1. The year kicks off with a Super Bowl show that will have everyone dancing. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will give the halftime show a little Latin flare when they take the stage in Miami on February 2. (We also look forward the royal wedding of JLo and her baseball beau Alex Rodriguez in 2020. The only hint we have from ARod is that the nuptial destination is “going to be a long flight." WHENEVER, WHEREVER

2. Expect to see baby Archie in the stands for the 2020 Invictus Games in The Hauge, The Netherlands in May. Inspired after visiting the Warrior Games in the U.S., Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014. The Games are an international sporting event for injured servicemen and women. Competitors hail from allied nations and are all active duty and veteran service members who have been become ill or injured during or as a direct consequence of their service. The games became a biennial event in 2018. ROYALLY EXCITED

3. Konnichiwa friendly competition, the Summer Olympics will begin on July 24 in Tokyo, Japan. Unlike many host countries, everything seems to be on track. The stadium that will house the opening and closing ceremony, along with track and field and soccer was dedicated mid-December. Speaking of soccer, watch out for the U.S. Women’s team which looks to take home gold. Their star Alex Morgan will return to the field, just three months after giving birth to her first child. Keep an eye on gymnast Simone Biles, snowboarder possibly turned skateboarder Shaun White and baseball and softball which are on the dance card for the first time in 12 years. GAME ON

4. One of the more obscure sporting events, the World Nomad Games, will take place in Turkey in August. Founded in 2014, the games are designed to celebrate the nomadic heritage of the Central Asian nations (although it has expanded as the U.S. and several African countries have a team). The goal is to show the world "the greatness of nomadic civilization" and to promote the revival and preservation of the historical heritage of nomadic people. Don’t look for soccer and basketball medals here, but more like sports that include hunting with eagles, bone throwing and archery and wrestling on a horse. One of the most popular sports is kok-buru, where two teams of horsemen attempt to push a headless goat into a goal. Think polo with a dead goat. MEMORABLE FOR SURE

5. Professional football is headed to sin city. In the spring, while you’re placing your bets, owners of NFL teams will be doing the same when the city hosts the NFL Draft in April. Then the Las Vegas Raiders (at the end of the season they will be formerly known as the Oakland Raiders) will start the season in the fall in their new home just off the strip in Las Vegas. They will be the first NFL team to call Vegas home. (The city is home to an NHL (National Hockey League) team – the Vegas Golden Knights). ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET

1. Clearly one of the most talked about sports moments of the year, even the decade, is the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s back-to-back World Cup wins. This year’s team turned their win from a moment into a movement, using the victory as a platform to elevate the inequities in the workplace for women. After facing their own pay dispute battle, they’ve seen how their world stage can have a larger sense of purpose. (Oh and did we mention the team’s jerseys became the highest-selling soccer shirts in Nike’s history)? STANDING UP FOR CHANGE

2. One word – Tiger. His April win at the Masters had the country on the edge of their seats. His comeback victory ended an 11-year drought since his last championship and it was sweet. REDEMPTION

3. We didn’t think there were any records left for gymnast Simone Biles to break and she went and proved us wrong. She landed a gravity defying triple-double to win her record sixth U.S. Gymnastics Championship national all-around title. The move, now called the “Biles,” consists of two flips and three twists. TO THINK, WE GET CONFUSED ORDERING A LATTE WITH MORE THAN ONE SHOT

4. Canadians proved they don’t have a one-track hockey mind, rallying around their Toronto Raptors as they won their first NBA (National Basketball Association) title. With superfan Drake as the president of the fan club, the Raptors became the first team based in or originating in Canada to win an NBA title. They also made history with the biggest championship rings ever. WE THE NORTH

5. It was the sign that made everyone laugh and then paid off big time. Carson King held up a sign during “College GameDay” asking viewers to Venmo him money for Busch Light. After a huge response, King decided to do something for good with the money. The beer company and Venmo matched donations and they ended up raising a ton of money for a children’s hospital in Iowa. Even though the story has a happy ending, it went off course in the middle. A reporter dug up tweets King posted when he was a teenager that caused Busch to cut ties with an apologetic King. In the end, the 24-year-old still raised over $3 million for the children’s hospital. YOU LIVE, YOU LEARN, YOU HELP OTHERS

