Five Things You Need To Know About The Heisman Trophy

1. The finalists for the award are:

• Baker Mayfield, senior quarterback from Oklahoma, who is hoping to become the first walk on player to win it.

• Lamar Jackson, junior quarterback from University of Louisville, who won last year. (Only one other player has won twice).

• Bryce Love, junior running back from Stanford, who ranks at the top of the nation despite an ankle injury this season.

FYI – Mayfield is the favorite to win.

2. As if they didn’t work out hard enough to get to the Heisman ceremony, the winner will have to hoist the bronze trophy weighing 45 pounds. They've carried the weight of their team, so this should be no problem.

3. The winner is chosen by over 870 media members, in addition to a vote from every former Heisman winner, 58 currently. There is one vote from the fans for a total of 929 votes. Wonder if Lamar Jackson voted for himself?

4. All three of this year’s Heisman Trophy finalists play for teams whose primary uniform color is red. Maybe the committee was in the holiday spirit?

5. Old guys rule, except when it comes to the Heisman. A senior hasn't won the award since 2006.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About College Mascots

1. Replacing its Indian mascot in the 2000s, the unofficial mascot for Dartmouth is “Keggy.” The barrel of booze may be a fan favorite but sadly the school isn’t very good at sports so the rest of the world doesn’t get to join in on the fun.  

2. Albert and Alberta are the gator mascots for the University of Florida. This year the team took the gator love a little too far, creating dreadful “swamp green” alligator skin patterned jerseys. Alligators everywhere were embarrassed by this new look.  

3. Last week Ole Miss decided that their bear mascot wasn’t cutting it and adopted the landshark as their mascot. Maybe they were hoping for a sponsorship from Landshark beer? (In case you’re wondering a landshark is defined as “a swindler of sailors on shore.”)

4. Stanford University’s team name is “The Cardinal” (after the color red). The school does not have an official mascot. A pine tree has become the de facto mascot but it is technically part of the band. We’re sure you’ve seen the jubilant tree on the sidelines and wondered why someone brought a giant car freshener tree to the game. Now you know.

5. Wichita State University is known as the shockers. (Yes, you read that correctly). The nickname was originally created because many of the players worked in the off-season harvesting (aka shocking) wheat in the fields. You learn something new every day.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match

• Step on the scale. The big fight is live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas tomorrow night. Today is important because fighters have to make the 154-pound weigh in. If they weight more than the determined fight weight, there will be financial penalties. Don’t get any ideas Jenny Craig.
• Show me the money. It seems like all the talk around this fight involves dollar signs. From Mayweather’s nickname “Money,” to $400 million payouts to 50 million TV viewers. We’re going to throw one more number out there. A $1 million bet was placed yesterday in Vegas on Mayweather. (Mayweather is the favorite to win).

• After much anticipation, MLB (Major League Baseball) Players Weekend is here. As part of the weekend, players will wear jerseys featuring their nickname on the back, instead of their last name. The New York Yankees have never had names on the back of their jerseys, but they will feature the nicknames as well. Be prepared to cheer for Easy J, Squeaky and Ninja.

• Always the marketing machine, Mayweather is charging sponsors $3.5 million to put their logo on his waistband and $1 million for his victory robe. And you thought the million dollar Victoria's Secret bra was expensive...

• The big kickoff to college football is next weekend but there are a few teams playing this weekend, including the Stanford Cardinal (#14) and Rice Owls. The two teams are expanding American football's global market by playing in Sydney, Australia tomorrow. Crikey!
