When you instantly become best friends. South Korea stunned the world by beating defending champion Germany and eliminating them from the tournament. The German loss meant Mexico qualified for the next stage of games. The Mexico fans were so grateful to South Korea that one business sent a pallet of Mexican beer (no really) to the South Korean embassy in Washington, D.C. They also celebrated the victory in the streets by drinking tequila with the Korean consul general to Mexico. ¡SALUD!

Could it be the best basketball movie since “Space Jam?” If you’re tired of the heat and want a laugh, the basketball movie “Uncle Drew” comes out this weekend. Uncle Drew started with a character in a Pepsi commercial starring Boston Celtics (NBA – National Basketball Association) superstar Kyrie Irving. Now it hits the big screen with Irving as the star, along with some help from basketball hall of famers Lisa Leslie and Shaq, to name a few. (Don’t worry this is nothing like Shaq’s starring role in the 90s film Kazaam). RAVE REVIEWS

The World Cup started with 32 teams and now it's down to 16 teams as we enter the “knockout stage” tomorrow. Not to be confused with a Mike Tyson punch, the knockout stage means games cannot end in a tie and the losing team goes home. And yes, there may be dramatic shootouts to determine the winner. Yesterday Senegal was the first team in World Cup history to be eliminated from the tournament by fair points play. They had the exact same record and goal differential as Japan, so the tie breaker was the fact that they had more penalties (red and yellow cards), therefore they had to pack their bags. When you’re so good that details aren’t important. For the first pick in the NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns selected Deandre Ayton from the University of Arizona. Ayton had a big few days, first joining Jimmy Fallon and fellow draft prospects in a 90s themed skit. Not to be outdone, he was another athlete to fall victim to not reading a sponsored social media post before tweeting it. TWEET FAIL
When you have a fashion moment you regret. The newest members of the NBA attempted to emulate fashionable veterans LeBron James and Russell Westbrook at their big debut. Not only did University of Oklahoma’s Trae Young, who was the fifth player drafted, show up in a maroon suit…with shorts (maybe he couldn’t find pants that were long enough)? but the night’s fashion included jackets lined with logos, “Black Panther” inspired Gucci and a grandma inspired suit coat. TV personality and chef, Ayesha Curry, wife of Golden State Warriors (NBA) star Steph Curry, is opening a new restaurant in Houston much to the dismay of some Houstonians. Still bitter that the Warriors knocked their Houston Rockets out of the playoffs, fans took to Yelp to rip apart the restaurant before it even opened, posting over 550 reviews. SPOUSAL SUPPORT

An ESPN reporter found a way to get creative with the way he revealed who teams would be selecting, using phrases on Twitter like the teams have “zoned in on,” “grown comfortable with,” or “focused in on” a certain player. When you pledge allegiance to the flag. Despite being one of the top teams in the World Cup, Spain fired their head coach days before the tournament began in Russia. They play soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and his talented Portuguese team today. Spanish fans might be a little conflicted because Ronaldo hails from Portugal but plays professionally in Spain for Real Madrid. Minor League baseball teams are known for their zany publicity stunts and these two are no exception. After a fan vote, a Staten Island team is changing their name to the Staten Island Pizza Rats for a few games this season, as an ode to a hungry subway rat. Not to be outdone, the St. Paul Saints will become the "Raccoons" for one game in honor of the heroic raccoon that scaled a St. Paul office building and captivated a nation earlier this week. Who said diamonds were only a girl’s best friend? The Super Bowl winning Philadelphia Eagles (NFL – National Football League) received their championship rings and my how they sparkle with their 219 diamonds. Amongst the many carefully considered features, the ring has a dog mask to signify the team’s role as the ultimate underdogs in the postseason and for the first time ever, they’re inscribed with the player’s own signature. It was a rough first day at golf’s U.S. Open Tournament. Not only was the traffic on Long Island horrendous, taking some players three hours to get to the course, but the actual golf was pretty tragic too. Tiger Woods made a veteran move, staying on his $20 million yacht near the course but that still didn’t help his game. Known for being a challenging course, Shinnecock Hills sent the players home yesterday with the highest average scores in 25 years. TRAFFIC STINKS
What to watch
All eyes will be on Russia and Omaha, Nebraska this weekend. (We never thought we’d say that in the same sentence). The College Baseball World Series starts tomorrow and features eight college teams ranging from the defending champion Florida Gators to first-timers like the Washington Huskies.