'Tis The Season - It's Time For College Football Bowl Game Season

1. If the Oscars have the most coveted swag bags, bowl games are a close second. Players cannot be paid to play in the games but they can take home some great loot valued up to but not exceeding $550. Gifts this year include a cowboy hat, a life-sized decal for each participant of his likeness, a GoPro and for the first time ever at the Idaho Potato Bowl, fanny packs. TOUCHDOWN IN THE GIFT DEPARTMENT

2. What’s in a name? Well for bowl games, it’s big money. The committees will do just about anything to please their title sponsors including naming the game itself something odd. The most memorable bowl game names this season roll off the tongue like the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, Cheez-It Bowl, Taxslayer Bowl and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. And yes, there used to be a game called the Salad Bowl. HOW LONG UNTIL WE HAVE THE SMOKE-A BOWL?

3. Unless a player is playing in the national championship game, families cannot receive any financial assistance to travel to a bowl game, per NCAA rules. This year Heisman Trophy finalist from Ohio State, Chase Young, was suspended for taking a loan from a family friend to fly his girlfriend out to the Rose Bowl game in early 2019. WANNA GET AWAY?

4. Not all teams are invited to a bowl game. A team has to have a .500-plus record to be considered bowl eligible. The TV exposure, additional revenue and chance at a title all come with a price tag – winning. NO PARTICIPATION TROPHIES HERE

5. The top four teams in the country will play each other on Saturday, January 28 in either the Fiesta Bowl (Glendale, AZ) or the Peach Bowl (Atlanta). The winner of those two games will play each other in the National Championship Game on January 13. The other bowl games are for pride and money for the program, but will not impact a team’s overall rating. BOWLED OVER

Some NFL (National Football League) team’s cheer coaches conduct “jiggle tests” to assess the firmness of the cheerleaders’ bodies during the season and if they don’t pass the test, they’re benched. They also on average make under $10/hour. With practices, appearances and games they put in 30-40 hour weeks during the season but most are required to have a full-time job elsewhere. Want more? The game everyone is anticipating is this weekend between the biggest rivals in sports, the Ohio State Buckeyes – Michigan Wolverines. Why does this game matter so much? Well Ohio State is undefeated and holding the number two spot at the top of the college football rankings. No one would love to ruin their party more than Michigan. The 5 Things You Never Knew About NFL Cheerleaders

1. If you become an NFL (National Football League) cheerleader, you’re not doing it for the money. On average, they make under $10/hour and with practices, appearances and games they put in 30-40 hour weeks during the season. For the most part, they are not reimbursed for money spent maintaining their team defined appearance. (Think coloring their hair, uniforms, makeup, etc). Cheerleaders are often required to have another full-time job or be a full-time student. (Yes, being a mother does count as a full-time job in this case). There have been a multitude of lawsuits against teams over their pay and some teams have settled but in the case of the Buffalo Bills, they disbanded their cheer squad all together. SEEKING THE SILVER LINING

2. The NFL’s most famous pom-pom wielding gals, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, have a vigorous application process that includes a written test with questions like “Name a member of Trump’s cabinet? or “How many yards are assessed for a personal foul penalty?” In fact, a few years back ESPN talked 12 Cowboys players into taking the test and…they failed.  BRAINS AND BEAUTY

3. The cheerleaders are required to maintain a certain look (see above) because if they don't they can be benched without pay for violating their contract. Some team’s cheer coaches conduct “jiggle tests” to assess the firmness of the cheerleader's bodies during the season and if they don’t pass the test, they’re benched. Others have a height to weight ratio requirement, with the intention of making sure the cheerleaders do not become too skinny. (NOT) BODY POSITIVE

4. While there are six NFL teams without cheerleaders - Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers – the Los Angeles Rams broke down barriers by having two male cheerleaders on their Super Bowl squad last season. SHARING THE SIDELINE

5. Hitting the film festival scene is “A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem.” The film follows the league’s "general insensitivity toward women" and the lawsuits over low pay (crediting the NFL’s greed). The Compelling Stories Behind 5 NBA Teams' Flashy New Uniforms

