(Podcast length - 4:43 mins)

On Sunday, February 12, nearly half the country will be tuned into Super Bowl 57 to watch football, rate the commercials, dance to the halftime show and enjoy all the great foods that are devoured on Super Bowl Sunday.

Talk sports confidently leading up to the battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs with this week’s “super” podcast.

Transcript

1. Neither Rihanna nor anthem singer Chris Stapleton will receive an appearance fee for their performance, but the NFL is undoubtedly getting paid for it. The halftime show is no longer sponsored by Pepsi but by Apple Music at the cost of $50M a year. In 1996, Oscar Mayer became the official sponsor of the halftime show, making it one of the earliest official sponsors, if not the first. (So you can time your snack run, with the game kicking off around 6:30 pm ET, halftime will likely be around 8 pm ET). MUSIC TO OUR EARS

2. After Thanksgiving, the Super Bowl is America's second-highest calorie intake day. The average person will consume 11,000 calories - more than four and a half times the recommended daily calorie intake. America’s favorite dish? Chicken wings. We consume more than 1.3B chicken wings and wash them down with 325M gallons of beer. (Coors Light is the most popular, followed by Miller Lite and Bud Light). FEEL THE (HEART)BURN

3. Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be the first Black quarterbacks to start in the Super Bowl. Joining them in the history books is Eagles assistant coach Autumn Lockwood who will be the first Black woman to coach in a Super Bowl. Another first? Brothers playing in the Super Bowl - Jason and Travis Kelce. Andy Reid, the current head coach of the Chiefs, drafted both brothers. Reid drafted Jason when he was the head coach of the Eagles and drafted Travis to the Chiefs. KEEP IT COMING

4. Super Bowl ads weren’t always a thing. Still, in 1973, Joe Namath and Farrah Fawcett’s “Cream Your Face” spot for Noxzema helped establish the game “as an event for advertisers,” according to Smithsonian Magazine. This year a 30-second Super Bowl ad will cost you between $6M - $7M, and expect to see a Serena Williams “Caddyshack” commercial along with one featuring “six degrees from Kevin Bacon.” Don't expect to see a lot of cryptocurrency commercials, which dominated the space last year. BETTER THAN THE GAME?

5. NFL Players aren’t paid their salaries beyond the regular season but receive compensation for postseason play. Players on the winning team will make $157,000, while each player on the losing team will earn a consolation check of $82,000. In many cases, it’s less than the players’ regular season game-day paycheck. (NOT) ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS

Bonus: State Farm Stadium is the home of the Arizona Cardinals and the Super Bowl. The Cardinals only won one game at their home stadium this season, which includes losses to the Chiefs and Eagles. That means the winner of the Super Bowl will have won more games in State Farm Stadium this season than the Cardinals.
