This year brought us some big wins, tragic losses and definitely some memorable moments. When you ring in 2018, here’s what to talk about until the clock strikes midnight.

1. Between three major hurricanes, multiple California fires and a mass shooting, sports teams and players stepped up to support their local communities by donating money and their time. Most notably was Houston Texans JJ Watt (NFL – National Football League) who started a fundraising effort for victims of Hurricane Harvey. He promised to match the first $100,000 raised and ended up raising over $37 million in donations for hurricane relief efforts. MORE
2. After earning the title of the No Fun League, the NFL relaxed their touchdown celebrations rules this year. Players embraced this freedom of expression and have graced us with celebrations to honor the Rockettes, playing leapfrog, a bench press workout and of course a line dance to the electric slide. 3. Like we needed more evidence to prove that Serena Williams is nothing short of Superwoman. In January, she won her record 23rd Grand Slam win at the Australian Open. (A Grand Slam is one of the four major tournaments in tennis). Later she revealed that she was pregnant during her big win. Therefore, this year brought us the birth of her baby girl and her glamorous wedding to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. MORE
4. The hype was worth the hype in the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match. MMA fighter (Mixed Martial Arts) Conor McGregor stepped outside his comfort zone to step into the ring and fight one of boxing’s best, the undefeated Floyd Mayweather. The fight lasted 10 rounds and Mayweather was declared a winner but not before McGregor earned the sports world’s r-e-s-p-e-c-t. MORE
5. This year was a terrible year for the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team. The U.S. team did not qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 31 years. Also having a crappy year? Team Italy. They didn’t qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 58 years. Ciao World Cup dreams.
PS – There are some great things ahead in 2018. Most notably, the College Football National Championship, Super Bowl, Winter Olympics and World Cup all in the first six months of the year.

Insert foot in mouth. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton worked himself into a bit of a pickle at a press conference this week for laughing off a strategy question by a female sports reporter. There has been fierce backlash for dissing the sports talking woman. He has since been dropped by a major sponsor and released an apology video.
MLB (Major League Baseball)
It’s the playoffs baby. Pitcher Justin Verlander (fiancé is actress and model Kate Upton) pitched the Houston Astros to a game one win over the Boston Red Sox in the playoffs. While you pretend to work, there are four playoff baseball games on today starting at 2 pm (EST). SCHEDULE AND RESULTS.
Overtime
If the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight taught us anything, it’s that the money is in the ring. Maybe that’s the motivation for former boxer and grill creator, George Foreman, who challenged martial arts expert turned actor turned law enforcement, Steven Seagal, to a boxing match. What’s next? Jackie Chan vs. The Rock?

We’ve had four weeks of NFL football and there is only one undefeated team left, the Kansas City Chiefs. This weekend they take on the Houston Texans, whose phenom quarterback Deshaun Watson gave his first NFL check to stadium workers impacted by Harvey. NFL SCHEDULE.

To honor the victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, UNLV (University of Nevada – Las Vegas) will wear special helmets during this weekend’s home football game. They will feature a red ribbon and the city’s name instead of the normal logo.

- Not looking good. Week two is pivotal in the NFL because teams that lose their first two games are unlikely to make the playoffs. (Only 12% of the teams with that losing record actually make it to the playoffs). So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

- Break free. The F1 circuit is stopping in Singapore for the only full night race of the season. The stars come out for the race and the after party. While Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton hopes to take home the checkered flag, the post-race fun will feature Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande and The Chainsmokers.
Boxing
- Here we go again. Friends, we have another boxing match for you. This fight doesn’t have the same level of pomp and circumstance as Mayweather – McGregor but it’s one of the best boxing match ups in years. Canelo Alvarez will take on Gennady “GGG” Golovkin on Saturday night in Las Vegas, NV. Alvarez has only lost once in his career and GGG has never lost. Here’s how the experts think it’ll turn out.

- Who wants to be a NHL (National Hockey League) goalie? The role with the Los Angeles Kings could be yours. The NHL requires each home team to have an emergency goalie in the stands for every game and the team thought it would be fun to ask the citizens of L.A. to apply. Apply now.

- The Cleveland Indians just keep winning. They won their 22nd consecutive game last night, claiming the modern era record for games won in a row. (The 1916 New York Giants hold the overall record at 26). Check out fellow Ohio sportsman LeBron James’ congratulatory message.

- Did you know that Los Angeles was originally competing with Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics? For being a good sport and taking 2028 instead, L.A. saved "tens of millions of dollars" in International Olympic Committee fees and will receive a $180 million advance. Cha-ching!