To clear things up (and by that we mean make them as clear as mud) teams have an association, icon, city, statement and classic edition uniforms. PLAYING DRESS UP

1. The Oklahoma City Thunder are remembering those who lost their lives in the Oklahoma City bombing this year, the 25th anniversary of the tragic event. The uniform, which will debut on November 27, will feature the times 9:01 am and 9:03 am, the time of the bombing and the time the healing started. They will also showcase an image of the 90-year old Survivor Tree that’s on site of the memorial as well as the words “Service,” “Honor” and “Kindness,” to remember how the nation reacted to the tragedy. BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE

2. The Brooklyn Nets are not only unveiling new graffiti-print statement uniforms that reflect the gritty, earthy and gray nature of their home turf but they’ve also redone the court as well. The actual basketball court in the arena is inspired by the subway system. The court itself is gray to emulate the subway and the team’s name is in the traditional Helvetica font that’s used for all train station signs. IT’S ONLY AUTHENTIC NYC SUBWAY IF IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE URINE

3. If you’ve ever been to Atlanta, you’ve likely crossed Peachtree Street at some point. The iconic street is prominent on this year’s city uniforms for the Atlanta Hawks and the team’s special edition “peachier” court. The uniform and the court will feature the peachtree logo (picture a peach crossed with a basketball) and of course, the color peach. WELL ISN’T THAT JUST PEACHY?

4. The Los Angeles Clippers acquired a few big name players in the off-season so we already knew the players on the court would look different but they took it a step further. Their new hardwood court is embracing the black and white design of the city edition uniforms, and the design is predominately black, minus a white map of Los Angeles. Some are saying these uniforms remind them of the Los Angeles (soon to be Las Vegas) Raiders (NFL – National Football League). Others are saying they remind them of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Regardless, the team will wear them 17 times this season, starting with November 22. EVERYONE’S A CRITIC

5. The Golden State Warriors have had a tough start to the season but they’re still celebrating the places they called home in their uniforms. On November 22, they’ll debut their city classic edition uniforms which will pay tribute to when the team was based in San Francisco back in the 60s (They moved to Oakland and have since moved back to San Francisco). This uniform look dates back to the Wilt Chamberlain days and will feature a cable car and the Golden Gate Bridge. BUT WILL THERE BE WILT-STYLE SHORT SHORTS ON THE COURT?

The 5 Things You Need To Know Ahead Of College Basketball Season

1. Remind me where we left off? Last season, Virginia won its first championship title in school history. In the off-season head coach Tony Bennett (not to be confused with Grammy award winning Tony Bennett) turned down a big raise, insisting it instead go to his assistant coaches and improving the school. (FYI - Michigan State is the favorite this season). APPARENTLY NICE GUYS DO FINISH FIRST

2. Baylor took home the championship on the women’s side last season. But the player to watch has nothing to do with the school in Texas but one in the northwest. Sabrina Ionescu from the Oregon Ducks is undoubtedly the best player in women’s college basketball and dare we say, best in college basketball. Last year she broke records but decided to forgo being the likely #1 pick in the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) draft to return to school in Oregon. SMART AND TALENTED

3. The conversation of paying college athletes is unavoidable and the NCAA (governing body of college football) recognizes that a change needs to happen. You might remember that they gave the directive for each division in college sports to look into what the rules and structure might be to pay athletes. These rules aren’t due until 2021 so until then, it’s all lip service. But while athletes aren’t getting paid, their coaches are. And they’re getting paid well. PUT ME IN COACH

4. If inspiration is more of what you’re looking for, look no further than Andrew Jones from Texas. The Longhorn was the team’s best player when he diagnosed with leukemia. He missed most of last season for treatment, but Is expected to take the court this season alongside his teammates. FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

5. If you want to be in the know about what's happening on the court, the big rule change for the season is the moving of the three-point line. This season it will be moved back to the international basketball distance, which is still closer than the NBA (National Basketball Association) line. We’ll see if it’s a game changer. HOOP DREAMS

