Olympics
When you’ve had it up to here. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) is laying the smackdown on U.S.A. Gymnastics (USAG). They gave the entire USAG board six days to resign or the federation will be decertified. The USOC stated that “Our position comes from a clear sense that the USAG culture needs fundamental rebuilding.” This comes on the heels of the sentencing of former USAG/Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar to 40-175 years for multiple sex crimes.
NFL (National Football League)
When you get a seat at the big kids' table. The best in the NFL will play this Sunday in the Pro Bowl (the NFL’s All-Star Game). While some players choose to opt out of playing in the game after a long season to avoid injury and players from the two Super Bowl teams (Patriots and Eagles) are ineligible to play, it's still a good game because there’s cash on the line. The players on the winning team take home a $64,000 check and the losers $32,000.
Overtime
Last night CBS hosted the Most Valuable Performer show, a talent show featuring NFL players. The winner was Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker who sang opera. He brought down the house with his rendition of Ave Maria, winning $50,000 for the charity of his choice, the Baltimore School For Arts. Unlike most of us, he could actually quit his day job. WATCH
Sideline stat
A cool $1 million is on the line on Sunday. The NHL (National Hockey League) All-Star game isn’t one game but a three-on-three player tournament with the winning team splitting a $1 million prize.
Coaches’ Corner
Yesterday, Vince McMahon (yes that McMahon from WWE – Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment) announced he’s bringing back the XFL (Xtreme Football League). The XFL was around for one season in 2001 and for all intents and purposes, it was a joke. The league will be relaunched in 2020 and McMahon stressed that no one will be allowed to play if they have a criminal record, even a DUI - a switch from how the XFL was run before. As expected, Twitter had an absolute field day suggesting potential team names. If you’d like to know why this matters to you, let us explain.

The Five Coldest Games In Sports
1. The beauty of the NBA (National Basketball Association) is that their games are fairly quick (as it relates to the sports world) and they’re inside, with the exception of four games that were played outside. The coldest game on record was between the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns outdoors in Palm Springs, CA. Temps dipped into the 60s and the wind toyed with the player’s shots.
2. MLB (Major League Baseball) players are called the boys of summer but not on April 23, 2013. The first game in a doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies in Colorado started off at 23 degrees. Luckily it warmed up to just below freezing for the second game. Inevitably, somebody froze their you know what off.
3. We all love college football bowl game season in December, except for the coldest bowl game on record. Picture this. The Bluegrass Bowl in Louisville, KY in 1958. The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Florida State Seminoles take the field and your hot chocolate? Well, it’s frozen because it’s 12 degrees. That 60 degree basketball game suddenly looks like a beach vacation.
4. You expect to be cold at an NHL (National Hockey League) game since it’s played on ice after all. But what happens when it’s outdoors in the dead of winter? Ask the 56,000 fans that came out to the 2003 Heritage Classic to watch the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers battle it out in – 4 degree weather. A ride on the Zamboni is the only thing that would make that situation better.
5. We saved the best for last. The infamous NFL (National Football League) ”Ice Bowl” between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys proved to be the most brutal on the list. The New Year’s Eve game of 1967 in Lambeau Field (home of the Packers) saw actual temps around -13 degrees and with the wind chill, -48 degrees. No thank you.

- Take that to the bank. The players on the AFC (American Football Conference) team are $61,000 richer after besting the NFC (National Football Conference) in surprisingly competitive Pro Bowl Game last night in Orlando, FL.
- Let's get it started. Today kicks off Super Bowl week with “Opening Night,” formerly named “Media Day.” This year event will be held during a primetime TV slot and 12,000 fans will be in attendance to watch the media interview members of the Super Bowl teams. The Opening Night interviews are known to include wacky antics and questions.
- We love a good deal. Apparently Falcons and Patriots fans just paid their credit card bills from the holidays because Super Bowl ticket prices have dropped. The demand is so low that it’ll cost you around $2,000 to get into the stadium. (Experts predict the ticket prices will drop even further).
NHL (National Hockey League)
- All-star victory. The Metropolitan Division Team beat the Pacific Division Team to win the $1 million prize in the All-Star Game tournament. The winning team was coached by hockey great Wayne Gretzky after the original coach called in sick.
Tennis
- Atta boy! In his first major tournament since returning from injury, Roger Federer, 35, defeated Rafael Nadal to claim the Australian Open title and his 18th major title.
X Games
- Drive to succeed. Hailey Langland, 16, is barely old enough to drive a car but it was her drive that led her to land a trick that had never been accomplished before by a woman to take home a gold medal in the big air snowboarding competition. No doubt you’ll see Langland again when this event debuts in the Olympics next year.
Overtime
- Girl group Fifth Harmony was set to perform the National Anthem before the NHL All-Star Game but they cancelled last minute due to illness. Courtney Daniels saved the day. Daniels is a member of the Los Angeles Kings Ice Crew and she performed the anthem with only 13 minutes notice.
Sideline stat
- Serena Williams beat her older sister Venus to win a record breaking 23rd major title. To commemorate her win Williams received a custom pair of Jordan shoes from the best athlete to wear #23, the namesake and basketball legend Michael Jordan himself.

- What is a grand slam in tennis? Grand slam is a term used in baseball and in tennis, but they have two completely different meanings. There are four major tournaments in tennis (Wimbledon, Australian Open, U.S. Open and French Open). If you win all of those tournaments you’ve won a grand slam.
