1. The first New York City Marathon took place in 1970 with 55 runners. Last year more than 100,000 runners applied to run in the race with only 15% accepted. 2. Women were barred from road races for a decade but in the Marathon’s third year, six women took their rightful places in the race. The AAU, the then-governing body of marathons, had previously squashed the idea of women running in marathons. 3. The F1 (Formula One) race takes place in Austin on Sunday . It’s the only F1 race in the U.S. and is known as the “Circuit of the Americas.” And if going fast doesn’t do it for you, each night of racing is followed by a concert. This year’s shows feature P!NK and Imagine Dragons. ROCK ON

F1 has always been a global sport with a massive international following, but expect to see more about F1 in the states because U.S. based Liberty Media is now the main stakeholder, buying in at a mere $4.4 billion. 5. Last season’s overall winner, Lewis Hamilton is looking to win his sixth championship in Austin. 1. P!NK will be singing the national anthem and Justin Timberlake will perform in his third Super Bowl halftime show. Did you know that neither artist receives a paycheck for their performance? The NFL (National Football League) pays for the production and other expenses, which can run upwards of $10 million, but does not pay a performance fee.
2. It’s the tale of two quarterbacks. The New England Patriots’ Tom Brady is the oldest quarterback in the NFL and is looking to win his record sixth Super Bowl ring. In contrast, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles has won two playoff games.
3. Wagering money on the big game is a rite of passage for those over 21. In addition to your typical bets, the Super Bowl is known for it's great prop bets. Some things you can bet on include the color of P!NK’s hair, if a member of NSYNC will perform during the halftime show alongside Justin Timberlake or the color of the liquid thrown on the winning coach.
