numbers for their cars. The season’s winner has the right to race in the #1 car during their reign the following season.