1. The first New York City Marathon took place in 1970 with 55 runners. Last year more than 100,000 runners applied to run in the race with only 15% accepted. That acceptance rate is lower than most elite colleges. 2. Women were barred from road races for a decade but in the Marathon’s third year, six women took their rightful places in the race. The AAU, the then-governing body of marathons, had previously squashed the idea of women running in marathons. 3. The F1 (Formula One) race takes place in Austin on Sunday . It’s the only F1 race in the U.S. and is known as the “Circuit of the Americas.” And if going fast doesn’t do it for you, each night of racing is followed by a concert. This year’s shows feature P!NK and Imagine Dragons. ROCK ON

F1 has always been a global sport with a massive international following, but expect to see more about F1 in the states because U.S. based Liberty Media is now the main stakeholder, buying in at a mere $4.4 billion. 1. The Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros are playing in the 115th World Series. The Nationals are hoping to win their first ever franchise World Series and the Astros are striving for their second title win after winning their franchise first in 2017. The Astros are favored to win but the Nationals were fighters all season, so it’s anyone’s guess. (At the time of publication the Nationals are up 1-0 in the series).  YOU'LL NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST

2. There are a lot of good luck charms that have come into play for the Washington Nationals, who started off the season in the dumps (19-31 to be exact). Luck came in the form of the song "Baby Shark" and a four-legged friend. First, Gerardo Parra changed his walk-up song for his son to the song we all love to hate, "Baby Shark." He broke out of a hitless slump and the song became a rally cry for the team. Then there’s Ryan Zimmerman, who adopted a dog named ‘lucky’ Penny before the postseason and they went on to crush it after that. UNDERDOGS DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO

3. While the regular season saw balls fly out of the park at a record rate, this series is not likely to reflect that because these two teams boast some of the best pitchers in the league. When it comes to hitters at the plate, keep in mind that when the games are in an American League ballpark (Houston Astros’ stadium) both teams will play with a designated hitter (DH), a batter specifically designated to hit in the place of the pitcher. When the teams play at the home of the Nationals, the designated hitter won’t exist as the National League does not play with a DH. A pitcher has to hit. WHO DOESN'T WANT TO CALL IN A SUBSTITUTE SOMETIMES? 

4. Your medical terminology for the day - Heterochromia iridis. That’s the condition that causes Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer to have two different color eyes. One is blue and the other is brown. THE EYES HAVE IT

5. Who says you have to be big and burly to be a professional athlete? Well, whoever did has never met Jose Altuve. Altuve is the Astros second baseman and has been the hero of the postseason. And he stands at 5’6.” Besides who needs to be big when your big, burly athlete friends in the Houston area have your back? The other Houston teams are in full support of their baseball team with players from the Houston Rockets (NBA – National Basketball Association) and Houston Texans (NFL – National Football League) supporting the team from the stands throughout the playoffs. Texans player J.J. Watt made the official “Play Ball!” call before last night’s game. STAND AS ONE

1. The most exciting part about this upcoming NBA season (unless you’re a Warriors fan) is that there is no guarantee that Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors are going to dominate like in the past. Eyes will be on quite a few teams including the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers, which have made some major moves in the off-season and the Toronto Raptors will be defending their first championship title from last season. UP FOR GRABS

2. A big focus this season for the league is on the players’ mental health throughout the grind of the season. The league’s mental health and wellness program requires teams to have 1-2 mental health professionals available to players in addition to a psychologist and have a written plan for emergencies along with a confidentiality plan. Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kevin Love has long been open about his mental struggles in the league including panic attacks during games and has been an advocate for transparency when talking about mental health. SPEAKING OUT AND STANDING UP

3. Love it or hate it, instant replay has taken over the NFL (National Football League) and NBA fans will now get a taste of it. In a one year trial, the NBA will implement instant replay, allowing coaches to have one challenge and allow the NBA Replay Center to trigger instant replay in certain situations. One thing you won’t see on instant replay? Branded tattoos. The league has put a kibosh on players repping any brands during games (yes players have tattooed corporate logos on their bodies) besides the league approved ones. KEEPING AN EYE ON YOU 

