SIDELINE STAT

Driver Denny Hamlin (NASCAR – National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) didn’t win a race last season but he made up for it by winning the first race of the new season, the Daytona 500. The race gave us a lot of crashes including one at the very end that wiped out more than half the cars left in the race. In the end, Hamlin prevailed for his second Daytona win in four years. The Carolina Hurricanes (NHL – National Hockey League) have decided to have a little fun at the end of their games. Similar to a football touchdown celebrations, they’ve taken their postgame antics to another level by doing the limbo and human bowling, to name a few. Like everything in life, some fans are elated but the hockey purists are calling them “bunch of jerks.” CAN’T MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY

World Cup

When you instantly become best friends. South Korea stunned the world by beating defending champion Germany and eliminating them from the tournament. The German loss meant Mexico qualified for the next stage of games. The Mexico fans were so grateful to South Korea that one business sent a pallet of Mexican beer (no really) to the South Korean embassy in Washington, D.C. They also celebrated the victory in the streets by drinking tequila with the Korean consul general to Mexico. ¡SALUD!

 

Overtime

Could it be the best basketball movie since “Space Jam?” If you’re tired of the heat and want a laugh, the basketball movie “Uncle Drew” comes out this weekend. Uncle Drew started with a character in a Pepsi commercial starring Boston Celtics (NBA – National Basketball Association) superstar Kyrie Irving. Now it hits the big screen with Irving as the star, along with some help from basketball hall of famers Lisa Leslie and Shaq, to name a few. (Don’t worry this is nothing like Shaq’s starring role in the 90s film Kazaam). RAVE REVIEWS

The World Cup started with 32 teams and now it's down to 16 teams as we enter the “knockout stage” tomorrow. Not to be confused with a Mike Tyson punch, the knockout stage means games cannot end in a tie and the losing team goes home. And yes, there may be dramatic shootouts to determine the winner. Yesterday Senegal was the first team in World Cup history to be eliminated from the tournament by fair points play. They had the exact same record and goal differential as Japan, so the tie breaker was the fact that they had more penalties (red and yellow cards), therefore they had to pack their bags. THE Five Things You Need To Know About The Indy 500

1. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also known as the Brickyard. It’s called the Brickyard because the track used to be made of bricks, which are still exposed under the asphalt at the start-finish line. It’s a tradition for the drivers to kiss these bricks before the race. We cannot confirm or deny if that’s where cold sores come from.

2. Kelly Clarkson has been a busy woman coming off the season finale of The Voice and host of the Billboard Music Awards. She’ll be at the Indy 500 this weekend serenading the crowd with her rendition of the national anthem.  

3. So long, farewell to Danica Patrick. While she was a NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) for the past seven years, she will return to her roots in IndyCar for the last race of her driving career. She holds the record for the highest Indy finish for a woman (third place) and is the only female driver to lead laps at both the Indy 500 and Daytona 500 (NASCAR race). 4. Move over Gatorade, milk is the drink of Indy 500 winners. The tradition, which involves chugging milk from a glass bottle after a win, began in 1936 with driver Louis Meyer. 5. Indiana Jones may hate snakes but the snake pit is the place to be over Indy weekend. The snake pit is in the infield of the race track (which also boasts a golf course) and concerts goers can enjoy EDM (electronic dance music) concerts all weekend. Grab your glow sticks! SCHEDULE