4. NBA players are just like you in that they lack sleep too. Between boarding flights after late night games and arriving in the next city in the wee hours of the morning, to back-to-back-to-back travels days, fatigue is a real problem in the league. In a less than six month season, teams will travel 50,000 miles, roughly 20,000 more miles than NFL teams cover in a season. That’s enough miles to circle the globe twice. 5. The guy everyone is excited about is Zion Williamson. While he has never played a minute in the NBA, the #1 draft pick not only has New Orleans Pelicans fans on the edge of their seats but the world. Only time will tell how his rookie season will pan out. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Bonus - Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about the already complicated relationship between the NBA and China that was rocked by a tweet. Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted his support for Hong Kong and the ramifications have been extremely complicated and harsh, including teams planning for a possible drop in salary cap if the relationship between the two completely sours. 2. A tradition at Murray State since the late 70s, a horse nicknamed Racer One runs a lap around the field at home games after a touchdown. This tradition also comes to you from the school where after couples DTR, they hang their shoes on the Shoe Tree for luck. SOLE MATES

3. After their rival Georgia Tech discontinued their annual game, Clemson Tigers fans hit back with their wallets. They spent $2 bills stamped with the team’s signature orange tiger paw logo all over Atlanta. This 40-year tradition still remains, with Clemson fans paying with said $2 bills when traveling to away games. WAIT, SOMEONE CARRIES CASH? 

4. Florida State University began a “sod cemetery” back in 1962. The team would bring back grass from their opponent’s field after a win. But now there are new rules in place. The Seminoles must be underdogs or the victory must be in a championship or bowl game to warrant a sod funeral.  REST IN PEACE

5. A tradition nearly 100 years in the making is arriving via boat for a Washington Huskies football game. Then fans relive their spring break by boatgating. They party on boats and like any other tailgate there are ping pong tables, grills, TVs and of course plenty to drink. BUT WILL THERE BE SKINNY DIPPING?

1. While you may have never considered watching the Rugby World Cup, you should because it’s a worldwide phenomenon that’s more popular than the Super Bowl (but we doubt it has better commercials). Around 98.2 million people watched this year’s Super Bowl and the last Rugby World Cup final drew an audience of 120 million. The tournament in Japan runs from September 20 - November 2, 2019. THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING

2. This tournament is nothing new – it started in 1987. This is the first time it has been hosted by an Asian nation and the crowds have been massive. Japan stockpiled beer and booze to accommodate the massive crowds, as many were worried that the rowdy rugby crowds would deplete the stash. We can guarantee you there are a lot of fans “shooting the boot” aka a “shoey.” Translated that means drinking a beer out of a cleat (sometimes a used one). CLEAT CULTURE

3. There are 20 teams representing 20 nations in the tournament that leads up to the big final game, where players play for the “Webb Ellis Cup,” the trophy that is name for the presumed creator of rugby. Unlike the FIFA World Cup (soccer) the country’s rugby associations pay the participants, not a bigger international organization (like FIFA). CASHING IN

4. Unlike the Women’s Soccer World Cup the United States is not the team to watch, although there’s certainly reason to believe that they’ll be a competitor in the not so distant future. Keep an eye on the defending champion All Blacks from New Zealand. The All Blacks always put top talent on the field and if anything, watch them for their pre-game haka dance. It’s the ultimate in ancestral intimidation. LIKE NOTHING YOU’VE EVER SEEN BEFORE

5. The Women’s Rugby World Cup happens every four years as well, with the next one taking place in New Zealand in 2021. The tournament in 2021 will be without gender identifiers and will be simply known as the ‘Rugby World Cup 2021.’ World Rugby is the first major sports federation to do away with gender from the competition title. 1. Something new to keep an eye out for this season is the new patch on your team’s jerseys. The newest addition celebrates the 150th season of college football. What’s not new? The fact that you can’t sport a jersey of your favorite college football player. The NCAA (the governing body of college sports) stopped selling clothing with players’ last names and/or numbers in 2013 after being accused of trying to make money off of notable college athletes. (Remember, college athletes can’t be paid). NOT COMING TO A STORE NEAR YOU

2. Modest is hottest in college football. A few years ago, the NCAA banned players from wearing crop tops like a 1992 Right Said Fred video. (Ironically today is National One Hit Wonder Day). Players were tucking their jerseys under their pads to make it harder for their opponents to tackle them. SHOWING OFF OUR SIX PACK (OF BEER) 

3. Arizona State will be wearing new “selfless” Adidas uniforms this season. The new unis will be made of sustainable Econyl Yarn and be accompanied by cleats made from recycled materials. The University of Miami was the first ever football team to support an environmentally friendly look last season when they debuted uniforms made from recycled ocean waste. LOOKING GOOD FOR MOTHER EARTH 

4. The early football uniforms were heavily inspired by rugby. The first football helmet was created in 1893 by U.S. Naval Academy player Joseph Reeve. After being kicked in the head too many times, he put together a moleskin hat with earflaps to prevent further injury. His invention was later used by paratroopers during World War I. THAT'S USING YOUR NOGGIN'

5. There are quite a few teams sporting throwback uniforms this season, most are reverting back to the colors/uniforms when their team was winning. Then there’s Oregon. The Ducks most famous alumni is Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike, who makes sure his team is outfitted. They have hundreds of uniform combinations. THE FIELD IS THE RUNWAY

1. International soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his cover model looks, supreme soccer skills and the big payday those bring in. While he’s not afraid to write a significant check, he’s also been known to roll up his sleeves, literally, as a frequent blood donor. The father of four has made a huge impact on his young fans all over the world. In one instance, he invited a Syrian orphan, who lost both his parents in the war, to a game and spent time with him. He has also paid for numerous children’s lifesaving medical treatments. His signature move is auctioning off coveted trophies he’s been awarded with the proceeds going to charity. INTERNATIONAL MAN OF GOOD

2. John Cena’s heart is bigger than his biceps. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler’s mantra is “Never Give Up” and that’s what he’s told the countless Make-A-Wish kids he’s met with. There are so many moments to make you smile like the time he had a tea party with one Make-A-Wish visitor, while decked out in his full wrestling regalia. Because of the orchestrated nature of his sport, he’s even gone as far as to weave certain moves requested by the kids into his “performance” during a matchup. TINY UNIFORM, BIG HEART

3. Love him or hate him, LeBron James (NBA -National Basketball Association) has left the community better than he found it. His big project is the I Promise School in Akron, OH. The school serves 204 at-risk third and fourth graders and even though it’s only been open one year, they’re seeing positive results. The year-round school has seen growth among the 90% of students – who started the school year at least one year behind grade level – met or exceeded their expected growth in math and reading. CHANGING THE FUTURE

4. Newly engaged couple P.K. Subban (New Jersey Devils, NHL – National Hockey League) and Lindsey Vonn (former U.S. Olympic skier) have charity work in common. Both are a force for good on their own but together they just might change the world. She hosts an annual Strong Girls Camp, where she works to increase confidence in young girls.

Subban has left a mark for good in every community he’s touched. He gave $10 million to the Montreal Children's Hospital but his most impactful work might be his Blueline Buddies program. He provided tickets to each Nashville Predators game (his former team), one for an officer and one for a young person and their guests. He did this in hopes of creating unity between law enforcement and the community. We’ll see what he has in store for New Jersey when the season starts next month. POWER COUPLE

5. No act goes unnoticed and Virginia’s head men’s basketball coach made a selfless choice that will benefit so many others. After winning the first ever national championship for the school, coach Tony Bennett recently turned down a raise. In an unprecedented move, he asked that the money be given to his assistant coaches and the school. He also pledged $500,000 toward a career development program for current and former UVA basketball players. GOOD GUY

1. Making it to the big leagues is a big deal and nearly impossible. Only 3-5% of athletes, in any sport, will make it to the collegiate level, let alone the pros. Some players are recruited as young as junior high. SO YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE?

2. Prospective student athletes have the opportunity to have five “paid” official recruiting visits to schools. This means all expenses related to the prospect’s visit are paid for by the school. These are also the trips you hear about that may or may not involve parties and other tactics to get recruits excited about the schools. But they, nor their families, cannot receive gifts or payments from any school. WILD AND FREE

3. Coaches go to lengths to get their top prospects to commit with school visits and extravagant home visits. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has climbed a tree, went to school with top prospects and had a sleepover complete with some Netflix. One coach wrestled a prospect and another serenaded a recruit or two (and it worked). WHATEVER YOU’RE INTO

4. Head coaches don’t have to only win over the athlete, but their families. One coach went as far as writing a recruiting letter to a prospect’s cat.  And sometimes things don’t always go as planned, like when one mom ran off with the letter of intent and no one could find her. (His dad later signed the paperwork. That led to a court battle). WHEN YOUR MAMA IS THE DRAMA

5. While you might think that a college coach’s job is to call plays and win the big game, 50% of their time is spent recruiting. You might remember a story about Arizona State University’s football coach Herm Edwards, who spent his career in the NFL. He had no idea about having to recruit AND coach. WELCOME TO THE WORLD

2. While everyone expects the defending Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots, to do well this season, it’s the Cleveland Browns who are raising eyebrows. The team that went winless two seasons ago has set the bar high this season and could be one to beat, thanks to second year quarterback Baker Mayfield. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

3. After some controversy around her Sunday Night Football song, Carrie Underwood has teamed up with Joan Jett to sing the show’s opener. For the first time in 14 years, the video for the opening song was shot inside an NFL stadium – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons. P!nk and Faith Hill sang previous versions of the theme song. LADIES OF THE EVENING

4. While you might think the most important people on the field are the guys in the helmets, it’s a little more black and white than that. With the team’s futures in their hands, the referees, and their game changing decision making minds, are only part-time employees. As part of a labor dispute between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association, all refs will be considered part-time until further notice. After some notable controversial calls last season, we’ll see if this status affects the game. PLACE YOUR BETS

5. Did you know the NFL used to be 501 (c)(6) non-profit? They voluntary gave up their tax-exempt status, which means they no longer have to disclose commissioner Roger Goodell’s salary, which has been upward of $31 million. MAKING BANK

The “sport” of fantasy football was originally developed in 1962 but modern fantasy football started in 1999 when Yahoo! offered an online league. Now players can create teams using ESPN or other sports apps as well as make some dough with online betting sites like DraftKing and FanDuel, although they are still illegal in a few states. BETTING IT ALL

2. It’s a male dominated sport, with men making up over 80% of the 60 million participants. But don’t look now because women are whipping up teams of their own. There are whole leagues and even businesses dedicated to helping the female football fan join in on the fun. YOU GOT THIS

3. Fantasy football is usually fun but some leagues aren’t for the faint of heart. They take it very seriously and there’s a punishment for coming in last. The penalties include piercings, buying drinks for the entire next football season, doing standup at a local open mic night or waxing of the nether regions (by a professional, of course, because what are we animals)? THAT’S GOING TO LEAVE A MARK

4. Picking a team name is the best part but remember no one is intimidated by the “Glitter Gridiron” team. Luckily for you, there are massive lists of names out there for inspiration. Some of our favorites? Sacks and the City, Game of Throws, Teddy Throwsevelt and Hot Chubb Time Machine (referencing Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns). CLEVER EH?

5. Drafts, trades and researching game day opponents are all part of the game, hence why U.S. employers suffer a $17 billion (yes with a 'b') loss in productivity due to fantasy football. 1. Believe it or not, college football has been around for 150 years. It all started in front of 100 fans back in 1869 with a battle between Rutgers and New Jersey (later would become Princeton). In the 150th year, the Clemson Tigers are the defending champions and regularly play in from of home crowds of 100,000+. Their head coach Dabo Swinney is coaching in his first year under his new record-breaking 10-year, $93 million contract. MY HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED

2. The ongoing debate in college sports is whether or not athletes should be paid. No matter what side of the argument you’re on, it allows for the universities to pay top notch coach’s salaries and build state of the art facilities to attract top talent. Case in point, LSU overhauled their locker room this year and each player gets a sleeping pod. NAPS ARE GOOD

3. While you might want to rake a head coaches’ salary, there’s no fun in that. In fact, Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban said he has no time to party and has never been to a tailgate. Don’t be boring like Nick and go to a tailgate at one of the best schools for tailgating. BREAK OUT THE BODY PAINT AND BEER PONG

4. Attendance at college football games has been on a decline. In fact, last season it was at its lowest mark in 22 years. Part of the problem is that live games are too expensive and fans can have a great experience from the comfort of their own home or a bar. (TV ratings are still strong). One lure to get butts in seats at games and maybe make a little extra cash? Alcohol.
